Principle of Operation
General The closed cooling circuit, which is slightly pressurized, is filled with a mixture of water and glycol, to which corrosion protectives have been added. The volume flow ratio between the generator coolers and the lube oil cooler is set using shut-off flaps MKP10 AA056 and AA100. The volume flow ratio between the generator coolers is set by adjusting shutoff flaps MKP10 AA007, AA009, AA011 and AA013. Shut-off flaps MKP10 AA030 and AA031, MKP10 AA032 and AA033, installed in the lines before and after coolers MKA10 AC001 and AC002, isolate each cooler from the cooling system. Shut-off flaps MKP10 AA021 and AA014, installed in the lines before and after the circulating pumps are used to isolate them from the cooling system. Vent valves MKP10 AA045 and AA046 are used for cooler deaeration. Drain valves MKP10 AA091 and AA093 are used for draining the cooler. Shut-off flaps MKP10 AA006 and AA007, MKP10 AA008 and AA009, MKP10 AA010 and AA011, MKP10 AA012 and AA013, installed in the lines before and after generator coolers MKA13 AC100, AC200, AC300, and AC400, isolate each generator cooler from the cooling system. Ventilation valves MKP10 AA018, AA037, AA038, AA042 and AA061 are used for system deaeration. Drain valves MKP10 AA201, AA202, AA203, AA204, AA241 and AA242 are used for drainage of the coolers. Valve MKP10 AA203 is also used to drain the lube oil cooler (water end). Pressure accumulator MKP10 BB001 compensates for volumetric expansion of the coolant. Manually operated pump MKP10 AP002, in conjunction with valves MKP10 AA002, AA002, AA003, AA004 and AA005, makes it possible to drain or to fill and build up pressure within the system. Start-Up, Operation, Shut-Down One of the two circulating pumps MKF10 AP001 or AP003 starts and maintains circulation in the system; the other one is on standby. If the pressure across the pumps drops below the set level (i.e. the pump in operation fails), the standby pump is started immediately. Control valve MKP10 DT001 controls the cooling water temperature.

The heat losses produced in the generator are dissipated into cooling water in generator coolers MKA13 AC100, AC200, AC300, and AC400. The heat losses transferred into the lube oil at the points being lubricated and cooled, are transferred into the cooling water in lube oil cooler MBV21 AC010. The heat losses are transferred to the cooling water and carried away in the cooling water system MKP10. The heat is then transferred to the environement via coolers MKP10 AC001 and AC002 (water/air heat exchangers) which use ambient air drawn in by fans.

MKA13 CT026: Measurement of the inlet cooling air temperature, non-drive end The measurement monitors the inlet temperature of the cold cooling air at non-drive end of the generator and displays it in the control room. If the temperature exceeds the preset level an alarm is initiated in the control room. If the temperature exceeds the preset maximum level a load shedding of the gas turboset is initiated. MKP10 CP001: Measurement of pressure The measurement indicates the system pressure locally. MKP10 CP002: Measurement of pressure It monitors the system pressure and initiates an alarm in the control room, if the pressure drops below the preset level required for operation. MKP10 CP006: Measurement of differential pressure It monitors the differential pressure across the operating circulating pump MKP10 AP001 or AP003. If the differential pressure drops below the preset level required for operation it initiates an alarm in the control room and the change-over to the standby pump. MKP10 DP001: Pressure limiting valve The valve protects the cooling system MKP10 against excessive pressure. MKP10 DT001: Temperature control valve The valve controls the cooling water temperature and operates as follows: 1 When the valve outlet temperature is below the preset limit (for example during start-up) cooling water is directed from (B) to (A) through the temperature control valve, bypassing the coolers. 2 When cooling output is low (for example during part-load operation, very low ambient temperature), the valve proportions the flow, part of which passes from (C) to (A) after flowing through the the coolers, the remainder passes from (B) to (A) after flowing through the bypass. 3 During normal operation (base load, peak load) the full cooling water flow is directed through the coolers, passing from (C) to (A) through the control valve.
