PALO, Leyte e National Food Authority (NFA) here in the region admitted that su cient supply of government rice is not enough to stabilize the price of staple food in Eastern Visayas, given their minimal share of the total regional reserve.

The food agency said they would ensure that no government rice would be overpriced or diverted and sold as commercial rice. The NFA was not able to influence rice prices because of so many rice stocks in the household. To be able to manipulate the price, we have to get the majority share of stocks, said NFA regional information o cer Mary Agnes Militante. e NFA believed that high stocks in houses could be attributed to the palangoy system where farmers borrow money from lenders and pay an interest of one sack of palay for every P1,000 to page 2

Restore the dignity of the Legislature

he Filipino people pat their backs in rightfully restoring the dignity of the Presidency when they gambled to elect Senator Benigno Simeon S. Aquino III for the highest post of the land. Except for the fact that he bore a name associated with dignity heroism and an unquestionable good public image, being the son of a martyr, former Marcos critic Senator Ninoy Aquino, Jr. and the worlds recognized icon of democracy, President Cory, his mother, PNoy could not boast of a personal sterling achievement as a legislator. Just the same, the people choose him as the Chief Executive of the Republic. Everything seems to be all right now with PNoy at the helm of national leadership. Now there is no doubt that the Legisla-

tive Branch of government has in shame, wrecked its image with their involvement in the Janet Lim-Napoles engineered pork barrel fraud. A billion peso fraud has effectively denied our fellow citizens with the much-needed projects and services but instead beefed up the already wealthy but still has unashamedly lled some more their deep pockets of some senators and congressman. No less than Senate President Franklin Drilon has expressed his frustration why and how these legislators got allegedly involved in the thievery of the decade in Philippine history. Confronting emergency situations

who brought the man to EVRMC. He intimated to me that he almost forgot his training and did not know what to do when he saw the blood profusely oozing out from one of the wounds. It was good that his friend was a Nurse. Parents have big roles to fill in educating their children when confronted with emergencies or disasters. If they cannot fill in this responsibility, they must at least see to it that they get proper training or education somewhere. Minor children most especially must be properly oriented on the dos and donts when outside the home or when alone. Like, I pointed out to my children that one of the safest places in Tacloban is the City Hall, the sturdiest building in the city. They know that during disasters or calamities, there are always employees around and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office holds a Command Center at the Office of the Mayor. It has complete communication facilities and the people at the City General Services conduct relief operations.

When Miley Cyrus goes to Zamboanga

We are now diverted to Zamboanga. Life in the city has hibernated and paused, but nothing short of loud and eerie. Misuari had made it possible to jerk our attention away from Napoles these past few days to bring to light his intentions of raising his personalized etymology of peace. As our officials scramble to restore peace and order in Zamboanga, we are more engrossed to what we think is more entertaining. We pay more attention to Miley Cyrus and her 360 degree change of image. No veteran understands why we take pleasure in celebrity sex videos and why, at the first place, these had leaked. We pay more attention to ridiculous news rather than to what is more nationally and culturally imperative. We have not yet paved the way for the daang matuwid the current administration is pushing. We have only gone as far as uprooting the weeds of the soil for the daan, to say the least. This is, significantly, because of fraudulent people, but not solely because of them. We have gone only as far as we did because we have been exhibiting apathy. Apathy is a persons sense of dispiritedness towards issues. This refers to our lack of interest to what is more important and affective to us as citizens. This twisted tale of apathy is particularly apparent to the youth, and this is fueled by media. We have to stop talking about ludicrous concerns and start focusing on what is necessary across all aspects. Our -oOoCome to think of it. Why were these religious Catholic leaders so quiet dumb, deaf and blind during the apparently corrupt solid 9-year governance of the questionable and controversial Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presidency? Was it because GMA was so very generous to them? And yet almost all of these scams that have been unearthed happened during GMAs controversial presidency.

The other day, the Tacloban Rescue Unit (TACRU) conducted an Earthquake Drill at City Hall. At exactly 30 minutes after nine in the morning, there was a simultaneous blast of sirens from fire trucks, ambulances and other vehicles that arrived in the area almost at the same time. No one was informed about the drill and so the employees were thrown into panic and surprise. The drill gave the employees a feel of what to do when an earthquake of great magnitude occurs. Emergency situations will always elicit panic, hysteria and fear. It is due to the natural fear for the unknown but when people are aware of what to do and expect on certain occa-

sions, the terror is lessened to some degree. Caught by surprise, peoples lives are imperiled. The need for knowledge, situationers and drills has become imperative to meet the challenges posed by various emergency situations. This reminded me of the account of one of my sons who is trained on emergency respose by no less than the Philippine National Red Cross. One night, he and some friends were faced with a rare situation of confronting a stabbing incident. Everyone was panicky and did not seem to know what to do. They were shocked at the sudden turn of events. No one moved even to call for a vehicle to transport the victim to the hospital. He and a friend were the ones

The simple act of empathy may be enough to keep our fellowmen strong and encouraged. The simple act of empathy plus action is a simple combination which may cease the havoc wreaked by mongrels in Zamboanga and in the Philippines. I dont mind Miley

Cyrus and Wally Bayola or Chito Miranda and the like. But they should be secondary and should consume minute segments of our attention and interest. Should we continue to patronize the absurdity of the above mentioned, we might just aggravate all our crises. Perhaps, if Miley Cyrus decides to go to Zamboanga, go nuts there to keep us focused on this civil crunch, then my focus refracts to her.

THE PARABLE OF THE LAMP

Jesus said to his disciples, No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.

AM I SHINING?
A man scoffingly asked, What advantage has a Christian over any unbeliever like myself? Does not the sun shine on me as on him, this fine day? Yes, replied his companion, but the Christian has two suns shining on him at once one on his body, the other on his soul. At Baptism, we become the children of the light because Jesus begins to shine on our souls. But we need to let this light shine through us on others. No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel (Lk 8:16). We are called to let the goodness of God glow through us. When others see that goodness, they become enlightened. Our smiles, kind words and good deeds are all small reections of Christ, the one mighty light of the world. If we can help others to see more clearly where they are going, and what they are doing, then we place the light of Christ on a lamp stand. A small child was taken to a Cathedral. She sat watching the sun shining through the windows. She asked her mother, What are these people on the windows? They are saints, was the answer. Then the child said, Now, I know what saints are. They are the people who let the light shine through.(His Word for Today by Vima Dasan, SJ, published by Paulines. reasons for their frequent arguments and quarrels; 8. To give the respondent space to ponder upon their relationship, petitioner decided to move out and went to the home of his closest friend for temporary stay but because of his love to her, he would end up in the side of his family considering that he has now three (3) children to support; Respondent, however, instead of finding ways to reconcile with him, continued enjoying with her activities instead of being with her family; 9. Petitioner believes that legal marriage would be the solution to his problem, which is why he decided to marry respondent on January 6, 2005; However, his belief turned out wronged, still respondent was back on his old problematic behavior; 10. Instead of mending her ways, respondent, while her husband and children stayed in their house, abandoned and left her family without any permission or consent and up to the present even a shadow of her person never appeared in their vicinity; 11. Finding the situation as hopeless now, petitioner with his children, finally decided to leave their old house and went home in Caibiran, Biliran; 12. The actuations of respondent are clearly evidence of a paranoia, emotional immaturity and instability [Personality Disorders] which are indicia of grave, incurable, and serious psychological incapacity under Article 36 of the Family Code of the Philippines which are valid ground to render the marriage between petitioner and respondent a nullity; 13. To emphasize, this psychological incapacity of respondent existed before the marriage, and its overt manifestations became more evident after their marriage; Respondent has a personality disorder that is so grave and incurable; 14. Respondent could not give meaning and significance to her marriage, with respondents mental attitude she would be incapacitated to comply with the essential obligations of marriage, like to render mutual love and respect; Respondent had thus shown that she was psychological incapable of complying with her essential marital obligations and it would be to the couples best interest to have their marriage declared null and void in order to free them from what appeared to be an incompatible marriage from the start. WHEREFORE, premises considered, it is respectfully prayed of this Honorable Court, that judgment be rendered declaring as null and void the marriage between petitioner and respondent under Article 36 of the Family Code of the Philippines and other related provisions thereof. Other relief and remedies just and equitable in the premises are likewise prayed for. 3rd day of July, 2013, Alangalang, Leyte for Calubian, Leyte.

House then reeked with nauseating odor in their ranks because of unabated graft and corruption then, the Senate maintained its good name. They were not only noble but also adequately educated. The present crisis of a wrecked-image of the Senate should be a clear revelation to voters. Be responsible. They should be strong enough to do away, discard and vote not for square pegs in round holes, even if one is an avid fan of such candidate movie idols. There is a need for educational leaders to re-orient themselves on the crying needs of the time by restructuring, strengthening curricular offerings in colleges and universities that will prepare future voters to participate intelligently in our elections equipped with the tolls to choose the right candidate for the right ofce. have a lot of things we could talk about. When we got him that PC he was able to play the games he liked when he wanted, visit websites, look for the funniest jokes he could find and post it on every facebook group he was a member of. It was his sanctuary of sorts. After a day of driving Mama around while she did the groceries or doing errands, he would turn on that PC and sit there and do his thing once he got in the house. He passed away a few months back. As I continue being a gamer, so too will I turn to gaming when I need some enjoyment, an escape from the hassles in life. And in a way, there lies a connection with my father, itll be just like hes there when those times come. He left us with a lot of memories, but the one memory where he brought me with him in the car and he drove downtown to get the famicom, which started my love for video games, its one of those that I hold dear and carry with me always and I love him for it. For Papa: The Original Gamer

My love for videogames was ignited by my father, or as we call him at home, Papa. It all began when he borrowed his best friends Atari, and played a few games on it. This was the 80s and at that time, I was a little too young to enjoy it at that stage. Some time later, he brought me with him and he drove us downtown and parked right next to a small store next to Highway Supermart. He left the car for a bit to pick up a very unassuming box wrapped in paper (I forget if it was a newspaper or a calendar). When we got home, he opened the box and inside was a Family Computer. It turns out, he had gone to a family computer center, which was the one right next to the grocery. It was just a small store where kids and sometimes grown-ups paid by the hour to play family computer games. He set it up on our small TV (i can still remember that new family computer smell), and he played Super Mario Bros, and I sat there next to him and watched in wonder. We had that game for a while, and my guess is its because its the only one we could afford then. He became pretty good at it too! He even discovered those warp pipes in World 1-2 on his own, the ones that made him advance a few stages into the game. Since we only had Super Mario, Papa borrowed some of his medical representative friends games. I cant remember all of them, but later on he would buy other games that we could play . I remember him buying and enjoying Ice Climber, WarpMan, Pinball. Papa always loved to challenge himself so he would play to beat the high score for each game, which he was able to do. Papa also loved puzzle games. Tetris was one game he liked a lot. And boy, he loved Pac-Man! We would all watch him play and hed go all the way through each stage, defining his strategy on which path to take. As the years passed, video game consoles got better, but also got a little more complicated. Gone were the simple controllers with just 2 buttons and the directional pad. Papa didnt get into the complicated controllers on newer so when i got my Playstation (a gift they gave me for getting good grades), he never really got into the newer games that required the use of multiple buttons to enjoy. So he settled for solitaire, scrabble, pac-man knockoffs on the PC. Later, I moved on to my PS2 (which my dad also bought for the family, since he wanted a DVD player, and I wanted the console for the games, and the PS2 had both). I tried getting some games I thought he might like on it, but he didnt enjoy it as much. Much later, Papa started playing some Plants Vs Zombies, Bejeweled and Zuma... Zuma being his favorite. There was only one PC at home that time and he couldnt play when we were on our facebook and gaming marathons, so last year, my sister and I chipped in and bought him his own PC, where he he was able to play his games, and keep in touch with old friends and relatives. He also enjoyed searching for his favorite music from yesteryears in youtube. At times, listening through the headphones, and he sings along not knowing it was out loud already. My father, was the original gamer in the family. A spark he lit that I carry with me, a hobby that has given me hours of enjoyment, an escape from the worries and sadness that presents itself many times in life. A way to enjoy and compete with friends. We didnt really have a very close relationship like how dads and their sons share love for sports, or go out fishing or hang out. We just had the games way back. I was into geeky stuff, so we didnt really
