As World War II was coming to an end during 1945, the creation of one of the most destructive weapons known

to humanity was created within the United States. This destructive weapon, known as the atomic bomb, was dropped on two Japan cities: Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing numerous of deaths and immediate unconditional surrender. Although some people may believe President Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb in order to end the war once and for all, Trumans real reason was to intimidate the Soviet Union. Soviet Union was almost the only world power in Europe that can still conquer and spread its influences across Asia and Europe. The US and Soviet Union relations had began to deteriorate, making the USs decision to drop those atomic bombs as a warning to the Soviet Union of their future movements and beliefs. The Japanese were never going to surrender and give up the war before the drop of the atomic bombs. The Japanese believed in fighting until the last man, due to samurai beliefs. The Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, believed that only way to defeat the Japanese was to destroy their whole military power and leave nothing behind (A). Because of their stubborn responses to the US warning and their unwillingness to surrender, both Truman and Americans found it strenuous to search for a way to defeat the Japanese as quick as possible. By just invading Japan and bombing the cities with normal bombs can extend the war period and the increase of casualties. Therefore by using the atomic bomb to evaporate a city in a blink of an eye was a natural and expected decision from President Truman. The decisions send two different messages to the world as some interpret the decisions as a way to end the war as quick as possible while other view it as an act to intimate the Soviet Union. It was clearly an act to intimate the Soviet Union due to the lack of relations between the Soviet and the US. The US didnt want any involvements of the Soviet Unions in Japan so that they can deal with the country themselves. Doc(C). The drop of the atomic bomb warned the Soviet Union clearly of not to interfere with the USs action in Japan. The Soviet Union tried to expand its influences to Europe and Asia. The Agreements of the Yalta Conference was a way that the Soviet Union was trying to building a grip and influences in East Asia by showing a great deal of influence in China (Doc D). The British believe that the bomb was an action that brings to an early end to an unnecessary war in Asia. The British view it as the US would do anything in its power to stop the spread of the Soviet Unions. (Doc E) With fears of what the Soviet Union might do to Europe and Asia, by trying to limit the Soviet Union, it drew many allies nations of wondering how to stop this nation. Soviet Union is already trying to rebuild from its twenty millions lost lives. By regaining their power, they could be a potential enemy and dangerous nation to the world. After winning the war in Europe and the development of the atomic bomb was another reason that US become more interested to limit the influences of Soviet Union. The iron curtain began to spread and set in Europe. The western was democracy and the eastern was communist. Soviet Union has already spread its influences and the US tried many ways to stop them. One of the ways was containment. The US had send aids to Europe nations such as Greece and Turkey to make them reject communist. The US tried to aid every nation but not all of them accepted such as the Soviet Unions. Although some nations wanted to accept, they were threaten by the Soviet Unions and brainwashed of not accepting it. They believe communism is a fair government, creating equals for everyone and even the poor were equal. Stopping the spread of Soviets influence was no

easy feat. The Soviets blockade on Berlin challenges the US of what the US is going to do. To leave the people of Berlin and let them die of starvation or to save them. The US tried to save them by dropping foods and aids that can rebuild and help Berlin. It lasted for almost a year until the Soviet began to end the blockade. The US tried again to intimidate the Soviet Unions of their capabilities that they are the only world power standing that can fight and strike any time when they are ready. Ultimately, The United States decision to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima was a diplomatic measure calculated to intimidate the Soviet Union in the post-Second-World-War era rather than a strictly military measure designed to force Japan's unconditional surrender. The tough decision that Truman made send out many different messages and how the nations and people interpret it. For the sake of the USs belief of what the world should be like was a reason to stop and limited the influences and the spread of the Soviets idea to other nations. Stopping a nations idea such as the Soviet was no easy feat which led to the Cold War that lasted for over forty years. In the years to come, the US continue to face challenges with the Soviets in anything such as arm races, spaces races.
