This pattern is my take on a Japanese Haramaki (belly warmer). It can be worn at hip/waist
level for warmth or around your shoulders for an impromptu shawl.

You could also use this pattern as a table runner – just omit the directions to join into a tube!

Chart Details
All odd-numbered rows are knit. The even-numbered rows are knit or purled to bring out
the image.

Read the chart from bottom to top. Odd-numbered rows are read from right to left; even-
numbered rows are read from left to right.

Red rows are worked in MC; white rows and green squares are both worked in CC (the green
squares are there only so you can see what the image will look like – they do not indicate a color
change).

Finished Measurement
Width: 27 cm (10.5")
Length: as desired to fit wearer’s hip measurement (sample is 87 cm (34") long or 4 repeats of
the chart)

Gauge
24 sts and 38 rounds = 10 cm (4”) in 4 row repeats of 2 rows garter stitch and 2 rows
stockinette stitch

You’ll need:
 2 colors of yarn in worsted weight, a main color or MC (background) and a contrasting
color or CC (image). In the sample picture, MC is beige and CC is red.
 4.0 mm needles
Body Warmer Instructions
Cast on 60 stitches in MC, placing markers after 10 and 50 stitches. Change colors after every
2nd row, carrying the yarn up the side.

Note: To be worn at hip/waist level, the body warmer should extend from the wearer’s
lower ribcage to upper thigh. Be sure to check gauge. If a wider body warmer is desired,
add an equal number of stitches to each end of the cast-on row. And remember to change
the marker placement or the image will be off-center! (There should be 40 stitches
between the markers with an equal number of stitches on each end.)

*Rows 1-3: K to first marker, follow chart between markers, K to end of row.
Row 4: P to first marker, follow chart between markers, P to end of row.

Repeat from * until chart is complete. Continue repeating chart until desired length is reached.
Note: length should be approximately equal to but less than the wearer’s widest hip
measurement. Ending with either Row 32 or Row 76 will make the vine ends match when the
body warmer is joined.

Bind off. Block if necessary.

Stitch short ends together to make a tube.

Wear under or over clothing at hip/waist level (extending from bottom of ribcage to upper
thigh) for added warmth in cold weather, or wear around chest and over upper arms for an
alternative to a shawl.
