Whole-class activity
Point to the pictures on the poster and ask students to identify the types o f music they represent. Ask students if they can identify the artist/group in each picture. Put students into groups o f three (if there are one or two students left over, make up one or two groups o f four). Give each the name o f one o f the music types in the lower half o f the poster (ie, not Rock'n'roll or Soul). Stronger groups can be assigned two types o f music. (It doesn't matter if more than one group is assigned the same type o f music.) Students elect one member o f their group (Student A ) to do all the writing for the activity. Either give the groups photocopies of the following questions, or dictate the questions to the groups: 1 When/Where did this type o f music start? 2 Can you name any performers o f this type o f music? 3 What other types o f music is this type related to? 4 What are the main characteristics o f this type o f music? 5 Do you, as a group, like this type of music? Circulate round the class, giving help if necessary. One member from each group can go up to the poster to gather information. They may not write the information down, but must pass it on to the group orally. Only Student A writes anything. If the specific information is not given on the poster, encourage students to try to give their own answers.
The Teacher's Resource Pack also contains a poster (The Story o f Pop) for use in the classroom. This poster combines a 'family tree' o f popular music with vocabulary and grammar familiar to students from the Dream Team Student's Books. The poster can be permanently or temporarily attached to the classroom wall and used for whole-class activities or for time-filling / extension activities with small groups or individual students.
If some groups finish the task much earlier than the others, ask them to write a paragraph about their type o f music, or assign them another type o f music to research. When each group has answered all the questions for at least one type o f music, the Student As report back to the class about their types o f music.
Individual activities
L o w level: give weaker students a list o f statements about the types o f music, some o f which are true and some o f which are false. Example: 1 Motown was based in N ew York, USA. 2 Rock'n'roll comes from 'rhythm and blues'. M iddle level: give students a list o f comprehension questions based on the poster. Example: 1 Where was the home of Merseybeat? 2 What are the main ingredients of heavy metal? H igh level: get stronger students to write a quiz, using information from the poster. Copy their quizzes and give them to the other students in the class to complete.
Whole-class activity 2
Keep the same groups from the first activity. Give each student a photocopied questionnaire, like the one below, asking them to grade each type o f music on a scale o f 5 (love) to 1 (hate). Each student takes turns at asking another their opinion o f each type o f music, e.g. What do you think o f rock'n'roll? When every student in every group has been questioned, the Student As report to the rest of the class what the most popular and most unpopular types o f music for their group. collate the information to determine what is the most popular and most unpopular type o f music for the whole class.

(sample answer) Ricky has been to New Zealand and Malaysia. He hasn't... been to the USA, but he'd really like to one day. He hasn't done anything very dangerous because he isn't very brave. But he has written a few love letters! He has met one famous person. Her name is Judy Nunn, but she is only famous in Australia. The person he'd most like to meet is Cameron Diaz. So would I!
