The Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut is a professionally staffed outpatient mental health center for children and adolescents who experience psychological, behavioral, developmental, social or family problems. We are dedicated to reducing emotional suffering and dysfunctional behavior, strengthening families, and helping each child and adolescent achieve optimal potential.

Message from the President and Chairman

Dear Friends, This year was marked by exciting accomplishments and changes at CGC. In keeping with the theme of All Together Now, we are gratified by our longtime partnerships with schools, medical providers, law enforcement and other community agencies, and look forward with enthusiasm to new projects that will maximize our impact in the community. As always, we are extraordinarily grateful to the foundations, corporations, and philanthropically inclined individuals who support high quality mental health services for local children and families. During the past year, we welcomed new staff members and were happy to have several individuals already at CGC take on new leadership roles. With strong Chairman of the Board of Directors, Laura Weintraub Beck Directors in place for each of our programs and at our community offices, (left) with CGCs President and CEO, Sherry Perlstein (right) CGC continues to set the standard for specialized mental health services for children, adolescents and families in our region. We were recognized for the exceptional quality of our work at a January Enhanced Care Clinic recertification review, where program monitors remarked that our records reflect the uniqueness of each patient, thoughtfulness of our approach, and the rationale for our interventions. Sadly, the year was also marked by tragedy. In December CGC clinicians were deployed to Newtown as part of the States official Emergency Mobile Crisis network following the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Though incidents of mass killings in schools are extremely rare, their impact is devastating, and this shocking event highlighted the need for early identification of young people who may have a type of mental health disorder that combined with other factors could put them at risk for engaging in targeted school violence. While early identification is key, we also caution against stigma and generalization, knowing most individuals with mental health disorders are far more likely to harm themselves than others and with proper treatment are no more likely than the general population to commit violent acts. In studying targeted school violence, we came away with some crucial points to remember: Incidents of targeted violence at schools are rarely sudden, impulsive acts Prior to most incidents, other people knew about the attackers idea and or plan No accurate profile exists for students who engage in targeted school violence Most attackers engaged in some concerning behavior prior to the incident Many attackers felt bullied, persecuted, or injured prior to the attack With these principles in mind, CGC launched a more proactive approach to targeted school violence by drafting Collaborative School Violence Risk Assessment Protocols based on expert research and recommendations. Local schools and police have agreed to work with us on this project and will use their own expertise to help customize protocols for each community. These measures will promote the safety of students and school staff while reducing unnecessary suspensions and expulsions that increasingly occur as an over-reactive response to students concerning behaviors. For many of the more than 2,000 children CGC served last year, treatment is a transformative event that makes the difference between a life of suffering and one filled with health and happiness. Come Play!...Save The Day

Every spring, guests come together for a benefit gala to support the crucial work CGC does for children and families in our community. At Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich, we celebrate our achievements helping those who are struggling while also remembering there is much left to be done. The theme, Come Play!, is inspired by the importance of play in a childs life. All proceeds support CGCs critical mental health services and ensure help is available to all children and families in need.

In FY13, 87% of children who completed treatment had their symptoms stabilized or achieved improved functioning, mood, self-concept or developmental skills.

Programs and Services

CGC provides a broad range of high-quality treatment services tailored to each childs individual needs, challenges and strengths. Mental health treatment for children is not simply about changing behavior, but also about helping children feel differently about themselves and their possibilities, and helping parents to be more competent, confident and loving in their parenting.

Crisis Programs
Child Sexual Abuse Response Team is an interagency team that integrates criminal justice and protective services investigations while providing comprehensive strategies to resolve consequences of abuse and prevent re-victimization Emergency Mobile Crisis Services provide immediate mental health assessment and crisis stabilization services 7 days a week for children and adolescents experiencing serious psychiatric symptoms or severe reactions to a traumatic event. Community Policing Partnership provides 7 day per week outreach services to child victims and high risk children identified by police. Community Emergency Response Program offers on-site counseling for emergencies impacting large groups in the community, including natural disasters or school violence.

Ongoing Treatment Programs

Child and Family Therapy, the cornerstone of CGC for 60 years, utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to provide a broad range of comprehensive individualized mental health assessments and treatment services, tailored to meet the needs of each child and family. Child First provides intensive home-based services to decrease emotional disturbances, developmental and learning problems, and child abuse or neglect among young children (prenatal 6 years) living in high-risk environments. Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy provides intensive treatment services in-home and at community sites for youngsters with high-risk behavioral problems. System of Care helps families of seriously emotionally disturbed, abused or neglected children meet complex needs by helping families access integrated services to safely maintain children at home and avoid the disruption of out-of-home placement.

Collaborating with schools, law enforcement, and other community partners to promote success for children

Prevention Programs
Community Education offers seminars and workshops for the general public and professionals working with children to increase awareness of issues affecting child development. Community Consultation Services offer professional consultation services to area schools, courts, residential facilities and shelters, substance abuse programs and other youth serving agencies to help them more effectively respond to the special needs of youth.
