Chapter 1 Overview

Based on the IS-2000 protocol and CDMA technology, HUAWEI ETS1000 Series
Fixed Wireless Terminals have the following features:

 Clear conversation, low call drop, high secrecy, low radiation, environmental
health, etc.
 In remote areas of sparse population, compared with the cable access system,
the wireless access system only needs less investment so that network
operators can take back their cost in shorter time.
 HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Fixed Wireless Terminals support multiple
interfaces, through which users can connect external devices with the terminal,
thus providing subscribers with high-quality voice service, high-speed packet
data service, circuit data service, digital fax, G3 analog fax, wireless public
telephone service, etc. Such rich service functions not only meet the demands
of subscribers, but also effectively increase the ARPU of operators.
 HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Fixed Wireless Terminals are easy and flexible to
install, so they are applicable to the areas where a cable access system has
difficulty in configuration or variable locations. For example, you can easily add
office telephones in various temporary locations (such as large building site,
large sports match and emergency and crisis dealing sites), or assemble them
on mobile cars or ships for use as business or private telephones.

At present, HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Fixed Wireless Terminals involves three

series and six models of products. Table 1-1 describes the three series and
corresponding models.

2.1 Main Features

 Wide coverage

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals are equipped with standard TNC
antenna interfaces, through which an outdoor/indoor antenna can be connected
with the terminal. In remote or poor-signal-quality areas, you can choose an
outdoor antenna to improve the coverage of the terminal. Especially, ETS1000
(450MHz) Series terminals operate at 450MHz, so they provide more wide
coverage.

 High-quality voice

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals adopt highly-effective voice codec

technologies (such as 8k EVRC and 8k/13k QCELP) to provide the high-quality
voice access.

 High-availability data services

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals can provide packet data services
with a maximum rate of 153.6kbps/38.4kbps (Downlink/Uplink) and circuit data
services with a maximum rate of 14.4kbps.

 High-availability fax services

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals support PC digital fax services. In

addition, ETS1001/ ETS1201/ETS1501 terminals support G3 analog fax services.

 Wireless public telephone services

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals offer charging interfaces, through

which a charging meter can be connected with the terminal to implement the
attended public telephone service. At present, the terminals support three charging

 Rich interfaces

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals offer two RJ11 interfaces in parallel,
through which you can connect a telephone, fax machine or charging meter. The
terminals offer one serial data interface to support packet data services and circuit
data services, and this interface can also be used for the normal maintenance and
software version upgrade of the terminal. In addition, the terminals offer a standard
TNC interface, through which an outdoor/indoor antenna can be connected.

 Easy maintenance

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals provide a maintenance tool. You can
flexibly configure equipment parameters through the serial data interface on the
terminal.

2.2 Main Services

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals provide the following services:

 High-quality voice service, supporting 8k EVRC and 8k/13k QCELP voice

codec technology.
 Supporting emergency call service.
 Supporting multiple supplementary services: calling number identification
presentation, call transfer, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold and three-way
services.
 Supporting packet data service, maximum transfer rate is 153.6kbps/38.4kbps
(Downlink/Uplink).
 Supporting circuit data service, maximum transfer rate is 14.4kbps.

4.1 Common Voice Application

The common voice application is the most primary application of HUAWEI

ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals. Figure 4-1 shows the connection relation
between a terminal and a common telephone.

As shown in Figure 4-1, the telephone is connected to the POTS interface of the
terminal with an RJ11 cable. The POTS interface supplies power to the telephone
and provides the functions such as ringing and dial tone. This connection mode can
implement not only the application of common voice, but also the settings of the
terminal such as volume, operation mode and parameters. For the detailed

4.2 Attended Public Telephone Application

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals provide charging interfaces, so you

can connect a charging meter with the terminal to implement the attended public
telephone service. Figure 4-2 shows their connection relation.

At present, HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals support the following

charging interface standards: polarity reversal, 12KC and 16KC.

4.3 Wide coverage Application

Sometimes, the wireless access system needs to be applied to vast and sparsely
populated areas. In this case, the coverage of wireless networks is expected more
extensive as much as possible. HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals are
designed with the advanced antenna-feeder lightning protection, so a high gain
outdoor antenna can be connected with them to further increase the coverage.
Since the outdoor antenna and indoor antenna share an interface, it is easy to
replace it. If the outdoor directional antenna is adopted, you need to adjust the

direction of the antenna in installation to ensure the strongest signal received (you
can determine the direction in which the strongest signal can be received by

4.4 Data Service Application

HUAWEI ETS1000 Series Wireless Terminals provide multiple data service access
modes: circuit-switched domain data service and packet-switched domain data
service through the serial data interface. Figure 4-4 shows the connection relation
between the terminal and the PC.

Packet-switched data services can be implemented in the following way: first you
need to install the dedicated USB driver of the terminal and the relevant Modem
driver on the PC, then dial the access number “#777”. For circuit-switched data
services, different service classes have different implementation modes. For the

4.5 Fax Application

HUAWEI ETS1001/ETS1201/ETS1501 terminals can be connected with a G3 fax

network status, consult the operator). If the terminal is placed away from the base
station or in the location with severe indoor shielding, please choose the outdoor
antenna. If the terminal is placed near the base station or in the location where the
signal can be received easily, you can choose the indoor antenna. You can
determine the signal strength by observing the received signal strength indicator on
the host panel.

In addition, in choosing the outdoor antenna, if there is a visible channel between

the local and the base station antenna, it is recommended that you choose the
outdoor directional antenna. Otherwise, you should choose the outdoor omni
antenna. The outdoor directional antenna has the directionality, so you need to
adjust the antenna to obtain the strongest signal in installation.

5.3 Purchase of Terminals Supporting Fax Function

Following takes the ETS1200/ETS1201 terminals as an example. The ETS1201

terminal implements the analog fax function by adding a fax module to the
ETS1200 terminal. Therefore, the two terminals have the same functions except the
analog fax function. Since the fax module of the ETS1201 terminal is installed on
the terminal before delivery, you can not implement the analog fax function of the
ETS1200 terminal only by purchasing the fax module and adding it to the terminal.
Generally, before purchasing the terminals, you should consult the local operator or
sales representative to determine the approximate proportion between the
terminals supporting and not supporting the fax function. Then you determine the
purchase quantity of ETS1200 and ETS1201 terminals. For ETS1000/ETS1001
and ETS1500/ETS1501 terminals, you should adopt the same purchase principle.

5.4 Select of Product Features

Before purchasing a certain type of terminal, user should confirm the detailed
features. There are mainly two features of ETS1000 terminals for selection: sub-
band and UIM card installation method.

 Sub-band

Sub-band selection mainly intends to ETS1000 (450MHz) series terminals. Now

two types of terminals are available for supporting BLOCK A sub-band and BLOCK
C sub-band of 450MHZ band respectively. The sub-band information are shown in
Table 2-1.

 UIM card installation method

There are mainly two kinds of installation methods: ROM-SIM (terminal and card
integrated) and R-UIM (terminal and card separated).
