Next, their performance

teenagers also tend to get
into relationships at a young age. They get emotionally involved and are unable to think rationally,
which sometimes causes other complications in life. Peer pressure is another factor. Teens might get
easily influenced by
14
friends. These friends may not be good role models for them to follow
and hence, they may get involved in social ills.
On the whole, teenage blues are anormal and common
15 among youngsters. Parental
guidance and adult supervision are crucial in helping to overcome their blues.

Questions
26 - 3l are based on thefollowing passage.
I
Obesity is the heavy accumulation of fat in your body and it occurs when
your body consumes more calories than it burns. Statistics by World Health
Organization (WHO)
have indicated that obesity is the fifth leading risk for global
deaths. At least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or
obese. Psychologically,
being overweight can affect your
body image and
damage self-esteem. In some cases, this can cause social anxiety and depression.
2 Obesity can occur at any age and there are many factors that cause this
phenomenon.
The main cause of obesity is the unhealthy eating habits and
unhealthy food choices that we make. Globally, there has been an increased intake
of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars but low in vitamins,
minerals and other nutrients. Processed or fast foods that are high in fat and refined
carbohydrates, laden with calories, are favoured over fruits, vegetables and
unrefined carbohydrates, such as whole meal bread and brown rice. Modern diet
habits that encourage consumption of
junk
and fatty foods have caused more fat to
be stored in the body, hence, causing obesity.
3
A decrease in physical activity due to the increasingly inactive nature of
many forms of chores is another contributing factor. With the arrival of
televisions, computers, video games, remote controls, washing machines, dish
washers and other modern conveniences, the majority of people are leading a
much more sedentary lifestyle compared to their parents and grandparents.
Many
people have
jobs
that involve sittin g at a desk for most of the day, and rely heavily
on their cars to get around. When it is time to relax, people tend to watch
television, or play computer games, and rarely do any regular exercise. This lack
of activity reduces metabolic reaction necessary to burn accumulated fat, and this
causes the extra calories to be stored as fat instead, resulting in obesity.
4
The modern day lifestyle and affluence have widened food options and
changed eating habits. Groceries and supermarkets stock their shelves with a
greater selection of foods. Processed foods and soft drinks which are high in
calories, from fat or sugar, are more accessible. It is also becoming a trend, as
more restaurants extend their business hours to late night or opened for 24 hours,
thus, encouraging late night suppers. People may also be eating more during a
meal or snack because of larger portion sizes. The increasing number of
restaurants and food outlets may encourage people to eat too much especially
during outings with friends or relatives. All of these unhealthy eating practices
which have become a part of modern day lifestyle, have resulted in excessive
energy intake.

Obesity can be hereditary, as some people tend to stay the same weight for
years without much effort, whereas others find they put on weight quickly if they
are not careful about what they eat. This could be due to your genes because some
genetic
conditions can affect appetite, determine how much fat your body stores, 40
the rate at which
'you
burn energy and how the body stores fat. Thesq genetic
factors simply alter your eating or energy burning habits.
Obesity is also promoted
by deep set psychological
and emotional factors,
such as distressing events that could include childhood abuse, loss of a loved one
or marital and other family problems.
Emotional stress, anxiety, illnesses or 45
chronic pain can lead to depression and overeating. Some people eat as a way to
comfort and calm themselves, to avoid dealing with unpleasant tasks or situations.
Such traumatic incidents can contribute to overeating which is easy in our culfure
today because of the availability of a variety of food.
Obesity is a serious problem prevalent in our modern society and steps need 50
to be taken to overcome this social problem. According to The World Health
Organization (WHO),
approximately 1.6 billion adults were overweight and at
least 400 million adults were obese in 2005. If steps are not taken to reduce the
numbers, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700
million will be obese by 2015.
