The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders started its
seasonal flu and pneumonia vac-
cine clinics for adult county resi-
dents on Sept. 16 and will contin-
ue with a total of 19 clinics coun-
tywide through Dec. 30.
It is important to get a flu shot
every year because influenza
viruses continually change and
vaccine success depends, in part,
on the match between the types of
virus in the vaccine and the virus
occurring among members of the
public, said freeholder director
Joe Donnelly.
Residents with computer ac-
cess should schedule their flu
shot by visiting the health depart-
ment website, www.co.burling-
ton.nj.us/health. People can cur-
rently schedule their appoint-
ments online. Residents who have
scheduled their appointment on-
line and bring the printed and
completed consent form will be
fast tracked through the clinic.
Walk-ins will still be welcomed
but may have to wait in line.

usual higher risk groups, such as

The Lenape Regional High
School District Foundation donat-
ed $29,000 to help pay for former
Boston Celtics player Chris Her-
ren to speak to every student
about drug abuse and his person-
al story.
The money was donated at the
board of education meeting last
week, and was collected through
various fundraisers.
The speaking engagement sup-
ports the districts Defy the Issue
program, which teaches students
the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
We support everything from
the theatre to a number of differ-
ent projects for the district, said
Ed OMalley, chairman of the
LRHSD Foundation.
According to superintendent of
schools Carol Birnbohm, a staffer
attended Herrens speaking en-
gagement while he was in New
Jersey. The staff member report-
ed that it was imperative each stu-
dent hear about Herrens story.
According to Herrens website,
theherrenproject.org, Herren is a
basketball legend from Fall River,
Mass. He realized his dreams by
playing for the Celtics in the
NBA, only to lose it all to addic-
tion. Herren has been drug-free
and alcohol-free since Aug. 1,
2008. He has refocused his life to
put sobriety and family first. Off
the court, Herren continues to
share his story with audiences in
the hopes of reaching just one
person and making a difference
in their life.
With the release of his memoir,
Basketball Junkie, in May 2011,
Herren was approached by hun-
dreds of people and their families
looking for assistance in their
road to recovery. Inspired by their
stories, he formed The Herren
Project to educate at-risk popula-
tions on addiction and help oth-
ers in taking the first steps to-
ward recovery and a life of sobri-
ety, the website said.
His story to recovery is amaz-
ing. He would go as far as pur-
chasing cocaine in his Celtics jer-
sey, OMalley said. Its sad kids
are taking prescription pills out
of their parents cabinet. Thats
all it takes. Were really excited
about the difference he can
make.
Two programs will be running
at Cherokee, Lenape, Shawnee
and Seneca high schools through-
out the first semester, ensuring

take part in only the algebra por-
tion of the exam. The field test
will allow the Tabernacle schools
to get a preview of what the as-
sessment will look like a year
early.
Our district is in a position,
with upgraded technology, robust
Wi-Fi and our laptop carts, to be a
great place for these field tests to
take place, superintendent
George Rafferty said. Having the
proper technology and network
in place will now allow our teach-
ers and students the opportunity
to see this assessment before it is
a part of the curriculum next
year.
Students in Tabernacle are ac-
customed to taking interactive as-
sessments online, so Rafferty felt
the transition would be an easy
one.
We have utilized online as-
sessments in the past for our stu-
dents in kindergarten through
second grade and have looked to
expand that to third through
eighth grade. Our students are in
a position where they will be used
to completing assessments on-
line, Rafferty said.
In other news:
The district will refinance
bonds at a lower rate in hopes of
saving hundreds of thousands of
dollars over the next decade. Tab-
ernacle has carried debt at a rate
of approximately 4 percent. The
new rate would be closer to 3 per-
cent, saving the district $340,000-
350,000 over the next 11 years.
Members of the board conduct-
ed walkthroughs at both Olson
Middle School and Tabernacle El-
ementary School before the start
of the academic year. President
Michael Lee said the board en-
joyed having the opportunity to
see where the money from resolu-
tions it has approved was actually
going. He was also impressed
with how the classrooms were set
up and was hopeful for more
tours in the future.
The board is currently in ne-
gotiations with Rafferty about an
extension to his contract. Accord-
ing to Lee, they are still working
on a draft, and once a tentative
agreement is reached, it will be
presented at a future meeting for
public comment.
One additional teacher in-
service day for professional train-
ing has been added to the school
calendar on Friday, March 7. Be-
cause students will now have that
day off, a day had to be added to
the end of the school calendar to
meet the state-required 180 days.
Classes will now end on June 18
with a half-day for students fol-
lowed by graduation that
evening.
The next board of education
meeting is scheduled for Monday,
Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in OMS.

systems and pregnant women, all youths
through age 23 are advised by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention to re-
ceive seasonal flu vaccines this year to re-
duce the spread of flu in schools.
The county clinic is for adults age 18 and
older but parents can take their children to
physicians for flu vaccines and many other
county locales will be giving the seasonal
flu vaccine, including Southern Jersey
Family Medical Centers
(http://www.sjfmc.org/) in Burlington City
and Pemberton.
For people who have not been immu-
nized against pneumonia, pneumo vac-
cine is recommended for people who have
not had one in five years and if the first
one was given before age 65.
Influenza is a very contagious illness
with pneumonia being one of the most
common complications in high-risk
groups. To prevent transmission to high-
risk groups, seasonal flu vaccine is also
recommended for health care providers;
household contacts (including children) of
high-risk people, and caregivers of chil-
dren.
The county health department accepts
Medicare Part B to cover the cost for sea-
sonal flu and pneumonia vaccines. A dona-
tion of $15 for seasonal flu vaccine and $25
for pneumo is recommended by those not
covered by Medicare if residents can af-
ford it.
People who have Medicare coverage
and belong to a managed care plan
or HMO, should go to their regular
health care providers to receive immuniza-
tions.

F
all is officially here, and that
can mean only one thing. No,
not football. Or pumpkin spice
lattes. Or back to school. Or Hal-
loween. Or Thanksgiving.
Its election season!
OK, so maybe youre not as excited
as we are, but you should be. You cant
vote on the next president of the Unit-
ed States this fall that wont come for
another three years but the 2013 elec-
tion will probably have a greater im-
pact on your day-to-day life than that
anyway.
Thats because New Jerseys guber-
natorial race will highlight the Nov. 5
General Election, with incumbent Re-
publican Chris Christie taking on
state Senate Democrat Barbara
Buono.
Didnt realize this was happening?
Then you probably havent watched
any television, listened to any radio,
read any newspapers or surfed the
web at all over the last few months.
That barrage of political advertising
is only going to increase as we creep
closer and closer to election day.
The governor in New Jersey has a
much bigger impact on your day-to-
day life than the president of our na-
tion. His or her administrations deci-
sions affect you more immediately,
from the taxes you pay, to the cost of
your insurance, to the availability of
jobs, to how fast youre allowed to
drive on the highway, and so on.
Sure, the president gets more public-
ity for his actions, but what his admin-
istration does has more of a longer-
lasting impact on your life.
The point here is that, despite its
less attractive appeal although this
Christie vs. Buono race certainly is at-
tractive as a New Jersey resident,
should be just as interested in this
election, and just as willing to vote, as
you are for the next president.
So go to the polls on Nov. 5 to cast
your vote.
In addition to the governors race,
you will have the chance, in many
towns and boroughs, to vote for school
board candidates and council/commit-
tee/mayoral candidates. When the
dust has settled, this could end up
being one of the more impactful elec-
tions on your daily life in recent mem-
ory.
Dont be lazy. Dont feel like Nov. 5,
2013, isnt as special as Nov. 6, 2012,
was or as special as Nov. 8, 2016, will
be. Thats simply not true for New Jer-
seyans.
And if youre really in the voting
spirit now, dont forget you can vote on
Oct. 16 in a special election for a U.S.
Senate seat between Democrat Cory
Booker and Steve Lonegan.
This is going to be fun. Are you
ready to participate?
Get up off your couch and vote

Additionally, a ninth speaking

LDTV created a commercial,
which can be viewed on the dis-
trict website.
According to OMalley, a sched-

In other news:
Birnbohm reported a success-
ful first day of school, thanking
the department of transportation
for a smooth start. She noted how
energized and enthused staff
members were after summer
break. On opening day, teachers
were provided with a district
presentation, which addressed
digital footprint and professional
development. The staff was also
given an overview of the new
evaluation tools.
Former LRHSD board of edu-

years at the LRHSD and he spent
33 years as an educator in the

Seneca was voted No. 2 in the
