New standards concerning efficiency published

The IEC has introduced two new standards concerning
energy efficient motors. IEC/EN 60034-2-1 specifies
new rules concerning efficiency testing methods,
and IEC 60034-30 defines new efficiency classes for
motors.

IEC/EN 60034-2-1; 2007

IEC 60034-30; 2008

The new standard IEC/EN 60034-2-1, which came

into force September 2007, introduces new rules
concerning the testing methods to be used for
determining losses and efficiency.
It offers two ways of determining the efficiency; direct
method and indirect method. The new standard
specifies following parameters for determining the
efficiency according to indirect method:
reference temperature
three options for determining additional load
losses: measurement, estimation and
mathematical.
Under the new standard ABB uses the indirect
calculation method, additional load losses determined
from measuring.
The resulting efficiency values differ from those
obtained under the previous IEC testing standard, IEC
60034-2: 1996. It must be noted that efficiency values
are only comparable if they are measured using the
same method.
The motor documentation must state which method is
used.
The efficiency values on the technical data pages in
this catalogue are given according to both new and old
calculation methods.
The table below shows the differences between old
and new standard.

IEC 60034-30: October 2008 defines three IE

(International Efficiency) efficiency classes of singlespeed, three phase, cage induction motors.

Old efficiency testing standard

EN/IEC 60034-2: 1996
Direct method
Indirect method:
PLL (= additional losses) estimated at 0.5 % of
input power at rated load

IE1 = Standard efficiency (efficiency levels roughly

equivalent to EFF2 in Europe nowadays)
IE2 = High efficiency (efficiency levels roughly
equivalent to EFF1 in Europe nowadays and
identical to EPAct in USA for 60 Hz)
IE3 = Premium efficiency (new efficiency class
in Europe nowadays and identical to "NEMA
Premium" in the USA for 60Hz)
Efficiency levels defined in IEC 60034-30 are based on
tests methods specified in IEC 60034-2-1: 2007.
Compared to old efficiency classes acc. to CEMEP
agreement the scope been expanded.
IEC 60034-30 covers almost industrial motors (for
example standard, hazardous area, marine, brake
motors):
Single-speed, three-phase, 50 Hz and 60 Hz
2, 4 or 6-pole
Rated output from 0.75 to 375 kW
Rated voltage UN up to 1000 V
Duty type S1 (continuous duty) or S3 (intermittent
periodic duty) with a rated cyclic duration factor of
80% or higher
Capable of operating direct online
Following motors are excluded from IEC 60034-30:
Motors made solely for converter operation
Motors completely integrated into a machine (for
example, pump, fan and compressor) that cannot
be tested separately from the machine

Insulation
ABB uses class F insulation systems, which, with
temperature rise B, is the most common requirement
among industry today.

Class B rise

Class F 155 C
Class B 130 C
Class H 180 C

The use of Class F insulation with Class B temperature

rise gives ABB products a 25 C safety margin. This can
be used to increase the loading by up to 12 per cent for
limited periods, to operate at higher ambient temperatures or altitudes, or with greater voltage and frequency
tolerances. It can also be used to extend insulation life.
For instance, a 10 K temperature reduction will extend the
insulation life.

Frequency converter drives for Industrial performance motors

Squirrel cage induction motors offer excellent
availability, reliability and efficiency. They can deliver
even greater value when used in conjunction with
frequency converters, which are also known as variable
speed drives (VSDs). The benefits include soft starting,
low starting current and stepless speed control over
a wide range to suit the needs of the application. In
addition, frequency converter drives usually produces
significant energy savings and reductions in emissions.

At the same time, however, certain factors have to be

addressed during the design and selection of motors
intended for variable speed operation.
ABBs Industrial performance range includes motors
suitable for use with frequency converters, and especially with ABB Standard Drives such as the ACS550
series. For more demanding applications the use of
ABB Process performance motors and ABB Industrial
Drives is recommended.
When selecting Industrial performance motors for
variable speed use, the following points should be
taken into consideration:
1. Dimensioning
The voltage (or current) fed by the frequency converter
is not purely sinusoidal. This may increase the motor
losses, vibration and noise levels. Furthermore, the
distribution of losses may be changed, which may also
affect the motors temperature rise. The motor and
converter must therefore be evaluated as a combination
to ensure that the dimensioning is correct.
When using ABB frequency converters, please use
ABB's DriveSize program for dimensioning purposes.
This tool incorporates selection rules based on
comprehensive combined type tests. If dimensioning
is done manually, please note that the loadability
curves provided in this catalogue (Figure 3 and 4) and
respective manuals are indicative only: exact motor and
converter specific values are available on request.
2. Speed range
When a motor is controlled by a frequency converter its
actual operating speed may deviate considerably from
nominal (i.e. the speed stamped on the rating plate).
In the case of higher speeds, ensure that the highest
permissible rotational speed of the motor, or the critical
speed of the equipment as a whole, is not exceeded.
The following points should also be checked for high
speed operation:

Guideline maximum speed values for Industrial

performance aluminum motors are shown in Figure 1.
Exact values are available on request.

performance motors with aluminum frames:

3. Cooling
In low speed operation the cooling capacity of the fan
decreases, which reduces the load capacity of the
motor. A separate constant speed fan can be used to
increase cooling capacity and loadability at low speeds.
If the motor is fitted with a plastic fan, this may be worth
replacing with a metal one for high speed operation.
4. Lubrication
Variable speed operation affects the bearing temperature, so the grease type and relubrication intervals, and
the lifetime of sealed bearings should be checked. More
information can be found in product specific sections
of this catalogue and in ABBs Low Voltage Motors
Manual.
5. Insulation protection
A frequency converter supply causes higher voltage
stresses on the motor windings than a sinusoidal supply. The insulation system and, in some cases, filters
must be selected according to the voltage and converter
type in question. See Figure 2 for information on selecting the insulation system and filters.
6. Bearing currents
Bearing voltages and currents must be avoided in all
motors. For reliability reasons, insulated bearings and/
or properly dimensioned filters at the converter output
must be used according to the selection rules shown in
Figure 2. When ordering, clearly state which alternative
will be used.
For more information about bearing currents and
voltages, please contact ABB.

7. Cabling, grounding and EMC

Cabling and grounding arrangements can have a
significant effect on the performance and reliability
of frequency converter controlled motors. Motors
must be cabled using shielded symmetrical cables
and cable glands providing 360 bonding (also called
EMC glands). For motors up to 30 kW unsymmetric
cables can be used, but shielded cables are always
recommended.

manual Grounding and cabling of the drive system

(Code: 3AFY 61201998 R0125 REV B) and in ABBs
Low Voltage Motors Manual.
In order to meet EMC requirements, special EMC
cable(s) must be used in addition to the correct cable
gland mounting, with special, extra earthing pieces.
Please refer to the frequency converter manuals.

More information about grounding and cabling for

variable speed drive systems can be found in the
Figure 2. Selection rules for insulation and filtering in variable speed drive systems. The information shown in this figure is valid
for the applicable motors in the Industrial performance range in conjunction with ACS800 and ACS550 drives with uncontrolled
DC voltage. For other alternatives and converter types, please contact ABB.

dU/dt filter (reactor)

DU/dt filters are series reactors which decrease the rate of change of the phase and main voltages and thus reduce the voltage stresses in the
windings. DU/dt filters also decrease common mode currents and the risk of bearing currents.
Common mode filter
Common mode filters reduce common mode currents in variable speed applications and thus decrease the risk of bearing currents. Common
mode filters do not significantly affect the phase or main voltages on the motor terminals.
Insulated Bearings
Bearings with insulated inner or outer races are used as the standard solution. Hybrid bearings, i.e. those with non-conductive ceramic balls,
can also be used in special applications. More information for spare part selection is available on request.

Drain holes

Motors are provided with closable plastic plugs in the

drain holes (see diagram below). The plugs will be
open on delivery. When mounting the motors it should
be ensured that the drain holes face downwards. In
the case of vertical mounting, the upper plug must be

hammered home completely. In very dusty environments both plugs should be hammered home.

Transport locking
Motors provided with roller bearings or angular contact
ball bearings are fitted with a transport lock to prevent damage to the bearings, due to vibration, during
transport.

Axially-locked bearings
The table below shows which of the motors bearings
are axially locked in the bearing seat. In motor sizes
63 to 80 the locking is done by an internal retaining
ring, in motor sizes 90 to 280 by an inner bearing
cover.

Lubrication
The motors are delivered with bearing grease for use
at normal temperatures in dry or humid environments.
The motors are lubricated for ambient temperatures
40C and in some cases even above 40C, see table 1
next page.
Motor sizes 63 to 250 are provided with shielded bearings. As an option, motor sizes 90 to 250 are provided
with grease nipples for regreasing, see variant code
041 under the heading Bearings and lubrications.
Motor size 280 is provided with grease nipples for regreasing as standard.
The lubrication interval L1, suitable for relubricated
bearings, is defined as the number of operating hours
after which 99 per cent of the bearings are adequately
lubricated.

Lubrication intervals and grease quantities are specified on a plate on the motor as well as in the manual
supplied with the motor.
The grease lifetime L10, suitable for permanent lubricated bearings, is defined as the number of operating hours after which 90 per cent of the bearings are
adequately lubricated. 50 per cent of the bearings
achieve two times this figure. Maximum lifetime, however, should be regarded as 40000 hours.
In case of high ambient temperatures the shaft loads
must be reduced compared to permissible loadings in
the table (see pages 18 to 19), please contact ABB.

In vertically mounted motors, the grease lifetime is half the figures above.
For applications corresponding to the empty cells in the table, please contact ABB. These applications can imply reduced lifetime for bearings and
winding.
Motors with roller bearings (optional) have considerably shorter grease life. For continuous operation regreasing nipples should be considered.

Lubrication intervals
ABB follows the L1-principle in defining lubrication
interval. That means that 99% of the motors are sure
to make the interval time. The lubrication intervals can
also be calculated according to the L10-principle, which
are normally doubled compared to L1-values. Values
available from ABB at request.

Bearing life

The life of bearings is dependent on various factors

such as bearing load, motor speed, operating temperature and the purity of the grease. The permissible radial
and axial loading for different motor sizes is shown in
the table on the following pages.
The table is valid for 50 Hz. For 60 Hz and/or some
other bearing life than specified in the table the values
are changed according to the table on the right.

The table values assume the occurrence of only radial

or axial forces. In the case of simultaneous radial and
axial forces information can be supplied on request. It
is assumed that the radial force is applied at the end of
the motor shaft.

The bearing life, L10, is calculated according to SKFs

theory on bearing life L10aah, which also takes the
purity of the grease into consideration. An adequate
lubrication is a necessary prerequisite for the table at
right.

If the radial force is applied between points X0 and Xmax,

the permissible force FR can be calculated from the
following formula:

The nominal life is defined as the number of hours that

are attained or exceeded by 90% of identical bearings,
in a large test series, under certain specified conditions. 50% of the bearings attain a life of as much as
5 times this figure.

where:
D = diameter of pulley, mm
P = power requirement, kW
n = motor speed, r/min.
K = belt tension factor, dependent on belt type and
type of duty. A common value for V-belts is
K = 2.5

Permissible axial forces

The following tables give the permissible axial forces in
Newtons, assuming zero axial force, ambient temperature of 25C. The values are based on normal conditions at 50 Hz with standard bearings and calculated
bearing lives of 20,000 and 40,000 hours.

For two-speed motors, the values are to be based on

the higher speed. The permissible loads of simultaneous radial and axial forces will be supplied on request.
Given axial forces FAD, assumes D-bearing locked by
means of locking ring.

M000022

At 60 Hz the values are to be reduced by 10%.

Rating plates
Single-speed motors of size 63 to 132 are stamped
with 50 and 60 Hz at voltage code S and D. The current
rating for each voltage range is specified on the rating
plate. It represents the highest current that can exist
within the voltage range at the rated output. The power
factor and speed specified on the rating plate apply at
400 V 50 Hz and 460 V 60 Hz.

Single-speed motors of size 160 to 280 are stamped

with 50 and 60 Hz at voltage code S and D. The rating
plate is arranged in the form of a table with values for
current, power factor and motor speed at six voltages.

The bullets in the product code indicate choice of

mounting arrangement, voltage and frequency,
generation code (see ordering information page).

Efficiency values are given according to both IEC/EN 60034-2-1; 2007 and IEC 60034-2; 1996.
Please note that the values are not comparable without knowing the testing method. ABB has calculated
the new efficiency values according to indirect method, stray losses (additional losses) determined from measuring.

ABB has calculated
the new efficiencvalues acc. to indirect method, stray losses (additional losses) determined from measuring.
