Six bodies found after fire on ship in Japan

Six bodies, suspected to be those of Russian crew members, were found aboard a cargo ship that caught fire on Thursday while anchored in a Japanese port, a coastguard and news reports said. Fire took hold of the 497-tonne Cambodian-registered vessle, which has been in the port of Wakkanai in northern Japan since Tuesday, said an official at the local coastguard office. A total of 23 Russian and Ukrainian crew members were on the ship, which had transported crabs from a Sakhalin port. Six of them - all Russian - had been unaccounted for, the coastguard said. "We have found six bodies in the ship and are now identifying them," the official said, adding that two other crew members were hospitalised for burns but neither was in a life-threatening condition. Local reports confirmed that the six victims were the missing Russian crew members. The fire was put out by early Thursday afternoon, the official added. (AFP)

vehicles and a good lashing system should be used while transporting vehicles. Care should be taken to ensure that lashing does not obstruct a crew access ladder. The most effective method of ensuring the safety of personnel is to keep people and moving vehicles apart by preventing access to the decks during cargo operations. During normal operations this is impracticable but the fewer people that have access to the decks the less likelihood there is of accidents occurring. If access to these decks is necessary only marked and authorised routes on decks and vehicle ramps should be used. Well illuminated, permanently marked and clearly signaged walkways should be provided for all those who require authorised access to the vehicle decks both during cargo operations and when the ship is at sea. In addition, suitable barriers should be in place adjacent to doorways and exits that open directly onto the vehicle decks to prevent any person inadvertently walking straight onto the deck and into the path of a moving vehicle. Other measures such as deck-mounted kerbs that force vehicles to maintain a safe distance from doorways and exits are also recommended. Source: UK P&I Club

"It has been six months without pay, without money and without food in a foreign country. We were abandoned in Bossaso, Puntland, " Nelson Bosire, the Third Engineer of the ship told Xinhua on arrival in Nairobi. The fishing vessel sailed off from Kenya and docked in Kismayu, Southern Somalia after a seven-day expedition. It sailed for another seven days to reach the Mogadishu seaport.
