Prayer: Glorify Me
22 September 2013 Pastor Art Brammer, Tay Street Baptist Church http://www.taystreetbaptist.org.nz The Lords Prayer: how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. I. Jesus stated that His hour had come (John 17:1). A. This does not mean a specific hour of the day or night. B. This refers to the time He would fulfill the mission for which He came to this world. Before he was born, there was already a way and a time already determine for his death. II. Jesus asked the Father to glorify Him in His present work (John 17:1-2) A. He demands that the Father glorify Him. 1. He was not asking for God to whisk Him up to heaven. 2. He was asking for the Father to verify His claims to be the Messiah by raising Him from the dead. B. Jesus glorification leads to the Fathers glorification. 1. The Son would glorify the Father through the salvation of men. 2. The reason Jesus demands that the Father glorify Him is that in doing so, the Father would receive greater glory. III. Jesus commented on eternal life (John 17:3) A. The only way to gain this life is by knowing the true God. B. Jesus associates life with a specific activity knowing God. IV. Jesus spoke of things accomplished in the Fathers will (John 17:4) A. In doing the Fathers will, God was glorified. B. His main purpose for coming was to die on the cross, but He did many other things leading up to His death. V. Jesus asked the Father to glorify Him in the future (John 17:5) A. Glorify Me with the same glory the Father has. B. Glorify Me with His own eternal glory. We, like Jesus, must submit ourselves to the Fathers will.
