The Human Body Unit Question: How do the different human body systems work to create life?

Essential Questions for Lab: What are the basic purposes of each system? How does each system interact with the other systems in the body? What are the parts of each system? What and where are the different systems in the human body? Standards: S7CS1. Students will explore of the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works. S7CS2. Students will use standard safety practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations. S7CS3. Students will have the computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and following scientific explanations. S7CS4. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating equipment and materials in scientific activities. S7CS6. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. S7CS7. Students will question scientific claims and arguments effectively S7CS9. Students will investigate the features of the process of scientific inquiry. S7L2. Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. e) Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body. Overview of Lab: Using powerpoints and worksheet, students will gather the basic knowledge needed to draw and find information about the human body. Materials: PowerPoint on the different systems Worksheets on the different systems Large sheet of white paper Colored pencils A stencil of a human body Books and internet

Classroom activities: Working in pairs, students will draw the different systems of the human body. After covering 2 systems with PowerPoint and worksheets, the students will work on the drawing using the information that they learned about those systems during class.

Drawing the Human Body Systems - 2010 Chapter 22 to Chapter 25 Find a partner. Group of only 2 students. Pick someone that you can work with. Your best friend is sometimes not the best partner. Each partnership is going to illustrate the all the major human body systems. Each partnership will make a notebook that will contain all human body questions and answers, pre-tests, your plans, notes, and any information that you will use for this project. The notebook is a separate grade (150 POINTS). Mr. Partridge will give you and your partner a large piece of paper to draw an outline of a human body. You will be given only one piece of paper, so make light marks until you are sure of your design. Please put your and your partners name on the paper as soon as you receive the paper. You can use the class stencil, or any other type of stencil. Make two outlines on each side of the paper. You will draw half of the systems on front side and the other half on the back side. Make a detail plan before you and your partner start drawing. Show your plan to Mr. Partridge before starting and add it to your notebook. Do not forget that the information section about the systems earn the most points for the project. Look at the examples on the wall from last years students for ideas or come up with new ideas. Two thirds of the project must be illustrations that are hand drawn or traced. You can use colored pencils or any other writing instrument that does not bleed though the paper. Most markers and Sharpies will bleed though the paper. You can glue items on your project. Only one third of the project can be cut-out pictures. Use your imagination. Do not print pictures from the internet from the school computers; you can cut-out pictures from newspapers or magazines, but do not use my National Geographics or any other magazines in my room. You only have to draw a small portion of each system. An example would be showing a joint and two bones in the arm for the skeletal system.

For each system except senses that you illustrate, you must give the following information: o Label all organs in each system. o How does each system work in details? This includes the functions and jobs on each system? o With each system that you add to your project, tell about the interactions with two other systems in the body. An example would be the cardiovascular system works with the respiratory system to attach oxygen to the red blood cells that moves the oxygen to all cells of the body. Please do not use the same interactions every time or do not just switch them. There are many interactions in the human body. o There must be 5 or more general facts or other important information about each system. o 2 or 3 odd or weird facts about each system. An example with be your blood vessels would stretch around the world two times if they were put end to end Senses describe how each different sense physically works and illustrate and label the parts of each sense. All of the information and answers to the questions must be hand written in your own words. Do not bring in typed information and glue it to the project. Illustrate each of the following system. o o o o o o o o o o o o Integumentary Muscular Skeletal Cardiovascular Nervous Senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing) Lymphatic Digestive Endocrine Respiratory Urinary Information about the immune system

Answer, in detail, the following questions about the human body. Put your answers in your notebook. 1. What are the differences in arteries and veins? 2. What are capillaries? 3. What is the relationship between the heart and lungs and why is it important to the body? 4. What are the components of blood? 5. How do the kidneys work? 6. Explain the role of lymph and lymph nodes in fighting infection? 7. What are the here major parts of the brain and their function? 8. How do humans make noises and talk? 9. What are the three types of muscles and discuss their differences? 10. Explain how the skin regulates body temperature and why this is important. Grade will be based on appearance, neatness, amount of information given about the different systems, and accuracy of the information. Use your pre-test, notes, books or magazines for information and illustration about the systems. You can use any book and magazines in the room, and the internet for more information about the different systems. Chapter 22 starts on page 520. Look on page 524-525 for an overview of the systems. Divide the different responsibilities between you and your partner. Do not forget to put the names of the members of your team on the drawing. To receive a good grade, you and your partner must work hard, plan and work together. This project will take 10 school days with a test on the day after you turn in the project. The projects will be turned in on the final day. NO Late Work This project is worth 250 points. The grade for the project will be given to both partners equally.
