Amenorrhea

This is a gynaecological condition found in


women over 18 years of age without
menarche, or in women whose regular
menstruation has stopped for over three
months.

Differential diagnosis: Patients with
depletion of blood may suffer from gradual
retardation of menstruation and gradual
reduction of vaginal discharge until the
menstrual flow is stopped. If accompanied
by dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and
weakness of waist and knees, dryness in
mouth and throat, hotness in heart, palms
and soles, tidal fever with sweating, red
tongue, and wiry and thready pulse, it is
caused by deficiency of liver and kidney. If
accompanied by heart palpitations, mental
fatigue and physical weakness, loss of
appetite, passage of loose stool, pale
tongue, and thready and weak pulse, it is caused by deficiency of spleen and stomach..
And if accompanied by pale complexion, pathological leanness of body, pale tongue,
and thready pulse, it is caused by blood deficiency. Patients with stagnation of qi and
blood may suffer from amenorrhea, mental depression, restlessness, anger, distension
of chest and flank, distension of lower abdomen with pain, dark purple tongue with
petechiae, and deep and wiry pulse. Patients with coagulation of blood by cold
pathogens may suffer from cold body and limbs, cold and pain in lower abdomen,
white tongue coating, and deep and slow pulse. Patients with blockage of phlegm and
dampness may suffer from obesity, distress and fullness in chest and flank, mental and
physical fatigue, profuse discharge of leukorrhea, greasy tongue coating,, and rolling
pulse.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage is applied to pituitary gland (4), kidney (22),
reproductive gland (36), thyroid gland (12), coeliac plexus (20) and adrenal gland
(21) reflecting areas. The foot is held by the physician with one hand and the knuckle
of flexed first interphalangeal joint of the other index finger is used to apply massage
from the toes to heel or on the correspondent reflecting areas on foot 4-6 times (Fig.
80).

Foot acupuncture:

Meridianal acupoints: At Xiaxi (GB 43), Shuiquan (KI 5), Dadun (LR 1) and
Xingjiian (LR 2) acupoints, a reinforcing technique with moxibustion is applied to
patients with depletion of blood, and a reducing technique without moxibustion is
applied to patients with stagnation of blood. The needles are retained for 20 minutes
and the moxa cone is changed 3-5 times.

External application of drugs:

(1) Dahuang (rhubarb) 128 gm, Mangxiao (sodium sulfate) 64 gm, Chaihu (thorowax
root) 32 gm, Gualou (snakegourd root) 32 gm, Taoren (peach kernel) 32 gm, Danggui
(Chinese angelica root) 32 gm, Shengdi (rehmannia root) 32 gm, Honghua (safflower)
32 gm, Chuanshanjia (pangolin scale) 32 gm, Erzhu (zedoary tumeric) 32 gm,
Sanleng (burreed tuber) 32 gm, Chuanxiong (Szechuan lovage) 32 gm, Ruxiang
(frankincense) 22 gm, Moyao (myrrh) 22 gm, Rougui (cinnamon bark) 22 gm and
Chuanwu (aconite root) 10 gm are fried in sesame oil with Huangdan (yellow lead)
and finally mixed with Huaruishi (ophicalcite) 32 gm and Xuejie (dragon's blood) 15
gm to prepare a paste for application over the reproductive gland (36) and other
correspondent reflecting areas on foot for patients with qi and blood stagnation.
(2) The powder of Hujiao (white pepper) 9 gm, Huangdan (yellow lead) 9 gm and
Huoxiao (saltpetre) 9 gm is mixed to prepare three small cakes for application over
the reproductive gland (36) and other correspondent reflecting areas on foot for
patients with accumulation of cold and damp pathogens.
(3) Fresh Wutongpi (bark of Chinese parasol tree) 150 grn is boiled in water with
Awei (asafetida) 90 gm to prepare a paste for application over the coeliac plexus (20)
and other related reflecting areas on foot.
