Familiarize with the US Army Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training Process CONDITIONS: In a classroom; given an overview of the US Army BRM process STANDARDS: Soldier is familiar with: the three BRM phases and the ten BRM periods; the four tenets of weapon safety; weapon handling procedures; the three weapon readiness statuses; and negligent discharge ACTION:

Understand BRM Training

Overview
Phase I. Preliminary Marksmanship Instruction. BRM 1 - Introduction to BRM BRM 2 - Marksmanship Fundamentals and Range Procedures using local facilities BRM 3 -Marksmanship Fundamentals and Range Procedures using the Engagement Skills Trainer (EST) 2000 Phase II. Downrange Feedback. BRM 4 Group and Zero at 25 meters on a 25 meter zero range. BRM 5 Confirm Zero at distances up to 300 meters on a known distance (KD) range.

Phase III. Field Firing. BRM 6 Single Targets at variable ranges on a field fire or KD range. BRM 7 Single and Multiple Targets at variables ranges and exposure times using the EST 2000. BRM 8 Single and Multiple Targets at variables ranges and exposure times on a field fire range using location of hit and miss (LOMAH), if available. Four Basic Tenets of Weapon Safety
ALWAYS treat EVERY weapon as if it is loaded NEVER point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot - Maintain muzzle awareness

ALWAYS keep your weapon on "Safe unless you are going to squeeze the trigger
ALWAYS keep your finger outside the Trigger Well unless you are ready to shoot

Weapon Handling
SAFE Position
Your Weapon should always be on SAFE unless stored in unit arms room or immediately prior to an engagement of a target.

Understand BRM Training

Weapon Positions
Individual Weapon positions Weapon Firing Positions (Basic and Advanced) Used when actively firing your weapon. Weapon Ready Positions (High and Low) Used when moving and the threat level is high.

Weapon Carry Positions (Includes sling arms, low port carry, the carrying handle carry, etc.) Used when moving and the threat level is low.
Manual of Arms Positions Used during drill and ceremonies.

Understand BRM Training

Identify Weapon Status
Weapon Status is described by one of three conditions. The steps in the loading and unloading process take the weapon through these three specific conditions of readiness. Green Weapon on Safe No magazine inserted in weapon Bolt forward, ejection port cover closed Amber Weapon on Safe Magazine with ammunition inserted in weapon Bolt forward, no round in chamber, ejection port cover closed Red Weapon on Safe Magazine with ammunition inserted in weapon Round chambered, ejection port cover closed
