Faculty Justification of the course

As assigned according to area of clinical specialty. This course was designed to provide learning experiences that develop intellectual, interpersonal skills and nursing techniques essential for therapeutic interventions with adults. The location of this course will facilitate the integration of knowledge and nursing principles previously acquired in other courses. The student will be able to apply nursing process and utilize critical judgment in decision making to solve problems when

caring adults in medical surgical area at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Course Description In this course the student utilizes the cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills required for the ministering of comprehensive nursing care to the adult. Learning experiences are geared towards the integration of knowledge about the structural and physiological alterations that interfere with adult homeostasis during the sub-stages that comprise adulthood. Learning experiences are provided so that the student develops: acknowledgment in the application of the nursing process, communication skills, critical thinking and therapeutic interventions in the ministration of care.

The student examines the biological, physiological, spiritual and social changes characteristic to this stage of growth and development as the basic elements in the therapeutic intervention. Ethical and legal aspects to be considered throughout the intervention are also examined, as well as the need for emphasis on self-care especially during the middle years and late adulthood.

Course contents in organized around theory, skills laboratory, clinical seminars and clinical experience. Second and tertiary level health agencies are used as laboratory for clinical experience. Competence and Terminal Objectives C1 Integrate the knowledge of the process of life. T1 Analyzes adulthood as a phase of growth and development of the human being. T2 Examines the physiological, social, psychological and spiritual changes of the adult as part of the process of aging. T3 Valorize ethical and legal aspects to be considered in the ministering of nursing care. C2 Utilize effectively the nursing process in the ministering of care to the adult. T4 Utilize the principles of the therapeutic communication in the nurse client interaction.

T5 Assesses the problems that threaten the integrity of the adult patient which demands nursing intervention. T6 Develop the nursing care plan according to the identified nursing diagnosis. T7 Implement the nursing care plans based on the scientific, humanistic nursing knowledge and relevant research when intervenes as a generalist nurse with adult client. T8 Evaluate the effect of nursing interventions in the client health states. C3 Assumes the leadership role when making decision in the management of direct care for the adult. T9 Identify alternatives of nursing care when analyze critically selected clinical nursing situations. T10 Demonstrate leadership skills when offering direct care to the adult. Cualquiera de estas acciones estar sujeta a sanciones disciplinarias en conformidad con el procedimiento disciplinario establecido en el Reglamento General de Estudiantes de la UPR vigente.

Academic Integrity The University of Puerto Rico promotes the highest standards of academic and scientific integrity. Article 6.2 of the UPR Student Bylaws (Certification JS 13 20092010) states that "academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to: fraudulent actions, obtaining grades or academic degrees using false or fraudulent simulations, copying totally or partially academic work from another person, plagiarizing totally or partially the work of another person, copying totally or partially responses from another person to examination questions, making another person to take any test, oral or written examination on his/hers behalf, as well as assisting or facilitating any person to incur in the aforementioned conduct". Fraudulent conduct refers to "behavior with the intent to defraud, including but not limited to, malicious alteration or falsification of grades, records, identification cards or other official documents of the UPR or any other institution." Any of these actions shall be subject to disciplinary sanctions in accordance with the disciplinary procedure, as stated in the existing UPR Student Bylaws.
