Jaunts to view fall foliage are popular excursions come
autumn. The vivid color on display in forests and parks
is simply too much for many motorists to resist.
Though natures beauty is often on display regardless of
geography, some locales tend to boast more beauteous
backdrops and picturesque landscapes than others. The
key is to visit during peak viewing times.
Leaves begin to change earlier in the northernmost
latitudes. For example, much of Canada and portions of
the northern United States begin to witness changes in
foliage in late September, whereas regions further south
must wait until October to see those changes. Mid-
October is when peak times are most prevalent for the
greatest portion of the United States. Travelers in North
Dakota and Wyoming can view fall foliage at this time.
Autumn coloring persists until late October and early
November in certain areas, including the southeastern
and central regions of the United States.
When planning a road trip to see fall foliage, pay
attention to local weather and foliage reports.
Remember, road trips are quite popular this time of year,
and municipal parks may be quite crowded on the
weekends. If you can spare time off during the week, it
may work to your advantage to cruise around when
traffic is less congested. Bring along maps or a GPS
system so that you can travel to multiple areas.
Autumn leaves can be enjoyed from a car, but they are
equally enjoyable when experienced on a hiking trip.
Pack a bagged lunch and picnic in a quiet spot, and
youre bound to spot squirrels and other wildlife
gathering up food reserves in preparation for the winter
weather.
The best days to see leaves are those days that are cool
and dry. Leaves that fall on roadways and are dampened
by rain can be very slippery, so it is important to exercise
caution while driving.

More than 75 staff members, volunteers
and donors visited Hospice of the
Panhandles soon-to-be occupied new
home last Thursday. CEO Margaret
Cogswell and several staff led those
attending on a tour of the two new
facilities, a 14-bed inpatient unit and
office building, located on 19 acres of land
on the Berkeley-Jefferson county line.
Building the inpatient unit has been the
dream of Hospice Board chair GT
Schramm for years.
It is wonderful to see how far weve
come, Schramm said. Its really a great
day.
Hospice officials expect patients whose
pain and symptoms are unmanageable at
home to use the inpatient unit for several
days. The average length of stay will be
between three and seven days. The unit
also will be used to provide respite care for
caregivers who need a break from their
task. The office building will house staff
from Berkeley and Jefferson counties.
The two buildings are slated to open in
early 2014.
Also at the groundbreaking, the South
Jefferson Ruritan Club presented Hospice
with a check for $5,000. Michael Dick,
the president of the club, said the proceeds
came from concessions from the Jefferson
County Fair. The Ruritans are long-time
supporters of Hospice.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. In recognition
of National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, University Healthcare and the
WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences
Center Eastern Division will sponsor a
community mini-medical school program
on breast cancer.
The seminar will be held on Tuesday,
October 15 in the WVU Robert C. Byrd
Health Sciences Center on the Berkeley
Medical Center campus. The guest
speakers are both board certified
physicians on the medical staff at Jefferson
Medical Center.
Angela Oglesby, MD, practices at the
WVU Womens Health Center in Ranson
and Thomas Alewine, MD, is a radiologist
at Jefferson Medical Center. Both
physicians are also assistant professors for
the WVU School of Medicine.
Early detection and prevention of breast
cancer will be the focus of the
presentation. Attendees will learn how to
recognize the early signs of breast cancer,
and the medical/surgical techniques that
help detect and treat breast cancer.
Registration begins at 6:30 pm with the
program to follow from 7 8 pm. Light
refreshments will be offered at the
conclusion of the seminar.
This community mini-medical school
program is being offered free to the public
as a community service of University
Healthcare and the WVU Health Sciences
Center Eastern Division. Reservations are
strongly recommended. For more

Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle and
the Eastern Panhandle WVU Alumni
Chapter and Mountaineer Fan Club will
host the fourth annual Inside The Huddle
with Tony Caridi on Tuesday, October 8 at
the Holiday Inn, Martinsburg.
The event will begin with at 5:30 p.m.
with tailgate food and beverages followed
by Caridis remarks at 7 pm. His
presentation will provide an insiders view
of the 2013 season.
Caridi is in his 30th season as the play-
by-play announcer for the West Virginia
University Mountaineers. His magical
talent allows any WVU fan who can get
close to a radio or computer to have their
own seat at the Coliseum or inside Mylan
Puskar Stadium.
Tickets are available at $40 per adult. A
cash bar will be available throughout the
evening. The dinner event will include a
silent auction featuring various WVU
items. Tickets must be purchased in
advance.
Sponsorships ranging from $500 to
$5,000 are also available. All proceeds
from the dinner will benefit the Boys &
Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle, a
United Way agency.
We are moving Inside The Huddle to
the Holiday Inn this year, and encourage
all Mountaineer fans to take advantage of
this opportunity to spend an evening with
Tony Caridi in a tailgate/gameday
atmosphere, commented Gail Shade,
event chairperson. Its an opportunity to
hear about the 2013 football season while
supporting a good causea win/win for
all, she added.

yard at the nave door
immediately adjacent to the

during this service will be
gentle to avoid offending
the delicate ears of our ani-
mal guests. A reception
featuring various animal
treats will be served follow-

will promote animal welfare
