The Beaver Tale October 2007

President’s Note
Fall is finally upon us! The mornings are cooler and the cottonwoods along the Cienega at the Springs
Preserve are starting to go from green to bright yellow. The plants and animals love it and it is great time
of year to live in southern Nevada.

As I write this, the Cactus Fest has not yet happened, but by the time you get this, it will be done and
over! (Well, except for finishing the bookkeeping, putting stuff away, thanking everyone, and getting
Dave and Kris Turner’s grass to grow back!) I am confident the event went well and can only hope the
weather cooperated. Susan (Kent), in particular among the folks in charge, I’m sure did a terrific job
advertising the event, lining up vendors, presenters, volunteers, AND making sure some FOOD was
around.

Moving on, I want to compliment our Program Chair, Victor, on lining up such interesting and
outstanding presenters. The last two presenters were as varied as it can get and added much to our
knowledge and understanding of cacti and succulents and their habitat. This month Victor is going to
preview several other nurseries (and botanical gardens?) that he believes would be interesting tours.
He will also conduct a survey that will involve us in his decision process. After all, the club as a whole
should influence where we go, whom we invite, and how we spend our funds.

We will be having our usual raffle and door-prize giveaways and be finalizing our fall events, including a
private tour of the Springs Preserve. I look forward to seeing all of our regulars, plus all those new
members we will be snagging at the Cactus Fest.

Victor Lindsey is our September speaker.
He operates a successful “e-bay” store and,
of course, is our CSSSN Vice President. He
is going to give us a visual and verbal review
of some of the nurseries and probably
botanical gardens that he believes we could
visit or from which we could draw future
speakers. We are also going to participate in
a survey to help him determine our interests.
(Hint: How about senior hikes and Junior
Member Outings? Collaborating with UNLV,
UNCE, other Garden Clubs, & Springs
Preserve. . .) Involving us all in some of the
future events and programs is a good thing!

CACTUS FEST SUCCESS – A FUN TIME WAS HAD BY ALL THAT ATTENDED! For
those of you that do not have website access and could not attend, here is a summary of
people that presented programs and vendors. “Plant Exhibition” (show) photos are on the
web site. Linda Meng’s “Best in Show Mammillaria” is shown here. The “People’s Choice
Award” also went to Linda. It was a gorgeous Haworthia that she generously donated for

Standings & Guidelines

What Is a “Cactus Point?”

The purpose of the program is to recognize the individuals within the organization (CSSSN)
for their involvement and efforts. Points are given for attendance at monthly meeting and
events and extra efforts on their part on behalf of the club.

The program will be managed by a person or committee chosen by the president.

Those persons who earn the most Cactus Points in the calendar year will be recognized and
honored appropriately—as determined by the Board—at the January meeting of the
following year. The percentage of club members so honored will be determined by the
Board.

How?

By quantifying involvement through awarding points as follows:

1. Attend monthly CSSSN meeting = 10 points

2. Attend Board meeting, as a member of the Board or as an observer or invited guest = 5

points

3. Attend club-sponsored field trip or event = 5 points

4. Attend any function or meeting as an invited representative of CSSSN = 5 points

5. Publish an article or other item for the CSSSN newsletter or Internet web site = 5-10 points
(as determined by the editor/website manager)

6. Extra involvement at club meeting or other club event, as determined by the president or
person in charge of the event, such as helping with set-up/clean-up or other activity = 5-10
points

(Such involvement could also include filling in for an absent club officer, sponsoring a
presenter or making a presentation, bringing plants in for the raffle or for show, or anything
else “over and above that expected.”

NOTE: items 2-6 limited to a maximum of 10 points per month total. (Maximum points eligible in a year is
230: 11 regular meeting per year = 11 x 10 [110] plus 12 x 10 [120] for items 2-6)
