Theres a saying that all knitting is made up of just two stitches: the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Thats true . . . sort of.

Many of my favorite knitted items are made up of different stitch patterns, patterns that use knits, purls, yarnovers, increases, decreases, cable stitches and traveling stitches. These stitches can be combined to make all kinds of different visuals, from easy knit and purl stitch patterns to the most complicated lace. Ive gathered some of my favorite stitch patterns here for you. All of these stitches were taken from the Harmony Guides series of stitch pattern books, edited by Erika Knight. You can use them on scarves, shawls, dishcloths, mittens, and wherever else you need a beautiful stitch pattern. Have fun,
