Instructional Methods
Hook: (5 Min) Have the students look at the board at the acronyms you have written on it. Tell students to write down what they think the acronyms stand for in there notebook. Review: (5 Min) The teacher should ask students for 5 examples of how the immune system works or how it functions to protect us from the previous days lesson. Preview Unit: (3 Min) Inform the students that in this unit they will be talking about infectious and non infectious diseases. Also inform them that at times conversation may be uncomfortable but the information given will benefit them in the long run. Go over power point. Preview Lesson: (2 Min) Inform the students that today they will be learning about STIs and the negative consequences that come with them, as well as different ways to prevent them and places they can turn to for help. Activity/New Content: (20-25 Minutes)
Go over the acronyms on the board that students should have written in their notebooks. If students do not know the definitions of some of the acronyms go over them as a class and give the definitions to them Have students split up into groups of three or four depending on the size of the class and hand out a chart to each group with a different STI labeled on each chart. Inform the students that they will have 1 minute to write down as much as they know about the particular STI before they have to pass it clockwise to the next group.
(Computers may be used) Continue doing this until each group have received each of the different charts for different STIs. Pose the question to them for the sheet in front of them Is this enough information to keep me safe? Give each group a 5 Things To Know worksheet and see if they answered all of the questions on the sheet on the chart in front of them. Questions include: How do you get it, how can you prevent it, how do you know if you have it, can it be cured or where can you get tested, and what can happen if you dont get treated. Have students raise their hand and give some credible examples of places you can go for help or testing if you think you may have one of these diseases. Create your own list in case they dont come up with any.
Review Lesson: (3 Min) Ask students to raise their hand and name 3 STIs and ways to prevent them Preview Next Lesson: (3 Min) Tell students that tomorrow they will be learning about condom use and how to keep safe when choosing to partake in sexual intercourse. Closing Statement: (>1 Minute) Thank students for participating and tell them that you hope they learned some useful information.
Accommodations
Modifications/Enrichment/Extension: If the classroom has somebody that is confined to a wheelchair and cant get around the classroom very well have the group members go to that person. For a person who is gifted and talented ask them to give the definitions of the acronym words on the board that other students may have missed. Home & Family Involvement: Send home the True False quiz on assessing student understanding of STIs and have the student bring it back tomorrow for points.
