Middle School Students Can Enroll in High School

Courses in the Following Subject Areas:
Math Courses
A middle school student who is accelerated is allowed to enroll in high school math courses,
such as Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 while in middle school. The middle school student
must meet the prerequisites of the high school math course to enroll in it.

If a middle school student takes a high school math course that has an EOC assessment, the
middle school student is required to take the EOC assessment and score a Level III or higher to
meet the NC High School exit standard. The EOC assessment score must count at least 25% of
the student’s final grade.

These courses will count toward the NC High School Graduation Requirements of four (4) math
courses while in high school. No quality points are earned for high school GPA in these courses,
though.

Foreign Language Courses

Middle School students are allowed to take the first three high-school levels of a foreign
language while in middle school.

These courses will count toward the 2 required credits in the College / University Preparatory
Course of Study and the 2 credits required to meet minimum application requirement for the
UNC University System.

In the Future Ready Core, 2 credits of a Second Language in high school are not required for
graduation.

Science Courses
The high school science graduation requirements for students in the Career Preparation, College
Technical Preparation and College University Preparation Course of Study are 3 science credits:
a biology course, an Earth/Environmental Science course and a physical science course.
A middle school student, who is accelerated, can take a high school science course; however, the
middle school student should take a more advanced course in the same area in high school to
meet the graduation requirements.
If a middle school student takes a high school science course that has an EOC assessment, the

Additional Courses

Currently middle school students may also enroll in Success 101 but no high school credit is
earned for this course.
