Katie Sabourin Brittany Bootka Skylar Darish UNIT PLAN: PART 1 Background What kind of unit are you

developing and why? We are developing a data collection (measurement) and data display (graphing) unit. What is the unit about? Describe your theme, topic, or major concept. (2 points) Math measurement and graphing of real world objects Describe the rationale or enduring understanding. (4 points) Math Common Core Standards require students to collect and interpret data, and science GLCEs require students to measure and collect data, as well as share data. This unit will prepare students for the fourth grade GLCEs and CCSS in data collection and data representation. It will also prepare them for solving story problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements. They will also be equipped with the background knowledge and experiences necessary to conduct higher level experiments in the future. Identify the major class or subject area of the unit, the appropriate grade levels, and the length of time for the unit (minimum is three weeks). Subject Area: Math (with science) Grade: Third Grade Length of Time: 5 Weeks Overview (20 points) Professional content standards. List all relevant GLCEs and CCSS. (4 points) S.IP.03.14 Manipulate simple tools that aid observation and data collection (for example: hand lens, balance, ruler, meter stick, measuring cup, thermometer, spring scale, stop watch/timer). S.IP.03.15 Make accurate measurements with appropriate units (centimeters, meters, Celsius, grams, seconds, minutes) for the measurement tool. S.IP.03.16 Construct simple charts and graphs from data and observations. CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.B.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step how many more and how many less problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets. CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.B.4 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units whole numbers, halves, or quarters. Unit goals and long term objectives (6 points): Unit Goals: 1. Make observations and collect data using specific tools correctly

2. Accurately measure objects using appropriate units 3. Construct charts and graphs based off of the measurements and observations 4. Accurately measure objects using halves and fourths of an inch and then represent the data using a graph. 5. Long Term Objective: When given real world problems the students will be able to use real world tools such as rulers, calculators, and spread sheets to measure objects using different units of measurement (inches, cm, ft.) and represent their findings in various types of graphs (bar graph, pie graph, plot graph) with 80% accuracy. Concepts to be taught. This needs to be a list with brief explanations for each. (6 points) Teach students how to use different types of measuring tools (hand lens, balance, ruler, meter stick, measuring cup, tbs/tsp, thermometer, spring scale, stop watch/timer The purpose of each type of graph, as well as how to create each type of graph. We will spend one day teaching each type of graph and having the students create examples using premade data. (bar graph, line/plot graph, pie chart, pictograph) Use appropriate units when measuring (centimeters, meters, Celsius, grams, seconds, minutes, kg, l) Collect data (real world) and construct a chart or a graph (bar graph, line/plot graph) Measure liquid volumes and masses using the correct standard units and representing the data with a drawing chart or graph (see units and types of graphs above) Draw a scaled graph then using several categories to represent the data Measuring objects to halves and fourths of an inch then representing the data using a graph.

Essential Questions Identify an overarching Essential Question for the unit. (4 points) How can I collect data, and then represent the data that I have collected? How can I read interpret data that is represented in graphs?
