PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Nowadays, mobile phone is not just a necessity but it has become one of mans basic units. Everyone has his own mobile phone, and it now comes in different sizes, styles, colors and has its own application suitable for each user. Due to the rapidly advancing mobile telecommunication technology and its accessibility, why not make it possible it to incorporate a mobile phone into a home appliances controller system.

Literature and Studies This paper presents the design and implementation of AT modem driver, text based command processing software, and power failure resilient output for a microcontroller to facilitate in sending and receiving data via the cell module, together with the design of Java application to enable the cell phone to send commands and receive alerts through the cell module (Van Der Werff, M.; Massey Univ., Palmerston North; Gui, X.; Xu, W.L.)

Proposal Idea The idea is to enhance an existing study about controlling appliances with the use of a mobile phone. To enhance the said study we are proposing SMS Controller System wherein we are to control four (4) multiple appliances, specifically a lamp, an air conditioning unit, a television and an electric fan.

II.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES

General Objectives: To enhance the capabilities of the existing Appliance Controller via SMS

Specific Objectives: To create an Appliance Controller via SMS system that is capable of: a. Turning ON four appliances b. Turning OFF four appliances c. Sending a confirmation to the user

To evaluate the effectiveness of the system in terms of: a. Accuracy b. Efficiency c. Reliability

III.

DESIGN SIGNIFICANCE

The study is to enhance an existing study on SMS controller system. The study could be beneficial to the following: User The study could make it easier and accessibly control appliances with the use of a mobile phone even when the user is outdoors. Students This can serve as students reference for future studies and researches. Faculty This will help the faculty to provide a number of written design documents that might be needed in the future as reference of their future students.
