FOREWORD This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Refractories Sectional Committee had been approved by the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council. Refractory mortars are covered in IS 1292 :I991 Silica mortar for laying silica bricks in furnaces and Specification for silica mortars for laying silica bricks in coke ovens is under preparation. Drying shrinkage is one plants, coke ovens, etc. of the important characteristics of refractory mortars for use in steel

Ihis standard aims at laying down a commonly accepted method for determination of drying shrinkage of refractory mortars so that users/manufacturers can come to proper understanding on this important characteristic of the refractory mortars. In reporting the result of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised).

5 PREPARATION OF TEST SPECIMEN AND METHOD OF TEST 5.1 Mortar collected according to 3.1 shall be mixed with water or fluid as recommended by the manufacturer and made into amixture of normal consistency. The mortar of normal consistency shall be put in the metallic mould ( see 4.1 > so as to obtain a sample. Five such samples shall be obtained. 5.2 The samples prepared according-to 5.1 shall be dried in air for 24 hours and then put in the oven ( see 4.2 ) whose temperature is maintained at llOf5C. After the samples have dried in oven for 6 hours, they shall be removed from the oven and allowed to cool at room temperature. 6 RESULTS 6.1 The measurements of dried and cooled samples ( see 5.2 )-shall be taken and average of 5 results shall be reported. 6.2 Drying shrinkage as percentage length shall be calculated. of original
