South India

May 10, 1979

Dear friends of South India Church of Christ Mission:

We have hesitated to write this letter because there are so many desperate appeals being sent
out these days. It is not our desire to add to that list. But we believe the time has come

for us to let the friends of this great work in South India know of the very real needs that exist. May we beg your indulgence for about three minutes to read this letter as we attempt to give you an honest report of the current financial status of this work?

Five years ago the Lord made available an unbelievable opportunity for Southern Asia Christian College to have valuable property of its own. The owner was willing to sell the property on a

five year payment plan with no due in April, and we have been worth more than $ 100,000.00. the remaining $ 10,000 without

interest. We are now at the last payment of $ 12,000. This was able to pay only $ 2,000 to date. We have a building that,is now We must not lose what has been gained. It is urgent that we pay delay. The seller has been most gracious. We must not take ad

be lost.

As I said, this has been a great blessing.

But it did take the little bit

of reserve we had for the college payment. We are so thankful that the hospital work can be helped in this way, and we feel sure you will agree that it was an opportunity that could not The reason these extra items hit us so hard is that we are trying to operate with the same budget we had five years ago. During that period, the work has expanded in a glorious way. But inflation and devaluation have made the available funds shrink when they need to be growing. Every effort is being made to operate South India Church of Christ Mission without plunging more deeply into debt. We are presently paying on a note of $ 10,000.00 at a Danville, Illinois, bank. This we can handle, but this makes further borrowing impossible. It is absolutely a necessity that we receive at least $ 20,000.00 in special gifts by the end of our fiscal year, June 30. This much is needed to complete the payment on the college property and bring all other obligations on the field to a current status. Then it is important that the regular giving be increased in order to keep the work at its present level and reach out to the great
opportunities for soul saving that exist.

We are trying to operate on a budget of S 150,000.00

least $ 200,000.00 per year, the victories would be tremendous.

Let me summarize. The expanse of the work demands additional support. Please see the back of this letter for a summary of the many aspects of the Mission. This will help you to under stand my reference to the vastness of the work. The need: (1) $ 10,000.00 to pay off the college property; (2) $ 10,000.00 to bring all on field accounts current; (3) An increase in budgeted giving.
The writer of this letter has been to India. I have seen the vastness of the work. I am not

sitting 10,000 miles away trying to imagine what the work is.

I know what it is.

Your prayerful attention will be most appreciated. If every recipient of this letter would be able to give $ 20.00, the need would be met. It is obvious that this Is not possible for we know many of you are on fixed incomes that are very limited. But a few substantial gifts and
many small ones will do the job. Thank you for responding in whatever way you can.
Yours In Christ,

Robert C. Hilgediek, Chairman
