Summer Reading 2013

Overview
DC Public Librarys Summer Reading program is the largest summer reading program in the District working to prevent Summer Slide, or loss in reading and comprehension skills that occurs during summer vacation. Summer Reading 2013 began on June 1st and continued through August 24th. For the first time the library included an Adult component to complement and enhance Children and Teen Summer Reading. 14,445 people registered for Summer Reading and 63,118 people attended 747 Summer Reading Programs. The library is grateful to the Federation of Friends, the DC Public Library Foundation and all of the community partners that supported Summer Reading 2013.

Themes
The theme for early readers (Ages Birth-5) was Read with Me. The theme for children (Ages 6-12) was Dig Into Reading. The theme for Teens (Ages 12-19) was Beneath the Surface. The theme for Adults (Ages 20+) was Groundbreaking Reads. Prizes were given out.

Program Highlights
Childrens Summer Reading
Science in the Summer
Science in the Summer is a fun and free science education program for elementary school children. The program series was hosted at 13 DC Public Library locations for Childrens Summer Reading in partnership with the DC Public Library Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Certified teachers led students through hands on experiments to get them excited about learning. Students learned about magnets and electricity through building a compass, an electromagnet, electrical circuits and more.

Karen O. Brown
Local Visual Artist and Arts Educator Karen O. Brown hosted a book art workshop at six DC Public Library locations for Childrens Summer Reading. The workshop taught children how to make and decorate their own notebooks with recycled materials. Once the notebooks were completed the children worked with Ms. Brown to decorate the covers. Each student was able to take their creation home to write in.

Teen Summer Reading


Albus Cavus
The international collective of artists and scientists known as Albus Cavus held 9 different workshops at 22 DC Public Library locations for Teen Summer Reading. Local artists and art educators taught teens how to create art using different mediums through workshops on stenciling, wheatpasting and poster making, science and the art of color, the urban microworld, tape sculpture, graffiti letters, bicycle design, the beauty of fractals, and science and the art of the cosmos. Each teen left with their piece of artwork and a list of books and other resources to help the teens explore more techniques through the DC Public Library collection.

Christylez Bacon and Nistha Raj


Local musicians Christylez Bacon and Nistha Raj performed at four locations for Teen Summer Reading and at both the Summer Reading Kick-Off and the Summer Reading Finale at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. Together they presented genres of music native to their cultural upbringings including hip-hop, go-go, and Hindustani Classical Music. They presented the genres separately and then played new compositions combining them to show Teens how they can use music to cross cultural boundaries.

Archaeology in the District
City Archaeologist Dr. Ruth Trocolli and her staff visited the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Library to talk about what it is like to manage archaeological sites in the District, including prehistoric and Native American sites as part of Adult Summer Reading. Dr. Trocolli talked about how the District handles archaeological finds and brought some examples of highlights including some exciting finds from a burial site in Georgetown.

Digging In: Cleaning Clutter and Resdiscovering Your Best Home and Office
Judy Tiger, personal organizing expert helped customers at six DC Public Library locations for Adult Summer Reading. Ms. Tiger shared the basics of getting and staying organized. She worked with customers to ensure that they were able to help develop their own unique style of organization based on some general organizational principles with the understanding that organization cannot last if it does not fully work for the customer.
