USAs Cultural Melting Pot

Melting pot1 refers to the idea that societies formed by immigrants of different cultures, religions, and races, will produce a new hybrid society. The concept of melting pot is not the same as assimilation because it implies the ability of new or subordinate groups to affect the values of the dominant group. In the early 19th century, America was romantically seen not only as land of opportunity but as a society where individuals of all nations were melted into a new and better race of men. The new nation welcomed virtually all immigrants from Europe in the belief that the United States would become, at least for whites, the "melting pot" of the world. In the 1840s, many people from Britain, Ireland and Germany arrived in the USA. After the Civil War, Scandinavians and groups from Poland, Italy and small numbers from the Middle East, China, and Japan decided to settle down in the land of opportunity. Before World War I (1914-1918), the American public generally considered that the constant arrival of immigrants brought strength and prosperity to the country. However, in the 1920s there were fewer immigrants from north-western Europe and American citizens became conscious of the difficulties of assimilating so many people from other parts of the world. As a result, the U.S. Congress passed laws restricting immigration. The term of melting pot has traditionally been used to describe the USA and the creation of the American nation. This view on American society has been criticised both as unrealistic and racist, because it focused on the Western heritage and excluded nonEuropean immigrants often also East and South Europeans. The melting pot reality was limited only to intermixing between Europeans with a strong emphasis on the Anglo-Saxon culture and, in most cases, the subordinate groups adopted the Western AngloSaxon values of the dominant group.
The notion comes from the pot in which metals are melted at great heat, mixing together into new compound, with great strength and other combined advantages
