Cough

Coughing is an important symptom of respiratory system diseases. In traditional


Chinese medicine, a cough without sputum is called ke; and the spitting of sputum
without a cough is called sou. Usually coughing and spitting sputum are present at the
same time.
In modern medicine, the cough is included as part of respiratory diseases such as
acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and pneumonia and can be treated by the
following methods.
Applications of hand therapy:
Massage therapy:

Location: Taiyuan (LU 9), Yuji (LU 10), Shaofu (HT 8), lung reflective point,
cough-controlling point, Shaoshang (LU 11 ), Hegu (LI 4), Sifeng (EX-UE 10), nose
and throat area, lung area and thenar prominence.
Method of manipulation: Digit-pressing and kneading maneuvers applied at Taiyuan
(LU 9), Yuji (LU 10), Shaofu (HT 8), lung point, Shaoshang (LUll) and Hegu (LI 4);
pinching maneuver at Sifeng (EX-UE-10); and pressing and grinding maneuvers at
nose and throat area, lung area and thenar prominence. Body warmth should be
maintained, and the pressing and kneading maneuvers should be applied to the deep
part of the hand, and the rubbing and grinding maneuvers should heat and redden the
skin.
Acupuncture therapy:
At regular and extra acupoints:
Location: Lieque (LU 7) and Chize (LU 5).
Method of manipulation: The medium needling stimulation is applied and the needles
are retained for 30 minutes.
At reflective points:
Location: Cough and asthma point and lung point.
Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 1.6 cm in depth and retained for
five minutes after twisting, lifting, and thrusting stimulation.
At reflective area:
Location: Lung area in palmar reflective areas.
Method of manipulation: The needle is shallowly inserted and removed after lifting
and thrusting stimulation.
At special acupoint beside the second metacarpal bone:
Location: Lung acupoint.
Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 30
minutes.

Hand bath:
For cough caused by wind cold pathogens:

Recipe: Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) 15 g, Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 15
g, Zisu (Leaf of Perilla) 30 g, Baibu (Radix Stemonae) 20 g, Qianhu (Radix
Peucedani Cirrhosae) 15 g, and fresh ginger 10 g.
Function: To relieve symptoms of exterior syndrome, improve ventilation of lung, and
control cough.
Method of manipulation: A hot decoction of these herbs is used to steam and then
wash both hands for 20-30 minutes, twice a day.
Cough due to internal injury:
Recipe: Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 20 g, Baibu (Radix Stemonae) 20 g,
Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) 20 g, Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae) 20 g, Danggui
(Chinese angelica) 30 g, J iegeng (Radix Platycodi) 30 g and Gancao (Licorice root)
10g.
Function: To improve body resistance, tone the body, resolve phlegm and control
cough.
Method of manipulation: Same as above recipe.
