A virtual m achine can be used to run another OS on your current OS (e.g. run Windows 98 on your Windows XP system ). Attached is Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and a Windows 98 Virtual Machine prem ade ready to use! You can use t his im age t o r un gam es w hich m ay not w or k on your m oder n com put er w it hout ef f ect ing your cur r ent oper at ing syst em .
Inst allat ion and Set up: Follow each st ep t o complet e t he inst allat ion of your Virt ualPC. First download Microsoft Virt ual PC, eit her t he 32bit or 64bit version: Download Microsoft Virt ual PC 2007 - 32 bit version Download Microsoft Virt ual PC 2007 - 64 bit version Also download t he Windows 98 Virt ual Machine and unpack it anywhere you like: Download Windows 98 Virt ual Machine
Aft er downloading, run t he set up program and inst all Virt ual PC. Aft er inst alling, run Virt ual PC and you should aut omat ically get t o t he New Virt ual Machine Wizard. Keep clicking next unt il you get t o t his screen:
Click t he Add an exist ing virt ual machine but t on like on t he screenshot above. Click Next and you will be able t o select t he Virt ual Machine you want t o add. Click Browse, go t o t he locat ion in which you unpacked t he Windows 98 Virt ual Machine and open it . Again, click next and you will get t o t he following screen:
Uncheck t he When I click Finish, open Set t ings but t on, as it is not necessary for it t o be opened. Click Finish and you will end up in t he Virt ual PC Console:
You can now click on t he Windows 98 machine and t he click t he St art but t on. Windows 98 will now boot in a window. You can go t o Full Screen mode by pressing t he right ALT but t on and ENTER at t he same t ime, or by clicking Act ion and t hen clicking Full-Screen Mode if you like. Once Windows 98 has boot ed you will get t his window:
Simply click t he OK but t on and you will get t o t he deskt op. As you can see, DOSBox 0.72 is also inst alled. It is already set up do you'll have no problem t rying t o mount your drives. For t he CD drive you can add your own CD drive, if it doesn't work already, by clicking CD and t hen click Use Physical Drive D: (or E: or what ever you use as your DVD drive). You can also use an ISO or anot her CD image, by clicking Capt ure ISO image... in t he CD menu. To remove t he image, click Release " * name of image* " in t he CD menu. If you want t o copy files from your comput er t o you Virt ual Machine, you can simply drag t hem from any folder ont o your Virt ual Machine and t hey will get copied t here. Hopefully it all works for you. If not , be sure t o ask quest ions as we will be happy t o help you out ! Enjoy!

Thanks very much for t his! I can finally play all my old games again! I do have a quest ion t hough, t he Display Adapt er for t his virt ual machine is an S3 card of some sort wit h 4MB of VRAM. Will t his limit t he performance of t he games t hat can be played on t his machine? Thanks again!

It will do for t he more demanding 3d games, but it should be fine for a lot of older games such as red alert . That can t really be changed as it s just what Virt ual PC emulat es.

Games t hat require more should be able t o run on your Vist a/ XP syst em anyway, some by using DOSBox if t hat really has t o be. However, t he 'real' DOS appears t o work much smoot her which is why I'm st art ing t o love Virt ualPC. Also, you can now finally t ry WindowsME wit hout dest roying your syst em!

Windows 98 VM
Thank you for providing t he MS PC Virt ual Machine and t he Windows 98 "Appliance" AND t he excellent st ep by st ep inst ruct ions. Everyt hing went well and I have it up and running. I do have a couple of quest ions if I might . 1. I would like t o increase t he memory size a bit . How would I go about t hat ? 2. I also need USB Port access. I know t hat was a bit more iffy in 98 t han in XP. Can I do t his or would I be bet t er off t o find an XP "Appliance"? 3. I also need t o have a print but I believe all I need t o do for t hat is t o simple inst all it under t he Windows 98 VM, correct ? Thanks again for helping me out . I had spend hours looking for somet hing like t his. I need t o run an old CAD applicat ion t hat is far t o expensive t o upgrade. It is running in t he Windows 98 VM. Dan

I believe on Windows Virt ual PC you can share USB port s, however t hat only works on Windows 7 and your processor needs t o support Int el Virt ualizat ion Technology or AMD-V, my processor doesn t but if yours does it should be exact ly what your aft er. I happen t o have a Windows 98 VMware image I've been using, would anyone like me t o upload t hat ? VMware performs a lit t le bet t er and works wit h some st uff Virt ual PC doesn't but also doesn't work wit h some st uff it does.

You need t o be running a 64bit version of Windows t o make any use of t he 64bit .exe, it will not work on a 32bit version of windows.

Hi Assassin, Thx for t he downloads. I have some mat hemat ical soft ware t hat I need t o run in Windows98, however I cannot t ransfer t he files int o your Windows 98 Virt ual Machine. I would appreciat e any help you can offer. My Syst em: I have a new comput er: Core i5, Win 7, 64-bit . It has a Blu-ray burner and mult iple USB port s. I have a cable int ernet connect ion. I have downloaded and inst alled Virt ual PC and Windows XP from Microsoft . I have downloaded and inst alled Windows 98 Virt ual Machine (W98VM) from Digiex. My pr oblem: I cannot add (copy, t ransfer) any files t o W98VM. 1. The drag and drop funct ion doesn't work from Win 7 t o W98VM, or vice versa. (The XP mode can see and read all my Win 7 files.) 2. I cannot connect t o t he int ernet from W98VM (because I have a cable connect ion?). 3. The W98VM doesn't recognize a CD insert ed in t he blu-ray drive. (The XP mode does recognize and read t he CD.) 4. The W98VM cannot even see t he USB drives, let alone any USB st icks I put in t hem. (The XP mode does recognize and read t he USB st icks.) If I am in "W98VM - Windows Virt ual PC" and I click "Tools | Upgrade Int egrat ion Component s", I get t he error message "The D:\ SETUP.EXE file expect s a newer version of Windows. Weird, I also have Windows 7 and dragging and dropping works for me. It 's also st range you can't connect t o t he int ernet because t hat also works fine for me (also have a cable connect ion). I don't really underst and t he last part but I t hink t he set up.exe doesn't work under Windows 98 and needs XP or higher. Why exact ly can't you drag and drop? Do you get an error or...? Also what 's t he error when you t ry t o open t he int ernet ? Did you t ry clicking t he digiex short cut on t he deskt op? Does t hat work?

Maybe you should t ry reinst alling t he whole virt ual drive soft ware and t he virt ual drive it self and t ry again.

This was creat ed before Windows VPC even exist ed, I can confirm everyt hing works perfect ly on Windows 7 wit h Virt ual PC 2007 wit hout Windows Virt ual PC inst alled. Here is an example of t he net work set t ings I have in an XP VM, t he net work adapt er on t he Virt ual PC is set t o t he one my PC uses for it s int ernet access.

Have a look at Windows XP Mode, it works wit h Windows Virt ual PC and allows applicat ions running in t he virt ual machine t o appear on your Windows 7 dekt op just like t hey were running on Windows 7.

Thanks for t his, made quick work of get t ing W98 VM inst alled. Couple t hings I keep observing t hough, t he VM will not st art or rest art on t he first at t empt , I go t hrough a process of Turn Off, Turn On, Scan Disk, t hen it works. Also, Diablo 2 and Expansion inst alled, will not launch. Vid Test suggest s t he direct draw 2d set t ing, which is fine for t his. Anyone t ried t his game under t his VM? Here's my syst em: Windows 7 64 bit , AMD Phenom II, 4GB RAM, 2x640GB WD mirror. Inst alled lat est host W VPC (not VPC 2007), used provided Win98 archive. appreciat e it PS: Det ermined t hat launching D2 was somet hing relat ed t o det ect ing t he CD drive, once I inst alled IE6, and t he D2 pat ches, which now D2 does not require Play CD in drive, it launched fine. However, game runs wit h st range art ifact s popping up disappearing on screen, and t hen t he game crashed wit h some vmsound blue screen error. My configurat ion wit h Windows VPC just does not seem st able at all. Will t ry t o remove t he Int egrat ion pieces as t hat is probably what is not support ed when using Win 98 as WVPC is only support ed wit h XP and up.

Hello! I've been looking all over for one of t hese, t hanks for post ing it ! I have an issue t hough. I got t his t o play an old game I have on CD. It mount ed fine, and when I went t o double click t he Set up.exe, it gave me an error: "Set up.exe is not a valid Win32 applicat ion". I have Vist a 64bit , and I had t ried inst alling t he game on t here first , but it didn't like any of t he compat ibilit y modes. =( This game used t o work perfect ly for me on Windows 2000 and ME, despit e being from 1995, so I have no idea what 's up. Any advice?

I appreciat e t his but t he 64 bit version isn't unpacking. I get t he following error: Ext ract ing Windows 98.vmc OK Ext ract ing Windows 98 Hard Disk.vhd Error: CRC mismat ch in file "Windows 98 Hard Disk.vhd" in t he archive "C:\ Downloads\ VM\ win98.rar" When unpacking set up64.rar I get t he message: Ext ract ing set up64.exe Error: CRC mismat ch in file "set up64.exe" in t he archive "C:\ Downloads\ VM\ set up64.rar" But it appears t o have unpacked successfully, however when I t ry t o run t he execut able I get an error message t hat it 's a 16-bit program which is incompat ible wit h t he 64-bit OS. I'm running Windows 7 Home 64 bit and ext ract ing using Winzip 14.0 Pro. Any help would be great ly appreciat ed as my only alt ernat ive is t o t ry t o find a funct ional disk wit h Win98 and t rying t o revive my old pent ium pro.

Hi, I got t his VHD t o work on Virt ual PC, but wit h a small problem. Whenever I t ry t o t ype a cert ain few keys, t hey come up as ot her random numbers and such. Those keys being "i, j, k, l, m, o, p, and u". Any way t o fix t his?

backup number funct ions when Num Lock is act ivat ed? I am having a problem get t ing my physical CD drive t o mesh wit h t he virt ual one. I inst alled Lego Creat or just fine by "Use Physical Drive E:" but now when I t ry t o run t he program (wit h t he disc in t he drive, det ect ed as Creat or (D in t he virt ual My Comput er) it says t hat t he disc is not in t he drive. Hello First t ime here Was wondering if by inst alling Windows 98 Virt ual, t here is any way t o get a screen resolut ion of 640 x 480 if your comput er doesn't go t hat low. Trying t o get a full screen on an older game t hat needs 640 x 480. I guess I'm kind of doubt ing it , but wondered if t here is any way t o get an older game t o go full screen if it needs 640 x 480. Thanks

When inst alling t he Virt ual PC, a message comes up saying t hat it 's not compat ible wit h my PC and t o check t he help sect ion. Regardless, I t ried inst alling everyt hing and it works. Everyt hing works fine, except t hat t he games I boot now have really fuzzy sound. It sounds like half t he music file is missing when I play games on t he virt ual windows 98... I checked t he help file, but saw not hing. I am running Windows XP. Can you help?

My issue is t hat when i press st art a pop up window appears saying t hat t he virt ual disk could no be locat ed and t hat i need t o specify a new virt ual hard disk. Hey I saw in an early post you showing how t o change t he ram allocat ion for t he VM on windows 98, alt hough for me t he bar is greyed out as well as t he field imput . I'm running it as an administ rat or (i t hink) so I don't know why I cannot change t his. I definit ely need t o increase it t hough, as it keeps crashing when I open up any major applicat ions. Bt w, I should probably say t hanks for t he great download worked easy peasy mac 'n cheesy, and has saved me a lot of t ime get t ing it all organized myself, not t o ment ion saved me t he t rouble of finding a bazillion pat ches, and updat es nonsuch for old games in t he longrun of not having a VM (and eliminat ed my need for dosbox almost ent irely) Thanks again ^_^

Some old games used a 16bit inst aller t hat will simply not work under 64 bit version of windows

I got t he VM up and running and t he reason for doing t his was t o play Mast er of Orion. However aft er put t he files for t he game in t he proper direct ory which should replace t he inst all st ep I believe . . . when I t ry t o run t he game it just freezes up t he VM and I have t o reset it . I got it working last night but now no dice. I t ired t o bring it up in dosbox but now bringing up dosbox seems t o crash t he vm. I t ired clicking on t he exe file from in windows and t ried t o key it in from dos and I get t he same result . When I t ry t o f8 t he st art up and go st raight t o a command prompt and st art it from t here I get an error saying you need 1024k of expanded memory. I t ired t o adjust t he memory of t he vm as shown above but I don't have enough ram available for t he vm. Any helpful t hought s and solut ions would be much appreciat ed.

helppp!!! i've just inst alled t his brilliant creat ion aft er t rying t o play silver on my xp for days, downloading all sort s of st uff, and t he game runs fine in t he virt ual pc but t he mouse calibrat ion's complet ely off so you can't click on anyt hing! I t hink it might be t o do wit h live resolut ion swit ching being disabled, is t here a workaround for t his? I can't find anyt hing anywhere. Thank you so much

hey, i just made an account for t his, all because i need t o get d3d working on win98SE for your virt ual machine, i can get it t o work t hus far, however, i cant click on opt ions(have t o do some click-ent er combo...bit wierd) and when i st art an act ual mission and it s on t he loading screen, it says "cannot load d3d" or somet hing...sorry if im not specific, oh i almost forgot , i am current ly running t his on windows XP proffessional, however, st at es it is not compat ible wit h my syst em, and is only compat ible wit h 2000 and XP pro(makes no sense, right ?)

Virt ual PC does not really emulat e a very powerful graphics card, t hat s likely why it doesn't work. VM Ware apparent ly has much bet t er 3d accelerat ion performance, t hat might be somet hing t o t ry: 3D accelerat ion in virt ual machines - Part 1: VMware & Direct X - Tut orial
