Common cold

The common cold is a disease caused by an attack of external pathogens, occurring in


all four seasons but more frequently in winter and spring. The clinical symptoms
include nasal obstruction, running nose, sneezing, cough, headache, chills, fever and
general discomfort. This disease can be divided into mild and heavy types: The mild
type is called the common cold, caused by current pathogens; the heavy type is called
influenza, caused by unseasonable pathogens; and the epidemic type with similar
symptoms shared by many patients and occurring in one seasonal epidemic is called
epidemic influenza.
In modern medicine, upper respiratory infection and epidemic influenza are included
as variants of this disease and can be treated by the following methods.
Applications of hand therapy:
1) Massage therapy:
Location: Thenar prominence, Hegu (LI 4), head reflective point, lung and heart
acupoint, lung area, nose and throat area. chest area, dorsal side of the third
metacarpal bone, antifebrile point and Taiyuan (LU 9).
Method of manipulation: Pinching and digit-pressing maneuvers applied at Hegu,
head point and lung and heart acupoint; pressing and kneading maneuvers at lung area,
nose and throat area and chest area; rubbing palm and dorsal side of the third
metacarpal bone; digit-pressing at antifebrile point, Taiyuan and Shangyang (LI 1) for
30-50 times at each point and area.
2) Acupuncture therapy:
(1) At regular and extra acupoints:
Location: Quchi (LI ll), Waiguan (TE 5) and Hegu (LI 4).
Method of manipulation: The needles are vertically inserted to apply medium
stimulation.
(2) At reflective point:
Location: Lung point.
Method of manipulation: The needle is vertically inserted for 1.6 cm and retained
for 15 minutes after twisting, lifting, and thrusting needling stimulation.

(3) At reflective areas:
Location: Head area and neck area of dorsal reflective areas.
Method of manipulation: The area is superficially pricked with a 3.3-cm-long
needle. The needle is not retained.

(4) At special acupoints beside the second metacarpal bone:
Location: Head acupoint and lung acupoint.
Method of manipulation: Strong stimulation is applied and the needles are retained
for 20 minutes.
3) Hand bath:

Recipe: Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) 10 g, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnomomi) l0 g, J ingjie
(Herba Schizonepetae) 15 g, Zisu (Leaf of Perilla) 15 g, Qianghuo (Radix
Notopterygii) 15 g, Huajiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli) 6 g, fresh stalks of green onion
30 g, and fresh ginger l0 g.
Function: To induce sweating by pungent and warm herbs, improve ventilation of
lungs, and relieve symptoms of exterior syndrome.
Method of manipulation: A hot decoction of these herbs is used to steam and then
wash both hands, head and face for 20-30 minutes, twice a day, for treating common
cold due to an attack of wind and cold pathogens, but not due to wind and heat
pathogens.
4) Herb-holding therapy:
Herbs: Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis) 6 g, Qianghuo (Radix Notopterygii) 10 g,
Mingfan (Alumen) 6 g and J ingjie (Herba Schizonepetae) 9 g.
Method of manipulation: A powder of these herbs is mixed with ginger juice to
prepare pills for holding in palm to slightly induce sweating, three times a day for
treating common cold due to an attack of wind and cold pathogens.
