Welcome back to school!

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! It has been lovely to meet and greet new and returning students and families to Pioneer over the past couple of weeks. Now that we are settled into our routines, it is time for our first newsletter of the year. In an effort to keep you well informed of important dates and events, we have included a list on the second page of your child's agenda. Additionally, we will continue to use Remind 101 this year as the feedback from parents who signed up last year indicated this is an excellent system. Please log on to our website at http://pioneerschoolwrsd.blogspot.com/ and sign up to receive important messages. On the communication front, we would like to request you ensure the contact information we have for your child(ren) is current and up to date. In the event of an emergent issue, we must be able to contact you quickly. There are many opportunities to volunteer and help out at Pioneer. If you are interested, please send an email to Mrs. Weller at candace.weller@wrsd.ca. Items we'd love to have donated: CTS department: canning jars for gum ball machines students will be building Drama department: old formal wear, unique clothing items and hats PE department: ball gloves SCHOOL COUNCIL Our school council meets on the third Monday of the month at noon in the library. The dates are listed in the front of your child's agenda. We will be electing our executive on October 21. Please mark your calendars and come out and join us. All parents are encouraged to attend. The Division will be hosting an Umbrella School Council meeting on November 21, 2013. Thank you for continuing to support your child(ren)'s education!Sincerely,

Mrs. Bobbie-Jo Douglas Principal

Student Price Cards

Way to go Pioneer! We have currently raised $150 to support our Renaissance program through the sale of SPC cards. Students can purchase their cards at lunch in the gathering area until the end of September. Cards will remain on sale until November 30, but will be available only through the office or Mrs. Chatwood. SPC cards are being sold for $9 and our Renaissance program keeps $3. Do you like FREE STUFF? Every student who purchases an SPC Card will receive a $10 off of $50 coupon for Aeropostale and a coupon for the Body Shop. Any student can purchase an SPC card and it is to be used in conjunction with your Student ID. If you need more information, you can check out the SPC website at www.spccard.ca or Leanne Chatwood at 403 845 2468 ext. 113.

Any student who comes in late must report to our attendance secretary Mrs. Walker located in the library, so she can stamp the students agenda. That way the student will not continue to be marked absent. Students must have a note from the doctor, dentist or parent, or a parent phone call, to be excused. Please call our Attendance Answering Machine any hour of the day or night to leave a message excusing your childs absence or late. Call 403-844-4213.

Pioneer would like to extent a big thank you once again to Steve from Alpine Drugs for the yearly donation of Tools for Schools.

STUDENT LOCKERS

All students have been assigned a locker (shared with another student) this year and have been provided with a school combination lock. As such, we are making you aware of the procedures and regulations surrounding student lockers: According to WRPS Administration Procedures 356 (Inspections and Searches of Persons or Property) "School lockers are provided for student use but are not to be considered the student's private property. They remain the property of the Division and should school officials deem it necessary, the lockers can be searched at anytime, without prior notice to student or parent."

Parents, if you have unwanted spools of thread, they would be welcomed in the sewing class. We have double the amount of sewing classes this year and use up a large amount sewing our beginning samples and threading bobbins. Thank you.

Our Free the Children team has met and we were overwhelmed by the amount of students interested in helping others in our community and overseas as well as animals and the environment. Our first fundraising event will be at the end of the month and will be a multicultural bake sale celebrating Alberta Culture Days. We have lots of exciting things in store for this year. If you have questions about this group please contact Mrs. Oakie, Mrs. Wedman or Mme Chana.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES REQUIRED A student, parent/guardian, or custodian is required to present legal proof of a students name, citizenship and birthdate when a child is registered in school. If a student was born in an authority outside of Canada, an official document from that authority will be accepted. If this documentation has not yet been provided to the school, we request you have this in by mid-January. We are required to have a copy of all students birth certificates on file. The approximate cost of obtaining a birth certificate in Canada is $35.75. The parent/ guardian requesting the birth certificate must have one piece of identification (their own birth certificate, drivers license or passport). Once ordered, it will take approximately two weeks to arrive.
