The Paper Boy Many people in Britain take two newspapers.

In the morning, they get one of the national newspapers, and read it at breakfast or on the bus or the train. And in the evening, they get a local paper. The people who deliver these newspapers are usually schoolchildren. Some work in the evening to deliver the local papers; some work in the morning. John has to get up at 4.30 every morning to deliver his papers to different houses in his neighbourhood, even when it is dark and cold outside. He has about eighty customers. John is saving his money to buy a new bicycle. He is saving money for college also. He has already saved 500 and he is very happy. At The Supermarket Mrs Alison Harvey goes to the supermarket two or three times a week. She has to buy food for her husband, her two children and the family cat. Food has become very expensive and Mrs Harvey has to be careful. She has to choose the food carefully in order not to spend too much money. Her husband told her to stay within the family budget. Today she is buying food. She is going to spend more than 50, but she is going to compare prices carefully. Meat is very expensive so Mrs Harvey is going to buy chicken. Her family complains but she tells them: "You have to learn to like chicken." Mr Green Mr Green works in an office near the bank. He has two sons, Paul and Peter. Last Tuesday evening, when Mr Green came back home from work, he got a big surprise: he found his little boy, Peter, sitting on the cat. He had a pen and a piece of paper in his hand. "Why are you sitting on this poor animal?" Mr Green asked his son. "The teacher asked us to write a paragraph on the family pet," answered the boy. The Olympic Games The first Olympics took place in Olympia in 776 B.C. Only Greece participated and there was only one competition: 200 metres race. The Olympics continued like this for 1,168 years. Then they were banned by the Romans in 394 A.D The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Thirteen nations participated in the games, which were organised by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman. He wanted to encourage sports and friendship between all nations. The most important thing in the Olympic Games was not to win, but to participate. But today, it is very important to win because the winners get a lot of money. The symbol of the Olympics is five circles. They represent the five continents. The circles are blue, yellow, black, green and red, the colours usually found on national flags. The circles join together to show the friendship between all the nations. A Day In The Country Mr and Mrs White live in a large city. One spring Sunday they went to the country. They took some food with them. Mrs White put bread, butter, eggs, meat, cheese and drinks in a basket. When they arrived they came out of the car to enjoy calm of the country. Mr and Mrs White stood up near the car, closed their eyes and breathed deeply the pure and healthy air. A few minutes later, Mr White went to the car, brought the basket, put a cloth on the grass and emptied out the basket. Mr and Mrs White sat under a large tree and ate lunch. In the afternoon they walked in the fields and picked flowers. They drove home in the evening and went to a concert with friends.

Monday Through Friday Monday through Friday, the King family is busy; Mr King is an accountant in a large company. He works from 8.30 to 5.00 pm. He drives to work in a car pool with other men. Mrs King is a librarian in a high school. She drives the family car to work. On the way to work, she leaves Kathy with the baby sitter. Bruce rides the school bus to and from school. He gets home at 3.30. At 4.00 pm, Mrs King comes from work with Kathy. The Kings usually eat dinner at 6.30. After dinner, Bruce does his homework and Mrs King washes the dishes. Mr King sometimes brings work home from the office. Ten thirty is bed time in the King home. Mr and Mrs King are usually tired after their busy day. A Visit From Grandfather When grandfather Baily comes to visit his son, Paul and his family, Diane and Gary, his children are delighted. Grandfather is kind and gentle and the children know that he will play games with them. He also takes them on walks through the woods and on trips to the zoo. Grandpa, as the children call him, also buys them chewing-gum, sweets, and ice cream. They love him very much. But one of Diane and Garys favourite times is in the evening when Grandpa reads them stories. He stops at the pictures and carefully explains them.Grandpa reads slowly and dramatically so that the stories come alive. Diane and Gary thing that it is better than television! Australian Aborigines The Karadjere people live in the desert of Western Australia, where the climate is very hot. It rains from January to March, and the rest of the year is dry. They do not live in one place, but travel around on foot. They sleep in shelters made of dry tree branches. Their food is fruits, nuts and kangaroo meat, and they eat fish in the wet season; they also make bread from grass seeds. Water is often difficult to find. The Karadjere like music, dancing and telling stories. They do not wear many clothes. Amazon Indians These people live in the Amazon Basin, in Brazil, where the climate is hot and wet. It rains for nine to ten months of the year. They live in villages.Their houses are made of wood, and the roofs are made of palm leaves. Several families live in each house. They travel by canoe. They eat fruits and vegetables, fish and meat from animals and birds such as monkeys, wild pigs and parrots. They like music, dancing and telling stories. They do not wear many clothes. Canterbury Mrs Brown lives in Canterbury, a little town between London and Dover. A lot of tourists stop there because of the famous cathedral and the charming old town. On her way to the supermarket, a French journalist is interviewing her. I love Canterbury! Its not very far from London and its near the sea. Its a lovely little town, famous for its cathedral, its old houses and its old school, the kings school. And its nice to live here. Shopping is very easy and pleasant because there are no cars in the town centre and there are a lot of shops. Theres a butcher at the corner of Butchery Lane and a baker quite near. We also have a lot of nice tae rooms and restaurants. And there are three cinemas and a theatre, so its interesting to live here. And the people are friendly! Yes, my husband and I are happy in Canterbury. Computers A computer is an automatic electronic machine that can be used as a calculator. Nowdays, computers are used in different fields, in universities, schools, factories, hospitals and other public services and even at home. Computers can write, store and give information very quickly. They can do the work of hundreds of workers in a very short time. Computers can help us in easy and difficult works and make life easier. Today, Algeria is using them in different fields.

The use of greenhouses in Algeria started in 1969. There are different kinds of greenhouses. Farmers prefer metal greenhouses because they last longer than wooden ones. They use greenhouses to protect the seedlings from wind, rain and frost. Greenhouses give better and higher production. Mohamed lives in Boufarik, on a big farm. He has got many greenhouses. Some of them are used for growing tomatoes and peas. Others are used for bananas and melon. This year, Mohamed is very happy because he has got an excellent quality of fruits and vegetebales. Cherchell Cherchell is a nice town in the north of Algeria, 120 Km west of Algiers. It is situated in a mountainous region with a thick forest not far from the centre of the town opposite the Mediterranean. There are about 30,000 inhabitants. Cherchell is one of the oldest towns in Algeria. A long time ago, the Romans came to Algeria and settled for years. They built Cesaree. Today it is called Cherchell. There are still traces of the Romans. The main attraction is visiting the ruins and the museum which contains fabulous collections, prints, old drawings, potteries One of the most important activities of this town is handicraft. You can find local potteries and jewels. People practise basketball everywhere in the town. If you visit Cherchell, you will surely like it. Saturday, March 20th Dear parents, I arrived at Beni Yenni two days ago. Its a nice village. My friend Mouloud and his family are very nice with me. Their house isnt very big but its very nice. Its decorated with many kinds of potteries. They are all made of clay. Some are used for decorating. Some for cooking and others for storing food. Its very nice to drink water out of a jar. The water is very fresh and it has got a good taste. They offered me a beautiful jar and a pair of earrings made of silver. Im sure youll like them. Ill come back home next Thursday. He was the first person who decided to search a direct way to Asia across the Atlantic Ocean. The King of Portugal refused to help him to realise his project but the Spanish government gave him three boats. He used them in his first travel. It was a very important travel because Columbus discovered America in October 12 th 1492. The Prophet Mohamed (prayers and peace on him) was born in Mecca in the year 570. His father died before he was born and his mother died when he was still a child. He lived with his grandfather and later with his uncle. Mohamed (prayers and peace on him) won a good reputation for his justice and honesty on his business missions for Khadijda, a rich woman that he married later. At the age of 40, while he was praying in Hira Cave, he received the revelation through the Angel Gabriel. The Angel Gabriel told him that he was the prophet of Allah. Thirteen years later, the Prophet Mohamed (prayers and peace on him) ordered his companions to leave Mecca and to go to Medina. The Prophet travelled with his best companion, Abu Bakar. Their enemies tried to stop them but they didnt succeed. This long and difficult trip is called the Higira. The Prophet Mohamed (prayers and peace on him) died in 632.

Lamine Dialo Lamone Dialo is from Senegal. He is 14. He is a tall thin boy with short dark hair and dark eyes. His father is a mechanic and his mother is a dressmaker. He has got two brothers and two sisters. Lamine is a puple. On Sunday, he doesnt study. He often plays football or goes to the market with his father. Holidays In Britain In Great Britain, the weather changes all time; people never know what it will be like the next day. The summer is warmer than the winter. But even in summer, the average temperature in only 16C. Sometimes the sun shines, at other times the sky is very cloudy and it often rains. In winter it is sometimes very cold, especially in the north of the country. The temperature may fall bellow 0C and then there is often snow and ice. The best season of the year is probably late spring. At this time of the year the weather is often sunny and quiet warm; the countryside looks very green, and there are wild flowers everywhere. Serengeti National Park Serengeti is the National Park of Tanzania in Africa. It is the home of wild animals including the cheetah. This is a member of the big cat family, like the lion, the tiger and the leopard. The cheetah is the fastest animal on land. It can run 90 kilometres an hour. It is now one of the animals which in danger of extinction. The cheetah has a small head and pointed ears, and long powerful legs. It always hunts and chases its prey on open ground. This is a different way of hunting from the other big cats. They like to stay in and near trees to catch their prey. The cheetah is also different from other cats because it cant draw its claws. Ibn Sina Ibn Sina was born in the year 371of the Higria, near Bukhara, a large city in Uzbekistan. He learnt the Koran before he was ten. At the age of twenty, he was already a well-known doctor. One of his patients was the sultan of Bukhara. He treated him for a serious illness. When he was cured, the grateful sultan allowed Ibn Sina to come to his private library in the palace for reading different books of medicine. Life became difficult in Bukhara during the Turks period. So, he left the town and travelled round the arab world. He wrote The Canon Of Medicine and a lot of other books. He died at the age of 57. Dolphins Dolphins have become a popular attraction at zoos in recent years. They are more interesting than lions and tigers because they are lively and perform tricks like circus animals. Dolphins are the friendliest creatures in the sea. They help swimmers in difficulty and they are very well organized. Some scientists say that dolphins are intelligent creatures. The Bardo Museum The Bardo Museum is a very big and beautiful house surrounded by wonderful gardens. It is a historic monument built up in the 18th century by the Tunisian prince; Sidi Hadj Omar. It became a museum in 1927. There are two sections in the museum: one for prehistory and one cultural anthropology. One of the important attractions is the skeleton of Tin Hinan, the first queen of the Touareg Kingdom. It is exhibited with her treasure. The Bardo Museum is specialised in prehistory.

Tunisia Tunisia is situated in the north of Africa. It is 155,830 Km. It is the smallest country in North Africa. It is bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the south-east. The Mediterranean Sea is on the north and the north east. The Northern part of the country contains a very fertile soil where they grow cereals and olives. The southern part is mainly a desert region. It contains very beautiful oases where dates are produced. The two parts are separated by the Atlas Mountains. The population of this Arab and Islamic country is 9,562,000 inhabitants. The Tassili Many tourists visit Algeria every year. They come from different part of the world. Most of them prefer to visit the Sahara. Some of them are attracted by the Tassili. This vast and arid region is situated in the South-east of the Algeria Sahara. It is bordered by Libya, Niger and Mali. The people who have already visited this region, say that it is one of the most fascinating places. They are surprised by the carvings, the drawings and the paintings on walls in caves. They represent the early peoples civilisation. Tom Brown My name is Tom Brown. I am 70. I am an old man. When I was young, I could do many things. I could run, I could jump, I could practise gym and play football. Now, I cant do all that because I am very old. The Postman Neil Moor has been a postman for 20 years. He has carried mail in heat and cold, in rain and in snow. He has delivered thousands of letters to homes in his mail route. He lives in a small town and knows every family on his route. At Christmastime, many families give him presents. They appreciate his dedication and good service. Dear Mum, Hello! How are you? I wasnt very well when I arrived in England on Sunday. But the following day I felt better. I took a bus to London with my German friend, Eric, and we visited the British Museum. We spent about 6 hours, but we didnt have time to visit all the galleries. They have got an amazing collection of Canadian, Indian, Egyptian things. We will probably go back next week. The day after we went to Buckingham Palace. This is where the Queen lives when she is in London. We watched the ceremony of changing of the Guard at 11.30. It was great! Then, we went to the famous London zoo. Now we are having sandwiches in Hide Park. Then we are going to do some shopping in Oxford Street. Opposite the door there are two large bay windows, and under the one on the left theres a large table with a chair. Along the the wall opposite the fire place theres a small single bed with a very nice sort of Indian bedspread, red and brown. In the middle of room there two armchairs, which Ive put in front of the fire. But best of all, theres a piano! It doesnt work, but it impresses all my friends. Thats just by the door. Oh, and theres a lovely small table where I put my stuff when I come in, just near the door. Well, Ill tell you later about the city, the university and all my new friends. Dear Matthew, Last week Nicolas, my penfrind, came to my parents home. I took him round Portsmouth and we had a great time. On Sunday the weather was fine, so we walked around the seaside and we played tennis. Then we went to the fun-fair. I spent all my money there but it was so funny! On Tuesday it rained so much that we decided to visit the museum. We didnt see everything because Nicolas wanted to go to the cinema. There was a good detective film on. On the last afternoon we went to the South Parade Pier. We played bingo and electronic games. Im sure Nicolas enjoyed himself, he was so pleased! How about you? What did you do last week? Mitton St 4th of October Dear Grandma, How are you? Its four oclock and Im at home because I havent got any lesson. There was a school excursion today. I was at the London Transport Museum from 10 to 2.30. It was very nice. There are a lot of old horse buses. I suppose there were horse buses when you were a little girl. Now I know everything about the London underground. It is more than 100 years old and works with electricity of course, but the first underground trains were steam trains. I suppose it was very dirty in the old days! This week Ive got to write a composition about transport in London in 1920. Can you help me? I know youve got some old photos and postcards. Hello! My name is Jill Bennet, and I live in Dublin. I work as a bus driver for the local bus company. Im 32 and Im the eldest of four. My brothers and sister are called Stella ( shes the youngest ), Luke and Frank. Strangely, theyre all married except me. Stellas husband is called Brian, and they havent got any children. Stella married very young: shes only 22 now. Lukes next hes 24 and hes just started working as a junior doctor in a hospital in London. His wifes name is Ruth and shes a doctor, too. Theyve already got a little baby, Douglas, who was born last year. Finally theres Frank whos 31, and whos married to Dorothy. Theyve got two children, Ken, whos six and Millie, whos four. We all live in different parts. I was born in Manchester in the north west of England, and thats where my Mum still lives. She lives on her own - our Dad died in 1982. Stella lives quite close, in Bolton, but Frank lives in the USA. Hes got a job with an American company.

My names Zulu. I was born in a brick house in Soweto, near Johannesburg in South Africa. We were poor. My father was a factory worker and my mother was a maid. They worked very hard from the morning to the evening, but they didnt get much money, and they were always tired. My father died when I was six. So my mother worked in two houses. When I was a small child I was always hungry and nearly always unhappy because life was very hard. White people were terrible to us.

The winter holidays will start on December 20th. Nadias cousin, Anissa , invited her to spend one week with her in Cherchell . Nadia is very happy because Cherchell is very nice and because she likes her cousin very much. Nadia is going to go on Saturday. She is going to go by bus. Nadia and Anissa are going to do many interesting things .They are going to visit the Roman ruins , the museum and take photos there . They are going to play video games and chess. Anissas birthday is on December 26th so they are going to organize a party and invite some friends. Nadia is going to go back home on Saturday, December 28th .

The 20th century is a century of change. There are many new occupations and professions now, as a result of many inventions. Since the invention of television, there have been TV announcers, TV engineers and TV repairman. The airplane is another invention that is changing our lives. Pilots, stewards, air traffic engineers, etc represent many new professions and occupations. The invention of the electronic computer is producing new professions including computer engineers and computer programmers The 20th century is clearly a century of change: There is always something new.

A long time ago, the Chinese discovered paper. They made it from leaves of trees. Before the year 1400, the Egyptians used papyrus to write. Papyrus is a kind of paper made of some plants. The plants grow in Egypt. Later, writers and artists started to use paper. Now, a lot of countries produce paper. They make it from wood of trees. Today, the best quality of paper is made in Finland. The Ruins Of Timgad The ruins of Timgad are located 30 kms from Batna. Timgad is one of the oldest vestiges of the Roman colonisation. It was a military capital of all the Roman provinces in North Africa and the biggest administrative centre. It is the oldest Roman city in Algeria, built around the year 100 A.D. Inside the ruins, we find the Roman Municipal Library. We can also see many statues of many important senators. There are also several ruins such as marbles, many pieces of pottery and ceramics dating from the Roman occupation. The forum of Timgad shows plenty of inscriptions with names of the members of the municipal committee of the ancient city, names of high officials of the Roman Empire. Mr Watson is a very good doctor. He never goes to work late. He always gets up early, has breakfast and goes to work by car. Mrs Watson is a teacher of French. She is always busy. She doesn't work in the afternoon; she always starts work at 8.00 in the morning. She has got two children: Christina and Christopher. There are thousands of languages all over the world. India has the largest number. English is the most used language on Earth, but Mandarin Chinese is spoken by about 70% of the Chinese population. The oldest written language is Egyptian. English is the language of business and technology. However, it is not easy to learn it. It has the largest vocabulary. English has borrowed many words from other languages such as French and Arabic.

Mexico One of my favorite places for a vacation is Mexico. I really like the weather because it never gets cold there. The people are very nice, too. They never laugh at my bad Spanish. And the food is wonderful! Mexico City is a very interesting place to visit. It has some great museums and lots of fascinating old buildings. And the hotels are not too expensive. But you can stay in other places in Mexico. For examples, you should go to one of the beach resorts- like Acapulco. And you shouldn't miss the Mayan temples near Merida. Jack's Fish Last Tuesday was Tom's birthday. To celebrate this event, he invited his best friends; Peter, Mark and Ted to have some tea and cakes at home in the afternoon, then to have dinner at Jack's Fish; a famous restaurant in London. (1) Jack's Fish is specialized in fish. It is situated at the corner of Haymarket Street, next to Barclays Bank. (2) Many people say that there's no food more delicious than the one you eat at Jack's Fish and that its service is the fastest in London. (3) Grandma knows best When people have a cold, a fever or the flu, they usually go to the doctor for help, or they get some medecine from grugstore. But many people also use home remedies for common illnesses. Here are some simple home remedies. For burns, put the burn under cold water or put a cold handkerchief on it. Its important not to put ice on the burn. For colds, many people rub oil on their chest. Other people drink a mixture of red pepper, hot water, sugar, lemon juice, and milk or vinegar. Apply an ice pack or cold cloth to your head, or splash your face with cold water. Its also a good idea to put your hands into hot water and leave them there for several minutes. For insomnia, drink a large glass of warm milk. Its also a good idea to soak in a warm bath. Two New Restaurants in Town This week I tried two new restaurants - Michelles and Antons. They are both French restaurants downtown. Michelle's is a small place with about twenty tables. The waiters and the waitresses are very friendly, and the service is excellent. I ordered chicken with orange sauce along with rice and a salad. Then I had chocolate cake and coffee. The chicken was delicious, but the cake was too dry. The meal cost about twenty dollars. Antons is a much bigger restaurant, and it was very crowded on that night. I waited twenty minutes for a table. Antons is noisier than Michelle's, and the waiter was very slow with my meal. I ordered soup and a steak with fried potatoes and vegetables. The soup wasn't very hot. The steak was OK, but the vegetables werent very good. For dessert, I had ice-cream. The meal was really expensive - about fortyfive dollars! Now you know why I would go to Michelle's again, but not to Antons. Mrs. Watson is a very old woman. She is small and slim with grey hair and brown eyes. She lives in a nice flat in London. She cannot go out because she is ill. She always asks me to do shopping for her. Mrs. Watson is very kind. She usually gives me sweeties and chocolate. Steve and Jill do their shopping at the supermarket on Saturdays. They go there by car. The supermarket is not very far from their house. It is a big blue building on the right side of the avenue. There is a car park next to the supermarket. Steve and Jill buy some vegetables, fruit and meat there but they prefer buying their lemonade and milk in a small shop near their house. Jill is a good cook. She always prepares delicious dishes and she likes that.

James Cook James Cook was an English explorer. He was born in 1728. He loved adventures. He travelled to discover the Pacific Ocean. He discovered Australia, New Zeleand and New Guinea. He also found Hawaii. He died there in 1779.

There are so many cars on the roads nowadays that driving in big towns is not pleasant at all. Some time ago, a friend who works in a part of the city I do not know very well, invited me. It took me hours to get there and find a place to park. As I was late, I hurried off on foot, thinking that these days it is much easier to walk than to drive. At noon, just as I was leaving my friends office, I suddenly realised that I had no idea where I had parked my car. I walked down street after street, examining each car closely but without any result. Feeling quite tired, I gave up the search and went off for lunch. Some time later, I left the restaurant and walked slowly down the street. I turned the corner, and there was my car, right in front of me but on the window was a little ticket. It was a fine for bad parking. Next time I visit my friend, Ill take a taxi. Yesterday morning at 9.30a.m, two bikers died in a tragic accident on a sharp bend on Airport Road. The bikers were talking to each other while they were overtaking a lorry which was travelling in the direction of Heathrow Airport. Apparently they were having morning exercise in preparation for the Tour de France. Two motorcyclists were coming from Heathrow Airport while looking at a low-flying landing airplane. They were riding very fast, an eyewitness said. The collision between the motorcyclists and the bikers blocked the traffic for more than two hours. Two policemen were investigating the accident when we arrived on the scene.

Abdelhamid Ibn Badis Abdelhamid Ibn Badis was born in Constantine on the 4th December 1889. When he was 13 years old, El Cheikh Mohamed El Madassi taught him Arabic language and helped him to learn the Koran. After that, his father sent him to El Zaytouna University in Tunisia. He stayed there two years; he studied hard until he had the license. When he came back to Algeria, he had good ideas. He used them to develop the society. He loved his country and he loved the mosque too; he made it the center of teaching Arabic and Islamic religion. For this objective, he made a program. He taught young persons in the evening, men the day and women every Friday. Abdelhamid Ibn Badis was a teacher and a writer. He wrote four newspapers: El Souna, El Sirat, El Chihab and El Mountakad. He also wrote poems. Chabou El Djazairi moslim which means Algerians are moslim is very famous. In 1936, he founded Djamiate Oulama El mouslimine and was its first president. El Cheikh El Bachir El Ibrahimi was his assistant. Abdelhamid Ibn Badis was a great and famous personality and he will be our example for ever. Being Fat "You should exercise more and eat less, Karim" his father advices. However, Karim refuses to listen and continues gobbling down the bar of chocolate in his hands. His father sighs. Karim is too fat and lazy. His father does not want him to get any illness. One day, while Karim is jogging during PE, he collapses. His teacher takes him to the doctor and calls his parents. At the clinic, the doctor says that Karim is too fat. His heart is not working well enough. If he continues to gain weight, he may get a heart disorder. Karim is afraid and starts to exercise. Now he has lost four kilograms. Fast Food Many children love eating fast food. This includes food such as burgers, pizzas, hotdogs and fish and chips. Although such food is tasty, it does not provide us with enough vitamins, nutrients and the goodness that our bodies needs. This food is not very healthy as it usually contains a lot of fat. Eating fast food often can result in weight gain. However, you can make a meal at the fast food healthier by choosing a burger which has lots of vegetables in it, by skipping the fries and by having plain water instead of carbonated soft drinks. The Holy Month of Ramadan Ramadan is the ninth month in Islamic calendar. All adults must fast Ramadan. They are not allowed to eat or drink between dawn and sunset. Fasting strengthens a person by increasing his self-control. It also helps a Muslim to remember Allah and his obedience to him. Some are excused from fasting. Some may be too old or too ill. Others are on journey. Women who are expecting or nursing a baby cannot fast. Eid Al-Fitr comes after Ramadan. Muslims all over the world celebrate it. Muslims enjoy themselves with friends and relatives. How to produce leather To produce leather, we need natural animal skins such as: cows, oxen, goats and deers etc. as soon as the skins are delivered to the factory, they are cleaned. Then, they are salted and stored for three days under the sun. After that, they are washed again and put into a machine where they are tanned with chemicals. The leather is then transferred into centrifuge machine where water is eliminated. Next, it is cut dyed before it is dried. Finally, the leather is ready to be transformed in clothes, bags, shoes etc.

People are very lucky today. We have all the facilities in our homes which make doing our everyday chores much easier. Our grandfathers and grandmothers were not so fortunate when they were young. People who grew up in the past experienced many hardships. They did not have a ready supply of water and electricity in their homes. They had to fetch water from wells which were usually far away from their houses. During the dry season, the wells would dry up and they had to walk even further to the streams or rivers to get water. They cooked on wood or charcoal stoves. There were also no cables wires bringing electricity into their homes. They had to light up kerosene lamps or candles to brighten up their homes. Astronauts Has any one of us ever got the slightest idea about what astronauts eat in space? Well. A typical daily meal for American astronauts in space is tomato soup, chicken, mixed vegetables and strawberries. First, the food is frozen on earth and the water is taken out. The astronauts, then, put cold water onto the food from a water gun which is connected to the food pack. The astronauts, as everyone else does, eat the food with a knife, fork and spoon, but they have to be very careful because in zero-gravity bits of food can fly through the air! For snacks they often eat peanuts and dried fruits. They also have a hot-water gun to make coffee and tea, and the astronauts have to drink through a plastic tube. If one day you eat such a special meal, would you enjoy it? Louis Pasteur Louis Pasteur was a French scientist who discovered that bacteria caused diseases. Before his discovery, people suffered from all kinds of illnesses and infections which could actually have been avoided. He found out that by applying heat for a certain period of time, germs in dairy products and other types of food could be destroyed. The process of using heat to kill bacteria in food is now called pasteurization. Now, following Louis Pasteur's discovery, many food items are processed in this way to keep away bacteria and to prevent it from thriving in food products. Unsatisfied Tourists A group of tourists who recently visited Algeria after reading an ad brochure on a web-site complained about the unsatisfactory conditions. They said there was on water in their rooms, bad accommodation, lack of transport The food they had was not as delicious as promised in the ad and the service was terrible. They said if did not have their money back, they would write an official complaint to the authorities. Water Nearly three-quarters of the world is covered by water. The Pacific Ocean has a larger surface area than all the dry land on earth. This water is not good for drinking. It's salty. There are several different sources of drinking water. In some areas, dams prevent rivers from returning rainwater to the sea. Reservoirs are formed to provide drinking water all year around. In other places, rainwater drains through the earth's surface and collects in lakes or rivers underneath. The largest source of fresh water in the world is in Antarctica. People use water for washing (dishes, clothes and themselves) in toilet, in industry. It is used in the making of electricity and irrigation. A large number of accidents happen in the home. The most common accidents are falls, burns, scalds, electrocution suffocation and poisoning. Small children are very active. They put everything in their mouths. They play with sharps things. They put plastic bags in their heads. Mothers have dangers in the kitchen like burns, cuts, from kitchen utensils and open tins.

Bachir Menaceur is a third year student at Mohamed Dib School, in Tipaza. Yesterday, he had a radio interview with Abdelkader, a presenter at the Algerian English service radio. Abdelkader told him to say what he would do if he suddenly became rich. He answered: If I became rich, I would pay a fishing boat for my father, so that he would never work for a boss anymore. He also said that he would travel around the world, pay a visit to Sidney, to see his pen-friend and attend an international rugby match. And if his dreams came true, he would become a naval engineer and would work for the Algerian Navy. But unfortunately, this is just a dream. Bachir is very poor. Perhaps he will become rich. S.O.S animals in danger Many animals in the world are in danger. For many of them the biggest danger is humans. People have always killed animals for their meat and for their skins. Others are killed because they eat crops or attack the farmer's animals. Some animals such as tigers and elephants used to live in great numbers in countries like India. People have hunted them, so there are not many today. However, there are now laws in India which protect them. In south America, many different birds and animals have lost their natural homes in forests because thousands of trees have been cut down or burnt. People then used the land for farming or building roads and towns. Some species are nearly extinct. Only few of them live in some parts of the world. Others live only in zoos or special parks. Zoos are important because they help some animals to live in security. They also permit to care for animals and learn more about them. Miss Green's Flat Miss Green is a schoolteacher. She lives alone in a large house. In the evening she corrects her pupils' papers and watches TV in the sitting room. The sitting room, the kitchen and the dining room are downstairs. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. This is weather forecast for the next twenty four hours in Britain. It will rain tomorrow morning in the South of England. The North will be colder with temperatures around four to five degrees Celsius. The East will coast will be warmer. There will be heavy rain and snow in the late evening in Scotland The cat and the mice Once upon a time there was a cat which terrorized the mice in an old house. They felt threatened, and their lives were in danger at every moment. In order to find a solution to this problem, the mice had a meeting. All of them had wonderful ideas. "If we do this" said the one. "No, no not that" said the other. Then the oldest mouse of all proposed:" Let us put a bell around the neck of the cat, so that when we hear the bell, we will know that the cat is nearing and we will have time to hide." The rest of the mice jumped for joy at this clever idea. At last they would live at peace! But later, one of the mice asked:" Who is going to hang the bell around the neck of the cat? Who Will have so much courage to do this!" When all realized that the idea was very dangerous, all they could do was to hang their heads and keep on thinking. They did not let their imaginations run away with them this time. Moral Solutions to problems should be practical and possible to make.

Yesterday was Saturday. I got up at seven o'clock and had breakfast. I went to work at eight thirty. I'm a doctor, so I sometimes work on Saturday morning. I worked until 12: 30.After work, I had lunch with some friends in a restaurant. Then we went to the cinema. We saw "Gladiator". It's a fantastic film! After that, I went home. I cooked dinner, and then listened to music. At ten o'clock I had a shower and went to

bed. The Sahara The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the West to Egypt and Sudan in the East. In Algeria, it occupies more than 4/5 of the area but has less than 10% of the population. Our desert has one of the lowest rainfalls in the world. This means that very few animals and plants can live there. "The Blue Men" are the natives of the far South. They are mainly a nomadic Berber people called the Touareg. They have their own culture, their customs and a special life style. Their caravans are always in movement. Their evening gatherings around glasses of mint tea are simply marvelous. Lovely starlit nights, heavenly music generally played by women and splendid traditional dances performed by men wearing veils. The Bermuda Triangle At 2 pm on 5 December 1945, five US bombers took off from Fort Lauderlale in the USA for a training flight in perfect weather. Shortly afterwards, the pilots radioed that their flight instruments were all malfunctioning. Two hours after take-off, all contact with the planes was lost. A reconnaissance plane was immediately dispatched to search for the missing planes. Within 20 minutes, radio contact with it had also been lost. No trace of any of the planes was ever found. In all, six planes and 27 men had vanished into the air. The disappearance of the six planes was far from being the first mysterious incident in the area: for years, navigational problems and strange magnetic forces had been reported. The disappearance was not even the greatest disaster within the triangle. The Cyclops, a 19,000-ton US ship was sailing from Barbados to Norfolk, Virginia. In March 1918, when it vanished with its crew of 309 from the surface of he ocean without making a distress call and without the slightest wreckage ever being found. The losses of boats and planes in that area defy explanation. The disasters are the origin of a new phrase in the English language the Bermuda Triangle and this phrase has entered legend. The Bermuda Triangle has been called the Devils' Triangle, the Triangle of Death, the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It has swallowed up 140 ships and planes and more than 1,000 people. Today many airmen and sailors are still afraid of that area of the Atlantic Ocean. Mac Donald's: A HUNDRED BILLION HAMBURGERS Once upon a time, a businessman named Ray Kroc discovered a restaurant owned by two brothers. The restaurant served just four things: hamburgers, French fries, milk shakes and coca cola. But it was clean and inexpensive, and the service was quick. Mr Kroc liked it so much that he paid the brothers so that he could use their idea and their name: Mc Donald's. Beef, big business and fast service were the ingredients when Mr Kroc opened his first Mc Donald's in 1955. Four years later, there were 100 of them. Kroc knew Americans liked success. So he put signs saying how many millions of Mc Donald's hamburgers people had bought. In just four years, the number was one hundred million. Now, there are more than 13,000 Mc Donald's restaurants from Dallas to Paris and from Moscow to Beijing. Anyone who wants to open a Mc Donald's must first work in one for a week. Then, they do a ninemonth training programme, in the restaurants and at 'Mc Donald's University' in Chicago. There they learn the Mc Donald's philosophy: quality control, service, cleanliness and cheap prices. Mc Donald's has strict rules, Hamburgers must be served before they are ten minutes old, and French fries, seven. Mc Donald's has never stopped looking for new methods to attract customers, from drive-in windows to birthday parties. Chicken, fish, salad and, in some places, pizza are now on the menu. Mc Donald's in Holland even sells a vegetarian burger. Their international popularity shows they have found the recipe for success.

Mystery Queen Christie was probably the most successful writer in history. She wrote 78 crime novels, six other novels, 150 short stories, four non-fiction books and 19 plays. That represents two billion books sold: more than William Shakespeare! Christie became a writer by accident. She was bored when her husband was away in the First World War. Agatha was working in a hospital dispensary (which is where she learned all the information about poisons that she used in her books). She decided to write a novel to pass the time. She chose a detective novel because she loved reading them. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was an instant success. Each book had a new ingenious plot. Readers loved the books, particularly because Christie always gave the readers all the information they needed to find the solution. Christie loved travelling. When she became rich she could go all over the world. She used the travels in her writing. Agatha Christie died in 1976, but her stories are still immensely popular. Many have been adapted for film or television In the past, a lot of people died because there were not any treatments for many illnesses. But during the last few years, a lot of medicines and vaccines were discovered. Now, influenza, diabetes and some other ills are easily treated and people die less thanks to the big progress in the field of medicine. But scientists are still working hard to find vaccines for other diseases as AIDS. Some scientists think that to be in good health, people should eat fresh food, practise sport, drink a lot of water and juice, sleep early and get up early Leaving Home Young people leave their parents' homes at different ages in different parts of the world. In the United States, a lot of college students do not live at home. Many choose to go to college in different cities - away from their parents. At college, they live in university housing. After college, most people prefer to live in their own homes. They often live alone, but some people rent apartments with others. These people are roommates. By the age of 22, few young people in the United States live with their parents. Families stay together longer in many Asian countries and cities. In Hong Kong, for example, nearly all university students live with their parents. Rents in the city are very expensive, and few students have the money to pay for their own apartments. Very few young people live alone or become roommates in a shared apartment. Many young people in Hong Kong continue to live with their after they marry. In Bangkok We went to Thailand for our summer vacation last year. It was our first trip to Asia. We loved it. We spent a week in Bangkok and did something different every day. We went to the floating market very early one morning. We didn't buy anything there, we just looked. Another day, we went to Walt Phra Keo, the famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It was really interesting. Then we saw two more temples nearby. We also went on a river trip somewhere outside Bangkok. The best thing about the trip was the food. The next time we have friends over for dinner, I'm going to cook Thai food. In Bangkok Last summer, we spent our vacation in Thailand. We were very excited - it was our first trip there. We spent two days in Bangkok. Of course, we got a river bus to the floating market. We bought some delicious fruit there. The next day we went to a very interesting temple called the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. We didn't have time to visit any other temples. However, we went to two historic cities Ayuthaya and Sukhuthai. Both have really interesting ruins. Everything was great. it's impossible to say what was the best thing about the trip.

Modern Life Modern Life magazine asked two people about their neighborhood. Diana: My neighborhood is very convenient - it's near the shopping center and the bus station. It's also safe. But those are the only good things about living downtown. It's very noisy - the streets are always full of people! The traffic is terrible, and parking is a big problem! I can never park in my own street. I'd like to live in the suburbs. Victor: We live in the suburbs, and it's just too quiet! There aren't many shops, and there are certainly no clubs or theaters. There are a lot of parks, good schools, and very little crime; but nothing really happens here. I would really love to live downtown. Budapest For many centuries, Budapest was two cities, with Buda in the west side of the river Danube and Pest on the east side. Budapest became one city in 1872, and it has been the capital city of Hungary for about eighty years. The population of Budapest is about three million, and the city is a very popular place for tourists. Visitors like to take boat rides along the Danube. Budapest is also known for its exciting nightlife. The best time to visit is the summer since Budapest is very cold in the winter. Los Angeles Los Angeles was founded in 1781. With 3.5 million people, it is now the biggest city in California and the second largest city in the United States. It is famous for its modern freeways, its movie stars, and its smog. When the city is really smoggy, you can't see the nearby mountains. The weather is usually dry and warm. Visitors like to go to the film studios and to drive along Hollywood Boulevard. There are some good beaches near the city, and Los Angeles is also close to Disneyland. Taipei Since the finding of Taipei in the eighteenth century, the city has grown to a population of 2.3 million and has become the cultural, industrial and administrative center of the island of Taiwan. Taipei is an exciting city, but the weather is humid and not always pleasant. It's also a very busy city, and the streets are always full of people. There is an excellent museum that tourist visit. Taipei is a fairly expensive city, but not more expensive than some neighboring cities such as Hong Kong and Tokyo. So more and more tourists go to Taipei to shop. Sleep Most people need seven to eight hours sleep a day. Some people need less than this, and some people need more. According to sleep expert Dr. Robert Schachter, many people have difficulty sleeping, but they do not know why. Most people know it is important not drink coffee or tea before they go to bed both beverages have caffeine. Caffeine keeps people awake. However, not everybody knows that some medicines, such as cold tablets, also have caffeine in them. Stress can cause insomnia, too. Busy people with stressful jobs may not be able to sleep at night. Dr. Schachter suggests: You shouldn't use your bedroom as a TV room or an exercise room. You should use it for sleeping only. It's a good idea to have a regular sleeping schedule. Get up and go to bed at the same time every day. It's also important not to eat before bedtime. Eating may keep you awake. And if all this doesn't work, try counting sheep! Trattoria Romana Trattoria Romana is an excellent Italian restaurant. It has a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, and the service is very good. It's always crowded, so make a reservation early. The menu is not very big. There are only four entrees on the menu, but everything is fresh. The chicken with pasta is wonderful. Dessert is their specialty - rich and delicious! It's a little expensive but very good. You'll spend about $25 pre

person. Dynasty Last Saturday, I was the only customer at Dynasty, a new diner on 57th Street. It's not a good place to go. The waiters are slow and unfriendly. The atmosphere is boring, and so is the menu. It specializes in American food - mostly steak and potatoes; but my steak was raw, and the fries were greasy. It isn't cheap, either. It cost me $22. If you go to Dynasty, you certainly won't need a reservation. My advice, however, is Don't Go Beirut caf Beirut caf is a great Lebanese restaurant. The specialty is meze - lots of different small dishes, some with meat or fish, and others with vegetables. The atmosphere is lively, and the service is very friendly. There's live Lebanese music and dancing on weekends. Beirut Caf is surprisingly inexpensive - about $18 a person, but you need to make a reservation. Antarctica

ANTARCTICA is the most southern continent in the world. It is like nowhere

else on earth. Larger than Europe, and nearly twice the size of Australia. It is an icy plateau with the south Pole at its centre. Antarctica is the coldest and windiest place in the world, even colder and windier than the North Pole. In the summer, the sun shines for twenty-four hours a day, but in the winter it's completely dark for about three months. Very few plants grow there, but there is some wildlife, including whales, seals, and penguins. When Captain James Cooks sailed around the continent in the 1770s, he found no one living there. Today, a few scientists work in Antarctica, but they only spend fairly few periods there. Many scientists in Antarctica are studying the ozone layer. The ozone layer is getting thinner and thinner worldwide. The biggest hole is over Antarctica, where the weather is getting warmer. Scientists think that this cold and lonely place can teach us a lot about the earth and how to keep it safe. www.telephone.com Not so long ago, people only used the telephone to make phone calls. Now, thanks to computers, people use their phones to do much more. They can bank by phone, rent videos by phone, and even shop by phone. It is also possible to send letters and reports by faxing them over telephone lines. People can even use their phone lines to send messages from one computer to, another one by electronic mail, or email. But you don't need to be at home or at the office to use the phone anymore. You can carry a cellular phone in your pocket or keep one in your car. With a cellular phone, anyone who can talk and walk can also phone and walk. You don't have to look for a pay phone to make a call anymore. Now you can take your calls with you everywhere.
