1. What is physical exercise? Give three examples.

2. What happens in the human body when we exercise?

Learning Goal

Conduct a scientific investigations to answer questions about the physical world.

Success Criteria
Students will be able to: Create testable hypotheses. Use appropriate measurement tools. Collect and record data.

1) Lab Problem/ Questions

What happens to a persons heart rate as that person increases his or her activity level?

2) Information/ Research

Take five minutes to read the information on heart rates.

Write down 5 notes in the box provided on page one. What do you find interesting? What is new for you?

3) Hypothesis

Use the information provided in your research and you background information to write a hypothesis. REMINDER: Observable, Testable, IF, THEN

BECAUSE tells the reader how you know this will occur. It should be based on something you have experienced, or perhaps something you infer. Use your research!

Measuring Heart Rate

4) Data Collection

Find your heart beat by placing two fingers on your wrist or neck. Have your partner watch the clock for ten seconds while you count the number of beats for ten seconds. Calculate your heart rate.

Number

of beats x 6 = heart rate Unit: beats per minute (bpm)

Collect Date

Take your heart rate

1. While sitting Resting heart rate 2. After one minute of walking in place. 3. After one minute of running in place.

Record data in the table on page 3

Collect heart rates from your shoulder partner and three other students sitting on tables next to you.

How to record your heart rate?

Ms. G 108

11 x 6 = 66

15 x 6 = 84

18 x 6 =

How to calculate average heart rate?

Name Alex Mark Anna Tatiana Christine HR (bpm) 82 84 98 112 97

= (82 + 84 + 98 + 112 + 97) 5 = 473 5 = 94.6
