INSTRUCTION MANUAL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BOURDONS TUBE PRESSURE GAUGE Aim :- Measurement of pressure by using Bourdon's tube pressure gauge.

Prior Concept: Definition of pressure, units of pressure, Types of pressure, generalized measurement system. New Concepts: Pressure measuring devices are of three types. A. Gravitational (eg. Manometers, Piezometer etc.), B. Direct acting type (eg. Diaphragm pressure gauge, bellows pressure gauge) C. Indirect acting electrical type (eg. Strain gauge) Pressure Measuring Devices ___________________________________________________________________________ _______________ Gravitational Direct Acting Type using Indirect acting Type Eg.Manometer diaphragm below Eg.Strain Gauge Learning Objectives: 1 Able to know different pressure measuring instruments. 2 Able to know working principle. 3 Able to analyze working principle from the point of view of generalized measurement system. 4 Able to know differences between pressure measuring instruments. 5 Able to select appropriate pressure measuring instrument for appropriate application. 6Ability to observe and measure the pressure of various systems by above instruments.

Apparatus: i) Bourdon's Pressure Gauge. Capacity - 1 to 10 bar, least count - 0.5 bar (kg/cm2) ii) System of which pressure has to be measured iii) Air cylinder

Exploded view of Bourdon's Pressure Gauge

Theory:Bourdon's tube is normally oval in cross section. It is coiled into circular arc (generally included angle is less than 360). As pressure is applied to tube, oval section tends to round out, becoming more circular in cross section. Inner and outer lengths will be approximately equal to original lengths; hence only recourse for the tube is uncoil. Movement of free end of tube is magnified through linkages and gearing. Bourdon's pressure gauge operates on the principle that deflection or deformation due to elastic force is used as measure of pressure. Procedure: 1) Locate the position in the system of which pressure has to be measured. 2) Connect Bourdon's pressure Gauge with air regulator. 3) Keep air regulator knob fully anticlockwise so as to have zero pressure in the Bourdon's tube. 4) Develop the pressure in air cylinder / vessel. 5) By slowly turning the knob of air regulator clockwise, increase the pressure applied to Bourdon's tube in proper steps.

6) Note the angular position of the pointer attached to the mechanical amplifier system Driven by free end of Bourdon's tube for different pressure input to the tube. 7) Note down the reading on pressure gauge also by turning the knob of air regulator each time.
