Asian Film Festival of Dallas
If you’re a film buff and a fan of Asian culture, you just got
lucky! The Asian Film Festival of Dallas is inviting you to
join them for a week of Asian films and culture in late July
2009. The interesting thing about AFFD is that it’s open to
the public. When looking at other high-profile film exhibi-
tions, such as the ones that occur annually in Toronto and
Cannes, it’s clear that public satisfaction is not really a prior-
ity. However, with the AFFD, the public has right of way!
This is a venue to highlight promising Asian filmmakers and
their masterpieces directly to the community at large. No
pretentious ‘VIP only’ screenings will dominate this celebra-
tion of the Asian culture and heritage. For those of you who
are strict Indian film lovers, an Indo-Swiss production, ‘Tan-
doori Love’, starring Vijay Raaz from Monsoon Wedding,
will have its first Dallas screening at the event. If you’re
looking to attend, please visit www.AFFD.org

New York over takes
by Ali Fazal
After an agonizing dry period of about three months, this Bollywood fa-
natic is happy to report that the drought is over! With the nasty producer
vs. multiplex battle over, so are the delays in films, and as cinemagoers,
we will be treated with biggies every weekend from here till the end of
the year! However, it is highly doubtful that any biggie will even come
close to matching the buzz surrounding the new Yashraj production,
New York. With a sizzling hot star cast, a controversial subject matter,
and some behind-the-scenes tales that will make you cringe, it looks like
New York is definitely a movie that is not to be missed!

24 Salaam Namaste magazine | JULY 2009

In January of 2008, film mogul Yash Cho-
pra suddenly felt inspired after seeing some
gruesome coverage of war prisoners on TV. “I
suddenly had the thought, what if someone
I love was taken into custody just because of
their race, or their religion?” After this epiph-
any, Chopra immediately consulted with his
team, and ultimately decided on Kabir Khan,
director of Kabul Express, to spearhead this
massive project. “It’s a very different kind of
movie for Yashraj. It’s not all dancing around
trees, there’s some serious content here,”
Khan explains. “I’m glad they chose me to
put all these pieces together.”
After finding a director and com-
missioning a first-class screenplay, the next
move of production was to find a suitable star
cast. “We really wanted a fresh group of kids,”
Khan explains. “Shahrukh and Saif are great,
but we really needed people who could look
like college kids.” The first to sign on the dot-
ted line was John Abraham, playing lovable
jock Samir. Since John and Kabir Khan had
already worked together in Kabul Express,
the vibe was already there between them. The
next challenge was to find a suitable actor to
play the film’s other leading man. “We needed
someone who was a polar opposite to John,
but just as appealing. In that, we found Neil,”
Khan explains. Neil Nitin Mukesh, hot off
his unconventional debut in Johnny Gadaar,
was finalized to play Omar, a serious and sen-
sitive college student, in the film.
At this point, 2 pieces of the puzzle
were complete. All the team needed to get the
ball rolling was a suitable female lead. “The
heroine, Maya, is a very complex character,
and we needed someone who could believ-
ably play a girl who has lived in America for
years.” Khan explains. “Most actresses we test-
ed didn’t have the right energy… We had all
but given up until Katrina became available.”
Scorching supermodel Katrina Kaif had long
been thought of for the female lead. Howev-
er, with her busy schedule, she was unable to
find time to audition, let alone shoot the film.
Production went crazy, testing other actresses
like Sonam Kapoor, Shamita Shetty, and Lara
Dutta. However, when an unexpected vacancy
appeared in Katrina Kaif’s schedule, she was
immediately penciled in to play Maya. With
this fresh, young trifecta of actors in place,
shooting was ready to begin. >>

With the plot based in New York City, production knew they
would have an amazing time making the film. What they
didn’t know was that this journey would be one of the longest
and most arduous that any film technicians have ever had to
deal with. The film ended up shooting for 100 days in New
York, longer than any Hindi production EVER. With this
marathon shooting schedule though, it became easier for the
cast to bond. One of the most reported about incidents from
the shooting of the film came when a local American techni-
cian invited the entire cast and crew from the film to join him
at a local NYC club for a party. While the technicians, all
riding together, had no problem getting into the venue, the
three cast members, who had ridden separately, were denied
entry due to lack of identification. Despite all the pleading
and prodding from the crew members inside, bounders sim-
ply refused to believe that these three were film stars from
India. While they ended up getting in eventually, this kind of
frantic incident certainly set the tone for the totally crazy set
of the film.
Because they were shooting in New York City itself,
there were literally times when the cast had to shoot their
scenes surrounded by real life New Yorkers, who had no idea
that a movie was shooting, and literally didn’t care. Kabir
Khan reminisces, “One time, I remember we were shooting
a light scene with John, Katrina, and Neil on the sidewalk,
and a pushy New York woman walked into the frame, yelling
at her friend on her cell phone. We told her we were filming
a movie, but she could care less. That’s the kind of attitude I
love from New Yorkers. It defines the lifestyle.”
All in all, this terrorism-based thriller simply set the
bar for Hindi films from here on out. With a scorching hot
starcast, hummable music, and enough drama behind the
scenes and on screen to fill an entire encyclopedia, one thing
is for sure: New York is not to be missed.

Men’s Quiz: What kind of guy are you?
1. One of your buddies invites you over to his house for dinner to meet his new girlfriend. You wear:
a. A black three-piece suit. You want to look sleek and sophisticated to make a good impression on your future ‘sister-in-law’
b. A graphic tee and jeans. You don’t want to look like a dweeb by dressing up too much, and you want to show your friend’s
new gal that she can be comfortable around you.
c. A pair of dark-washed jeans with a button down. You want to look polished enough so that you make a statement, but don’t
want to be in ‘overdressed’ territory.

2. A bunch of friends invite you on a camping trip to a forest-area for the weekend. Upon accepting, you fill your over-
night bag with:
a. A bunch of worn out cotton tees and sweat-
pants—After all, if you’re going to get dirty in
the forest, why take nice clothes?
b. Some camping attire that you specifically
purchased from a sporting goods store for
the occasion. Hey, when else are you going to
be able to wear camouflage print and combat
boots right?
c. Slacks and dress shirts for the whole trip.
Just because you’re in the forest doesn’t mean
you have to look like a caveman for the whole
weekend.

3. You get asked by your boss to go to din-

ner at a local casual restaurant. You decide to
wear:
a. A suit that you would normally wear to work.
You want him to think that you were dedicat-
edly working hard until right before the dinner
b. Casual clothes. It’s a casual joint after all, and maybe if your boss sees you out of your work garb, he’ll start to get to know
you better as a person.
c. Clothes that you can go out clubbing in afterwards. If you have to endure this painful dinner with your boss, you’ll need a
partying night out after.

b. Place an order for 2 dozen red roses. After all, nothing says true love like flowers. Plus, you don’t even have to wrap them.
c. Buy her a gift-card to her favorite store. You want her to have a gift she’ll love, but have no idea how to pick it out yourself

Dear Didi... The sassy soul sister you WISH you had...

Dear Didi,
I am freaking out! My boyfriend of four years is doing a study abroad program in
Europe next semester, and I don’t know what to do. On the outside, I have to be
the ‘supportive girlfriend’ and pretend that I am super excited for him. However, I
am going crazy for two reasons. First, I’m afraid of the toll the whole long distance
thing will take on our relationship, and second, one of his female friends who I’m
sure has a thing for him is also going. Should I tell him the truth and ask him not
to go? Should I break it off and tell him that we’ll pick up when he gets back? I

Men’s Quiz:
What kind of guy are you? RESULTS
Continued from page 32
5-8 points: You’re a super chill, laid-back sort of
guy! You don’t believe in showing lots of emotion unnecessarily, and
you call a spade a spade. You don’t over think situations and you believe
in doing the right thing—always. You may not be super lovey-dovey or
attentive all the time, but you are definitely stable and strong, two of the
qualities that women look for most!

9-12 points: You’re a fun, upbeat guy! You think life is for
the living and that you might as well enjoy it while you can. You are al-
ways there for your friends and family, but don’t feel like getting bogged
down with extra responsibilities you don’t need. You wear your heart
on your sleeve and enjoy taking unconventional routes to success. You
know how to make a woman laugh, which is key in any relationship!

13-15 points: You’re a cool, suave, and sophisticated

guy! You are totally put together at all times and people envy you
because of your polish. You believe in doing whatever needs to be done
to have the best possible outcome in any situation, and extravagance is
always part of your plan. While you may not always be able to lay back
and enjoy a situation, you are calm and collected by nature, which is
something women always desire!

Top 5 iPhone Applications
Tap Tap Coldplay
Continuing their placement on my top 10 lists, Tap Tap came out with
yet another iteration: Tap Tap Coldplay. Just like with all of their previous
games, Tapulous has created an amazing rhythmic music game where all
you do is tap your iPhone screen in time with the music. While this might
sound stupid and boring, it actually is quite entertaining and enjoyable.
This time, however, instead of featuring various bands, Tap Tap Coldplay
only plays Coldplay music, which is something I love. Take it from me,
a Coldplay fan, all other fans of the band will love this application. At
$4.99, Tap Tap Coldplay will give you plenty of playtime and amusement.

CIA World Factbook

Do you want to know what the flag of Scotland really looks like? What
about the size of the military of Israel (remember, they ‘don’t have
nukes’)? No matter what you want to find out, if it is public record, then
the CIA World Factbook will have it. The Factbook has been published
since 1962, but it didn’t go online until the early 2000s. Now, finally, the
Factbook has made yet another leap -- it has made it to the portable
phone market. Using your iPhone or iPod Touch, you can explore the
entire world, learn thousands of new things, and answer all of your quiz
questions. At only $.99, there is no reason not to grab a copy of CIA
World Factbook today.

Doc Scanner
For most months, Doc Scanner would probably be the best application
of that month; for April, however, it was beaten by two better applica-
tions. Don’t get me wrong, this application is still amazing and highly
usable. Grab your iPhone, take a picture, and you can scan it into a PDF
document. It is really that simple, and really that useful. You can use Doc
Scanner to scan anything, send it into work, or use it to ‘fax’ a contract to
your partner. Even more, the application will crop and isolate the image
for you, so you have no work to do. At $9.99, Doc Scanner might be a bit
expensive, but it is worth it. iPhreakz!!

These portions are MASSIVE. I don’t
mean slightly bigger than normal.
I mean big enough to eat one third
now as a filling meal, and take the rest
home to enjoy for the rest of the week!
Luckily, Spice n’ Rice had to go boxes,
because there was now way I would
be able to finish this off in one sitting.
Just the variety of food floored me. I
tried everything from snacky items like
Samosas and Chicken Patties to more
savory fare like Goat Biryani and Chick-
en Tandoori. Seafood lovers will adore
their fish cutlets, and I had two helpings
of their lassi, which was extremely tasty.

Just as I was leaving, with my hefty dog-

gie-bag in hand, I realized what a unique
and special place Spice n’ Rice Indian
Tiffin is. It’s a place where people can
recapture their youth in India with that
typical canteen atmosphere. It’s a place
where, in this economic downturn,
people can get huge portions of tasty
food at reasonable prices. It’s a place
where you can take the whole family
without being shushed by waiters or
bothered by hostesses. All in all, there’s
only one thing I know for certain: It’s a
place that I will be frequenting a LOT For a full video review and tour of
from now on. Spice n’ Rice Indian tiffin, check out
