TheAmberdmsBillingSystemisapowerful,userfriendly,opensourcebillingsystemdesignedforsmallandmediumbusinessesand
isfullyopensourceundertheGNUAGPLsoftwarelicense.
ThisguidedetailsthestepstoinstalltheAmberdmsBillingSystemontoyourownserverswhenrunninganofficially
supportedplatform.

AmberdmsdoesnotrecommendorsupportinstallingonSharedHostingproviders,theseprovidersoftenhaverestrictedPHP's
featuresandpreventinstallationofcomponentssuchaspdflatexorSELinuxpoliciescausingundesirableandbrokenapplication

Infuture,thisfeaturewillbeextendedtocheckforupdatesaswell,toinformadministratorswhenthereisanewversionofthe
softwareavailable(withsecurityorbugfixes).
Ifyouwishtodisablethephonehomefeature,youcandosoonceinstalled,bylogginginasanadministrator,goingtothecontrol
panelandthendisablingthePHONE_HOMEoption(althoughitmeansalottousifyoudidn't).

RHEL5shipswithPHP5.1.6.ThislimitsthefeaturesetoftheAmberdmsBillingSystemandmeansthatthefollowing
featuresarenotenabledorsupported:
1.

Userspecifictimezonesarenotsupported.Allusersarelimitedtousingthedefaultservertimezone.

BydefaultAmberdmsshipsanewerversionofPHPforCentOS5ifthisnewversionisundesirable,youcansimply
disabledtheamberdmsupdatesrepobeforeinstallingtheamberdmsbspackage.
Warning:ThereisnoguaranteethatthisnewerPHPversionis100%compatiblewithotherapplicationsonyour
systemusingPHP.ItisrecommendedyouruntheAmberdmsBillingSysteminit'sowndedicatedvirtualmachine.

SELINUX

Bydefault,RHEL5hasSELinuxenabled,thistendstointerferewithPDFgenerationinABS.Toresolvethis,theinstall
RPMwillautomaticallyinstallpolicymodulestoenablecorrectoperationwhenSELinuxisinenforcingmode.

APPLICATIONINSTALLATION

ThebestmethodtoinstalltheAmberdmsBillingSystemistosetuptheAmberdmsYumRepositoryandinstallthe
amberdmsbsRPMpackage.
Installtheyumrepositorywith:
$ cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
$ wget http://repos.jethrocarr.com/config/centos/5/amberdms-c5-public.repo
InstalltheAmberdmsBillingSystemwith:
$ yum install amberdms-bs
Byusingtheyumrepository,youwillautomaticallyreceiveupdatestoourproductandalldependencieswillbe
automaticallyresolved.
Ifyouwishtopreventautomatedupgrades,youcandosobyediting/etc/yum.repos.d/amberdmsc5public.repoand
changingenabled=1,toenabled=0todisableeachrepo.

DATABASEINSTALLATION

Note:IfyouhaveonlyjustinstalledtheMySQLdatabase,youshouldsetarootpasswordforsecurity.Toconfigurearoot
password,runthefollowingcommands:
$ /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'NEWPASSWORD' -p
$ /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h $HOSTNAME password 'NEWPASSWORD'
OncetheAmberdmsBillingSystemhasbeeninstalled,youwillneedtoinstallaMySQLdatabaseandsetupauserforthe
billingsystemtouse.
Amberdmshasdevelopedautilitytomakeitquickandeasytoinstallthedatabase.Justrun:
$ cd /usr/share/amberdms/billing_system/help/resources/; ./autoinstall.pl

$ yum upgrade amberdms-bs
OncetheSQLupgradehasbeencompleted,youwillbeabletologintothebillingsystem.Iftheupgradeisunsuccessful,userswill
beunabletologintopreventunexpectedbehaviourofthebillingsystem.
Youshouldalreadyhaveabackupprocedureinplaceonyourserver,howeveritisadvisedtocreateanadditionalbackupbefore

defaultsothisisunlikelytoaffectmostusers.
