VFW Post No. 3020 has been at-
tempting to restore its building since a
fire from Easter of last year destroyed
the property.
We really just want to get back to
helping our community. Thats what
weve been about for the past 30 years,
said Carl Clegg, quartermaster at the
VFW and an Iraq War veteran. [Help-
ing others] is what we do best. The fire
has kept us from doing that.
The building was condemned after
the fire, forcing the non-profit to start
over.
According to Clegg, the building is
the same square footage and a few feet
back from the original location. The
project is being done incrementally, or
when the insurance company provides
another check.
Theyre dispensing only so much
money at a time, Clegg said.
Currently, the organization is at-

The Delran Sun
Delran residents will get the
chance to once again find employ-
ment through the townships
website.
The former job board on the
Delran Township website will be
reinstated, according to Mayor
Ken Paris, who wants to give Del-
ran residents and businesses a
way to connect for economic
growth.
(Business administrator) Jeff
Hatcher and I brought the idea to
council at the Sept. 11 work ses-
sion, Paris said. The job bank is
meant to have local businesses
advertise job opportunities to Del-
ran residents during these tough
economic times when jobs are
hard to find.
Additionally, there will be a
separate page outlining the avail-
able commercial property.
The vacant commercial prop-
erty site allows the township to
socialize to commercial business-
es in the neighboring communi-
ties the availability of properties
that exist in Delran, Paris said.
An example is the Sam's Club
property on Route 130. The entire
shopping center is vacant, and
I'm hoping by advertising the
property, a developer would be in-
terested in it.
Paris is hopeful the prime lo-
cation in Delran is transformed
into a medical center. An exten-
sion to a hospital would be ideal,
he said.
The applications for the sites
will be mailed when the yearly
mercantile licenses are sent out,
according to Hatcher. The appli-
cations are expected to be mailed
in the next few months, he said.
We will put in information

in our opinion
By MAYOR KEN PARIS
Special to The Sun
The township has put an emphasis on
applying for grants to help augment the
municipal tax dollars, and we have been
very successful in the last several years in
receiving these grants.
The following are some projects that are
currently in the process of construction
and/or current applications that are await-
ing a decision from the funding source.
Awarded
Stewart Avenue
The project has been advertised and a
bid opening was scheduled for Sept. 4. We
have been advised from CDBG that Delran
will be awarded a grant in the amount of
$65,000 to complete the project. We are cur-
rently reviewing the bid submissions, and
a decision to move forward will be made
shortly.
Fairview Street sidewalk improve-
ments
The township received a $200,000 grant
from the Safe Streets to Transit program
for the installation of a sidewalk along
Fairview Street. Project plans and contract
documents have been completed. The proj-
ect is advertised and the bid opening is
scheduled for September.
Route 130 sidewalks
The township received a $250,000 grant
from the Safe Streets to Transit program
for the installation of sidewalks on Route
130 where sidewalks dont currently exist.
Haines Mill Road Phase 5 (Conrow
Road to Moorestown)
The township received a $200,000 grant
from the NJDOT Municipal Aid program
for the resurfacing of Haines Mill Road
from Conrow Road to the Moorestown mu-

all is officially here, and that
can mean only one thing. No,
not football. Or pumpkin spice
lattes. Or back to school. Or Hal-
loween. Or Thanksgiving.
Its election season!
OK, so maybe youre not as excited
as we are, but you should be. You cant
vote on the next president of the Unit-
ed States this fall that wont come for
another three years but the 2013 elec-
tion will probably have a greater im-
pact on your day-to-day life than that
anyway.
Thats because New Jerseys guber-
natorial race will highlight the Nov. 5
General Election, with incumbent Re-
publican Chris Christie taking on
state Senate Democrat Barbara
Buono.
Didnt realize this was happening?
Then you probably havent watched
any television, listened to any radio,
read any newspapers or surfed the
web at all over the last few months.
That barrage of political advertising
is only going to increase as we creep
closer and closer to election day.
The governor in New Jersey has a
much bigger impact on your day-to-
day life than the president of our na-
tion. His or her administrations deci-
sions affect you more immediately,
from the taxes you pay, to the cost of
your insurance, to the availability of
jobs, to how fast youre allowed to
drive on the highway, and so on.
Sure, the president gets more public-
ity for his actions, but what his admin-
istration does has more of a longer-
lasting impact on your life.
The point here is that, despite its
less attractive appeal although this
Christie vs. Buono race certainly is at-
tractive as a New Jersey resident,
should be just as interested in this
election, and just as willing to vote, as
you are for the next president.
So go to the polls on Nov. 5 to cast
your vote.
In addition to the governors race,
you will have the chance, in many
towns and boroughs, to vote for school
board candidates and council/commit-
tee/mayoral candidates. When the
dust has settled, this could end up
being one of the more impactful elec-
tions on your daily life in recent mem-
ory.
Dont be lazy. Dont feel like Nov. 5,
2013, isnt as special as Nov. 6, 2012,
was or as special as Nov. 8, 2016, will
be. Thats simply not true for New Jer-
seyans.
And if youre really in the voting
spirit now, dont forget you can vote on
Oct. 16 in a special election for a U.S.
Senate seat between Democrat Cory
Booker and Steve Lonegan.
This is going to be fun. Are you
ready to participate?
Get up off your couch and vote
This election is more impactful for N.J. residents than presidential race
Your thoughts
Do you plan on voting in the Nov. 5
General Election? Why or why not? Do
you think it holds the same importance
as a presidential election? Let your
voice be heard through a letter to the
editor.

tempting to weatherize the build-
ing installing windows and
shingles on the roof so its ready
for winter.
Its hard to say exactly when
well run out of money. We have
projected within the next month
and that will be it, Clegg said.
The VFW is pursuing other fi-
nancial options, including a bank
loan.
We are looking into options as
far as funds are concerned to fill
in the gaps. Were hopeful a loan
will come through, Clegg said.
Its just hard to get a loan for a
non-profit.
The VFW has been holding its
meetings at the Delran firehouse.
According to Clegg, the depart-
ment has been accommodating
and hospitable. Additionally, the
department held a boot-fundrais-
er to assist the VFW, collecting
money along Route 130.
It was really fantastic, Clegg
said.
The VFW has been holding
fundraisers to assist with money
issues. The organization has or-
ganized ladies auxiliary
fundraisers, an upcoming pig
roast and a large scale 50/50.
Theyre considering raffling a car
or motorcycle and have already
raffled a $1,000 gift certificate in
addition to hosting a golf outing.
Weve really run the gamut on
fundraising, Clegg said. Its
been our mission to fundraise for
many local charities in the Del-
ran and Riverside area, including
the Boy Scouts and fire depart-
ment. Its strange to be in that po-
sition to need that money.
According to Clegg, a referen-
dum will be on the ballot this No-
vember, further assisting the
VFW to rebuild.
According to the 16th Legisla-
tive Districts website, the bill,
sponsored by state Sens. Kip
Bateman and Dawn Marie Ad-
diego, would give veterans or-
ganizations more flexibility to
manage their costs. Gov. Christie
signed the legislation.
The measure, S-87, allows those
organizations to use the net pro-
ceeds from games of chance to
support their organizations fi-
nancially. Voters will have the
chance to approve the proposal
on a ballot question in November.
Non-profits and organizations
that serve our veterans have un-
dergone difficult times in recent
years, as many people have had
less to give because of economic
hardships, Bateman said in a re-
lease. This bill gives veterans
groups additional financial flexi-
bility by allowing them to tap a
new stream of revenues to help
pay their bills.
There has been fantastic sup-

Weve done it before in years past
when times were kind of hard.
The mayor felt it was time to
bring it back and run it for
awhile.
According to Hatcher, the pro-
gram has found success in the
past, with business owners and
recently-employed residents
thanking the township for the op-
portunity. More than 300 busi-
nesses are targeted to receive the
information from the township,
Hatcher said.
We only had sporadic respons-
es from the businesses in the past
because it was tough economic
times, so there werent that many
openings then, Hatcher said.
It's utilizing a social network
that reaches out to the public in
the pursuit of local qualified can-
didates, Paris said.
The township is aiming to as-
sist local businesses the best way
it can, given the tough economic
times.
Any way we can help both the
residents in town and Delran
businesses is good, Hatcher said.
They found it beneficial in the
past when we talked with them.
Links to look around on the job
board are not available just yet.
Applications will be out in the
next month and a half, Hatcher
said. From there, it will be a short
timeline before the board is
launched.
Only reason they have to wait
is not to incur mailing costs,
Hatcher said.
The township will announce
when the service is available.

T
he MaGrann Construction

the building business. Mark (36
years), Earl (34 years) and James
(30 years) have been building,
renovating and remodeling hun-
dreds of homes in this area for
more than 30 years. MaGrann
Construction focuses on quality
and customer service. Its prompt
and positive response to clients
needs are among the reasons
why MaGrann Constructions list
of satisfied customers continues
to grow. The remodeling team of-
fers a wide array of renovation
services. New designer kitchens
and baths are the most desirable
upgrades for your existing home,
adding value, comfort and luxury.
Whether considering an addition
or a small kitchen update, Ma-
Grann offers unparalleled value
and style.
Read what MaGrann Construc-
tions clients have to say:
Thank you for caring about
your clients and the reputation of
your company enough to hire the
ver y best! From the ver y begin-
ning of our project, Earl has been
a true gentleman and profes-
sional. We have had the pleasure
of having James on site. His work-
manship is top notch. Both these
men do your company proud. We
look forward to working with Earl
and James for phase two. Cheryl
and Brian, Medford
Just wanted to pass along my
thanks for the great work Earl and
James did on the remodel! They
could not have been easier to
work with, and having people you
trust in your home is such a good
feeling. Rick, Cherry Hill
From the very first encounter
with Earl and James, we knew it
was going to be a positive experi-
ence. Earl listened to our wishes
and added his own professional
insight, reassuring us that we
were working with someone like
minded, open, extremely knowl-
edgeable and honest. We look
forward to using your company in
future projects and will sing your
praise to all! Doreen, Haddon-

stantially complete. We are wait-
ing for pavement cores to be com-
pleted to close out the project
with NJDOT.
NJDOT fiscal year 2012
municipal aid
The township received a
$205,000 grant for continued
resurfacing of Tenby Chase
Drive.
We also have a couple smaller
grants in public works recycling
and clean communities.
They are:
New Jersey recycling tonnage
grant, which we received in 2012
for $52,493
The Clean Communities
Grant for $29,406

Applications have been submit-
ted for municipal aid (Tenby

Road bikeway) and Safe Streets to
Transit (Hartford Road sidewalk)
grant programs.
Burlington County munici-
pal Park Grant Round 4
A grant application has been
submitted for Phase 2 improve-
ments to Delran Community Park
for restrooms and concession
building, tot lot and sports light-
ing.
The township previously re-
ceived a $250,000 grant for the
first phase of this project.
Shoreline Protection Pro-
gram/NJDEP Coastal Engi-
neering
We have submitted an applica-
tion for a grant to fund restora-
tion and stabilization of the erod-
ed berm along River Road, adja-
cent to the Rancocas Creek.
FEMA Hazard Mitigation
Grant Program
Two letters of intent were sub-
mitted to the Burlington County
Office of Emergency Manage-
ment. We applied for both, prop-
erty acquisition (buyout and con-
version to open space) and flood
mitigation (elevation increase)
projects.
Delran Township is very proud
of the success that we have had
applying for state and county mu-
nicipal grants, and we will contin-
ue to pursue grants in the future
in an effort to keep our taxes sta-
ble.

port. I dont think you can ask for
better, Clegg said.
According to Clegg, communi-
ty members have offered support
to the VFW.
It has been an organization
that has been part of the commu-
nity as the local post office or the
local coffee shop, Clegg said.
Clegg is hopeful to be back in
the building by the end of the
year.
If we are able to secure fund-
ing, we expect to be in the build-
ing by the end of the year, but we
have no guarantee of that, Clegg
said.
The VFW will be adding a do-
nation button to its website for
residents to make a tax-de-
ductible donation. For more infor-
mation or to make a donation,
