My fellow anglers and friends,

This issue (October 2013) marks our first anniversary since our first issue back in October 2012. We met with a lot of roadblocks, issues (technical and not technical), took a lot of risks, and we made it one year despite the odds. We have been told that we would not make it past our sixth issue and there was a lot of scepticism as we embarked on our adventure. The reason is that we are giving The Asian Angler out for free and the only way to keep the company a float is with advertising. There were times when we had to survive on instant noodles and lots of bread as our finances ran dry and yet we needed to upgrade our systems and whatnots. It was tough and I have to admit that we did ask ourselves if we could go on any longer. It is all of you that we have to thank for giving us the motivation to go on pass these hurdles. We received email thanking us and wishing us well. There were readers gave us ideas on what we could do. But most of all we knew we are on the right path when we started growing globally. We thank you for a good 1st year and we will most certainly do our best to make The Asian Angler a more enjoyable magazine for all. With that in mind we will be launching the bahasa Malaysia issues targeting the middle of this month as we received a lot of request for such. Thank you for your support and tight lines. Enjoy this issue. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

Need For Speed

Abu Garcia Revo LTZ AE-74 Racing
By Philemon Foo

Test Drives

21

Garcia has over the years been pushing out more and more extreme reels. They have been pushing the bar further and further with every new extreme JDM (Japan Domestic Product) reel. When you thought they have reached a limit, out pops another one. Affixed your eyes for here comes the Revo LTZ AE74-Racing.

Abu

23

Signature Reel
Slowly making my way to the sleek, black, side plate that is painted with a yellow stripe, I see this signature at the area just beside the thumbar. Looking at the signature you can tell that the person who signed it has a sporting nature. The signature belongs to IMAKATSU(Katsutaka Imae).

25

IMAKATSU(Katsutaka Imae)
So who is Imakatsu? He is a well known top pro angler in the Japan bass tournament circuit. He holds many titles. He was the Bass Angler of the year in 1989, 1990, and 1992. He won the Japan Super Bass Classic in 1996 an 1998. He won the Basser All Star Classic in 1991 and 1992. In 2003 he won the Japan Bass Champion of Champions tournament. He is the champion of the Japan Bass series in 2001 and 2004. He is also the champion in the Japan Bass Elite 5 contest in 2005. With a plethora of titles under his belt I am sure that he knows his fishing tackle really well. The Abu Garcia Revo LTZ AE74-Racing is one of those reels that is built for him in accordance to his needs, thus you see his signature on this beast (meant in a very good way).

27

Delicate Crest Design

Walking behind the reel to the other side and my attention was attracted by the spool control knob. Unlike the Revos before, this one comes with a well delicately embossed crest of the Swedish royal courts. This emits a hint of sporting luxury of which you will probably find sitting on the grill of a Rolls Royce.

29

Brushed Aluminium
Sit inside any luxury sports car today and you will see brushed aluminium trims adorning its dash and certain areas of the cabin. The Revo LTZ AE74Racing too showcases a brushed aluminium rim that is ported, sitting right behind the star drag giving it the sporty luxury look. This side plate also pays tribute to the earlier Abu Garcia Morrum AE74.

31

Carbon Fibre Handle

Step back out a little and you come to the carbon fibre handle. Carbon handles are lighter and they look good but they are quite common these days with mid to high-end reels. Worry not, if you have some money to throw, you can opt to pickup something hip from Hedgehog Studios if not just stick to the very reliable original carbon handle.

33

Handle Knobs
Handle knobs? Whats the big deal? All reels have handle knobs. Well, The Revo LTZ AE74-Racing doesnt just come with any handle knobs. It comes with the BFC light finesse knob. So you didnt know that there are knobs for finesse baitcasting? Well, now you do.

35

From a distance they look very much like ordinary rubber handle knobs. But they are actually made of plastic (some type). Well, plastics are lighter than rubber right? The handle knobs do feel light yet they dont feel cheap. I am not a fan of plastic knobs but this, I really dont mind at all.

37

Extra Super Duralumin Drive Gear

Now wait a minute. What the heck is duralumin? Duralumin is a type of alloy that is hard, strong, and lightweight that was widely used since its development in 1903. They were used in airplanes and airships, precision tools, auto body parts, etc. Over the years, with advancement in technology the use of duralumin include engine parts in aircraft and spacecraft fuel tanks. Now you have it in your reel.

39

Enhanced Magnetic Brakes

When it comes to magnetic brakes, the magnets on these brakes are stronger than magnets on earlier Abu Garcia Revos and Max reels. Having stronger magnets creates stronger electromagnetic fields of which makes control the spool better. But due to the lightness of the spool, you still need an educated thumb.

41

The Magnetic brakes also feature two modes; one for casting and the other for Pitching. Turning the dial towards Max helps with casting. Turning the dial clock wise to the bottom helps you with pitching. Upon removing of the side plate you will notice that there are more magnets at the casting setting area since more control is needed for casting, as compared to the pitching area.

43

Superlight Spool
The LTZ AE74-Racing comes with two spools a shallow spool that can take about 100 meters of 8lb lines and a super shallow spool that has only half of the shallow spools line capacity. Can someone call the mental institution please! This has gone from insane to total madness and I like madness.

45

So if you are into casting tiny little light lures then this reel is a must have. However, do note that the spool is not meant to be used on your battle with giant fishes. The spool is thin and light and as with all things, it too does have a limit. Treat it with respect and you will be ok.

47

How about the design? Well, if the spool design cues were to be use in Ferraris air cool engine system, the engine will probably not even get warm. Just the spool on the earlier Revo LTX, this one has got lots of holes. The more holes there are the lesser the weight. Holes equals good. Agree?

49

Bearings
This reel comes with 10 BF-XT bearing and 1 roller bearing giving the reel a smooth performance. Turning on the handle I hardly felt any weight on the spool and the rotations are smooth and light. However, if you want to soup it up further, you can replace them with Hedgehogs AIR bearings.

51

Missing Weight Factor

When you see a word like Racing printed on something, it usually means that that thing is fast and abnormally light. In the case of the Revo LTZ AE74-Racing (there you go again), it is actually light. Abu Garcia claims that it weighs only 163 grams.

53

My Thoughts
The Abu Garcia Revo LTZ AE74-Racing is like a high performance sports car. It comes fast but allows you the opportunity to tune and make it go even faster, even lighter, and even hotter. With aftermarket parts available this is indeed a reel for anglers who want something that makes the word common almost a banned word.

Clicker; makes noise as the fish takes your lines out.

55

There are basically two kinds of car owners. The ones that buy a car and keep it that way until owner and car part ways. Then there is the other that buys a car, turns it into a monster, and then force hell to break loose. If you fall under the second category, damn, you are going to love this reel. Unfortunately, this reel is not for everyone. I mean anyone can buy it but not ever one who buys it will be able to appreciate it. It is for the select few that fishes unlike the masses. The Abu Garcia Revo LTZ AE74Racing is not just a reel. It is a statement.

Zen Zagan Micro Stage Drop Flick

In A State Of Zen
By Philemon Foo
When it comes to zen, it is commonly used to refer to a state of total togetherness of body, mind, and soul of which simply means; complete and absolute peace. These rods that we are playing with are the Zagan Micro Stage Drop Flick by Zen.

61

How does one find complete and absolute peace in a rod? This time zen probably comes in the form or rather a state of total togetherness of power, strength, lightness, and sensitivity; a package that reminds me of some old Kung Fu ideology of which is graceful like a swan but still deadly.
63

A Different Type Of Blank

The Micro Stage some with a blank that is made of low resin high tenacity carbon of which gives it a more powerful blank. The rod comes with a backbone of about 70% and a slow taper tip that gives it the ability to flick out light jigs.

65

Quality Components
The Micro Stage comes with Fuji K Guides of which reduces friction between lines and guides. This quality Fuji guides also come with a strong frame that is resistant to corrosion of which is an important quality for a saltwater rod.

67

The reel seats on both rods are also Fuji of which is known to keep your reel in place with little or no movements. Having such high quality components on a rod gives the angler added confidence especially when playing the fish as he or she knows that these components will do their part well.

69

Balanced And Light

Weightlessness is the current name of the game. The other factor is balance. Magicians can levitate things and make stuff disappear. I too can do such forms of wizardry. I recently met a new angler who wrote to us for advice on fishing tackle and showed him a bit of magic as I explain rods to him.

71

Meeting him at a lake in Subang Jaya (Selangor, Malaysia), I asked this new comer if he believed in magic. He says for entertainment sake, yes. So I went on to tell him that I am a magician and I am about to defy the laws of gravity right before his very eyes. I picked up the Micro Stage that was in my car at the time and handed it to him. I asked him if he thought that the rod was light.
73

He did as the only rod that he has is one that was recently given to him by his uncle who has since stop fishing some 15 or so years back. He handed me the rod that his uncle gave him and it was a lot heavier being a fibreglass rod. He instantly felt the difference.

75

Then I told him that I am going to make this rod even lighter. I told him to point the rod tip straight out, forward, and parallel to the ground. He went Wow! The weight disappeared. There you go, a bit of magic. This is only possible with a well balanced rod. He tried it on his rod and of course it still felt a tonne. The Micro Stage Drop Flick is indeed one very well balanced and light rod, a rod that our new angler can very well use to impress his girlfriends father who is an angler. Oh, the only reason our new angler is taking up fishing is because he actually intends on impressing his girlfriends father.

77

Casting Ability
While the Micro Stage is a light jigging rod, it was the only rod (one casting and one spinning) that I had with me at that time. To teach our new angler to fish, I equipped the Micro Stage spinning rod with a spinning reel that was filled with 10lb lines and I secured a spoon without the hook, to it. I showed him how to cast by lightly flicking the spoon out using the tip. The Micro Stage has tip that is able to flick out 12g spoons with ease. I than got him to cast further the way we normally cast. After watching me do it a few times and getting it wrong about twice or three times, he was on a roll.

79

The Micro Stage has a tip that cast very well and will be superb when you want to cast out your micro jigs. The casting model has a rated jig weight of 8-20 grams while the spinning model is 10-30 grams. Both cast well within the weight range. Before I continue I have to make clear that I advised our new angler to look for a spinning rod and that the rod I showed him was a jigging rod and not so suited for casting in lakes the way we did, although it can be use for such a reason as I have shown him. Well, he wanted to impress his girlfriends father who is an angler. He will have to use appropriate equipment.

81

Back At The Lab

Although we didnt catch anything, it was still fun meeting up with a new angler and making a new friend. Anyway, back at the lab we put the Micro Stage through the standard tests. Pressure Test The Micro Stage has specified that the max drag these rods can take is 4kg or about 8.9lb. We started with the Micro Stage casting rod, securing a drag check meter to the line and gave it a few yanks. We then proceeded to increase the pressure.

83

I tightened the drag on the reel and continued to add more pressure on the rod while my lab assistant monitored the drag checker, looking at it via safety goggles (safety first). We managed to get the pressure all the way up to 8.9lb and that is when he gave the signal to stop signaling that the rod met its drag specification.

85

Next we tested the Micro Stage spinning rod of which also has a specified max drag weight of 4kg. This rod managed to hit almost 10lb which means that it passed the specified max drag rating.

87

My Verdict
Both Zen Zagan Micro Stage Drop Flick rods look good with carbon wraps, quality EVA, and quality Fuji components. Whats more important is that they met their specified claims. We had just one remark from one of the anglers that saw the rod who thought that the handle was about an inch too long but then again that was just one angler.

89

All in all I feel that the Micro Stage is a good rod and it has already proved itself out at sea. One thing to note is that this rod being a low resin carbon rod requires extra care. Whenever you travel with them, ensure that you keep them in a rod bag. If you are looking for a micro jig rod, check this out.

The Monster Truck Of Fishing : Ryobi Turbo

By Philemon Foo

mean business. What would your first reaction be if you were to see one closing up on you in your rear view mirror? Mine would be I better get the hell out of its way lest I end up coming one with the tarmac.

Monster trucks are tough, huge, and they really

95

This Means Business

The first time I laid eyes on the Ryobi Turbo, what came out of my mouth was, damn, this is one mean fishing machine. When I picked it up my initial thoughts were confirmed. I wasnt holding a refine, silky, hello beautiful kind of a reel. What I had in my hand is a monster. A monster that makes workhorses shit bricks. Pardon my language but damn.

97

New Realization
When I picked up the reel for the first time, I felt the weight instantly. How not too when all these while I have been picking up light reels. I was asking myself if the weight would be a put off. I mean, everyone is going light weight these days right? This reel moves in the other direct opposite direction. Truth is there are two extremes in our sport of fishing. Personally I have been playing at one extreme where we use light tackle to play big game. A lot of tackle in the market are made for this segment. In this segment we want things refine, smooth, sexy, with gears and bearings that are light and tough. But lightness seems to be the more important factor. That is why design houses like Hedgehog Studios are in business.

99

The other extreme is the one where they dont give a crap about lightness. Toughness, power, strength, and madness are all that matter. The Ryobi Power sits in this segment. The target game would be bottom monsters like giant groupers, large amberjacks, huge tunas, and probably the giant Humboldt squid. They dont give a rats ass about letting the fish run and things like that. Its a battle of muscles and intense bad language.

101

So let me make this really clear right now. If you are looking for a reel that is light, smooth, pretty, sexy, hot; then this is not your reel. But if you are the brute that dont give a crap, dont take crap from anyone, and getting pull overboard by a monster grouper makes your day; this reel is made for you.

103

Toughness All Around

Try twisting the stem of this reel and try bending the rotor... Hello, did you not read the earlier pages? It is pretty much useless trying to arm wrestle a two tonne giant. I have never arm wrestled a two tonne giant and I dont want to.

105

This reel is made tough. No way will it flex. The only way for it to flex is when you are in a battle with giant brute. Even then I doubt it will flex unless you yourself happen to be a two tonne giant. If so I seriously hope you accept my sincere apologies for the above statements and I still wont arm wrestle you.

107

Dual Speed
There are not many dual speed spinning reels in the market. Do we need a dual speed spinning reel? Well, do we need a car with more than a hundred horse power? Do we need cargo pants with plenty of pockets? Do we need strawberry ice cream since vanilla is the most eaten ice cream in the world? We may not need all these but we certainly want them.

109

High Gear Ratio

Press in the silver cylinder at the handle stem, turn the handle, and you feel the gear change. With that the rotation feels tighter. Now you are in high gear. The high gear ratio is 5.2:1. If you are twirling your eyes telling yourself no big deal, then you need to ponder this. Are monster trucks made to race Ferraris?

111

Low Gear Ratio

Press down the copper coloured switch at the handle stem, turn the handle, and you feel the gear change again. Now the rotation feels lighter. You are in low gear. The gear ratio now is 2.9:1. Yes it is slow but you need this. Imagine driving down hill without lower gears. Youre going to burn your breaks buddy.

113

Why Dual Speed?

Well, when you are out at sea bottom fishing and the fishing is slow. You tend to wish that your reel has a Ferrari engine to speed up the reeling in. This is normally when you reel up to check your bait. But when you are on to a serious brute, the low speed gearing gives you lots of cranking power. Now you have the better of both worlds.

115

Language Of Power
When you look at the Ryobi Turbo, everything says power. From the freaking thick bail wire to the industrial looking handle all the way to the drag knob; its power, power, power. Even the gearbox reminds me of the old American muscle cars; where its engine block sticks out of its bonnet and blocks the drivers view. Its not meant to be pretty but it says dont you freakin mess with me.

117

Lets Talk About Lines

So how much line can this monster take? If you are fishing with 50lb lines, this monster can hold up to 420 meters. If you are extracting a giant groupers tooth with 60lb lines, you can do it at 350 meters. If you intend to pull out that groupers jaw using 80 lb lines; that is possible at 270 meters. These measurements are based on PE lines.

119

Features At A Glance
Dual Gears (high gear ratio 5.2:1 & low gear ratio 2.9:1) 11 stainless steel bearings & 2 one way bearings Alloy body Two speed and power Max drag: 15kg Line: 0.55/300m Line winding (cm per handle turn): 60cm & 126cm Carbon drag washers Exchangeable Handle (left to right and vice versa) unavailable No anti-reverse switch PE Line Cap: 50lb-420m / 60lb-350m / 80lb 270m

121

Whats In My Mind?
I need more equipment in my lab. That is one. Oh, the reel. The Ryobi Turbo is seriously insane. Sorry, I meant insanely mad. I am not much of a monster truck person but if I have to fish with such a monster, I will choose the Ryobi Turbo. It does not cost as much as a Stella. It may be a bit heavier but like I said, when it comes to games at this extreme, who the #&%@ cares about weight.

123

The high gear ratio being 5.2:1 is fast comparing to other size 20000 reels (Stella is at 4.4:1) of which is a plus point to keep in mind. The gear ratio at 2.9:1 is plenty of cranking power. It is a super tough machine inside out. Just look at that thick shaft, it says I am tough. It is by no means a reel designed to attract you by beauty but if you are the James Dean type of person; executive by day, rebel by night, this is definitely your machine. If I were to have an appointment with some of the monsters of the deep and I am not allowed to use a winch and a harpoon, this will be my winch of choice. Note: The reel shown here is a prototype. The production reel may be of different color.

Daiwa Tatula Reel The Future Is Here

By Philemon Foo
The Daiwa Tatula reel (Type R) will
soon be reaching our shores (targeted November 2013). When Daiwa first launched the T3 reels with the T-Wing system I thought it was a good idea especially how the line flows more freely with less friction during the cast. However it wasnt a real hit as the earlier T models had a flip up front plate or what I called the bonnet; and that needed some convincing and getting used to. There were some amounts of scepticism within the angling community.

129

Daiwa Project T
Daiwa may not have won the battle but they kept their eyes on winning the war. With that in mind they embarked on improving on a good idea, the T-Wing system or TWS for short. So they set about with Project T and created the new Daiwa Tatula baitcasting reel. Looks like this time they hit gold. (Follow Project T on video.)

131

Daiwa Tatula Videos By Daiwa

Daiwa Tatula Reel
Daiwa created the Tatula reel to be one of the best reels in the bass circuit taking into account disadvantages and strengths of current baitcasting reels available. With that they redesigned the T-Wing System which makes casting more efficient with added distance but without the flip up front plate. Episode 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6r93gP1SPQ They also created what is called the AIR Rotation System of which is a new high precision gearing system that makes the Tatula a super smooth performer.

T-Wing System
When you cast using a baitcasting reel, there is some amount of friction caused by the line rubbing against the line guide. The further the line is from the line guide, the higher the friction due to the extreme angles. Many reel manufacturers have created different methods and systems to reduce this disadvantage. Daiwas answer to this is the T-Wing system. With a line guide that is designed like a T, what happens is that when you disengage the spool for the cast, the T guide moves down allowing the line to be at the top area of the T of which is the wide section. This wide section allows the line to flow freely as it leaves the spool reducing the extreme angles between the guide and the line thus reducing friction.

When you reengage your spool, the T pops back up forcing your line back into the narrow section of the T guide. Having the line back at the narrow section allows the T guide to lay lines properly on your spool as you retrieve (much like a normal line guide) your line. In short the benefits of the TWS are reduced friction (dramatically), increased casting distance, smoother cast, and faster drop rate. Genius!

AIR Rotation System
The AIR Rotation System is Daiwas answer to smoothness. Daiwa reels before this were smooth but you were always connected to the gearing which means that you will almost always feel the gears when you turn the handle. This is not necessary a bad thing but theyve done some improvements. The Tatulas AIR Rotation System is so smooth that you hardly feel the gears. Most anglers will love the AIR Rotation System as it feels extremely smooth. Hence the term AIR Rotation System

Longer Handles
The handle on the Tatula is longer at 90mm. This gives the Tatula added cranking power with higher line retrieval per turn. Well, some call this an illusion but so what? It actually does work. That is why big game reels have longer handles. Episode 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shJBbAzdIcU The Tatula uses the swept design for its handle. Many other reels use the swept design as it makes the reel feel more balanced when it is being cranked. Swept handles actually reduces wobbling.

Ultimate Tournament Drag (UTD)
The Ultimate Tournament Drag system found the earlier T3 (improved over other models UTD) models is in the Tatula as well. I am not sure if it is an improved version. The UTD is a drag design that increases the drag pressure while remaining smooth throughout a further pressure level. The maximum drag on the Tatula as claimed by Daiwa is 13.2lb. It is decent taking into consideration the fishing conditions today.

Featuring MagForce Z Brakes

The Tatula features Daiwas latest magnetic braking system called the MagForce Z. This latest magnetic braking system of Daiwas or anti backlash control gives you a wider range of adjustments as compared to older systems, with a greater control. How it works is at the start of the cast, the spools inductor cup is retracted from the magnets removing all magnetic effect on the spool thus giving you a super fast start-up. As the spool reaches the max speed, the inductor cup automatically goes into the gap between the magnets and is now using the effectiveness of the magnets to control the spool. As the spool begins to slow down, the inductor cup retracts to its original position allowing the spool to spin longer without the magnetic forces. This gives you better distance but an educated thumb is needed.

Swage Fighting Belt

Innovation Overdrive
By Philemon Foo
We see a lot of innovation in rods,

Introducin

reels, lines, lures, etc. Recently I visited a tackle store (Kepong Tackle) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and saw what must be one of the best innovations in fighting belts to date. Being a big game angler, I have my reservations when it comes to fighting belts. I hardly use them these days as I find them uncomfortable to use and somewhat of a hindrance. However, swage took these discomforts to mind and created some of the nicest looking and comfortable to use fighting belts.

155

Lightweight
With everything else going light, it makes perfect sense for fighting belts to join the party. After all, a heavy fighting belt is uncomfortable and can sometimes feel like your pants is about to drop of which is not a comfortable feeling especially when you are in battle with a giant brute. The Swage fighting belt feels light which is great because when you are fighting a fish, you do not want to be fighting your fighting belt as well.

157

Tough And Yet Flexible

Most fighting belts are sturdy of which is good. However, there is one drawback with a sturdy fighting belt. While playing the fish, a sturdy fighting belt can sometimes be quite an irritant especially when it doesnt stay in place and starts to move about, usually upwards.

159

Swage has eliminated this problem somewhat by making its belts tough and yet flexible. The flexibility of the swage fighting belt allows it to flex according to your bodys movement keeping it in position while you play your fish. This allows you to focus on your battle and not the movement of the fighting belt.

161

No More Slippage
Have you ever had your rod butt slip off your fighting belt while you were fighting a hard fighting fish? Most anglers have but Swage has eliminated this problem by using what they call a ball and socket designed gimbal. I tested this at all angles that I can think off and the rod held on securely. We even tried hitting it out and the rod just sat in place. This is just great especially when you do not have to worry about your rod slipping off and can focus on the fight.

163

Tougher Than Nails

All these are great but just how tough is the Swage fighting belt? It has been tested to a breaking strength of 300kg and a crushing pressure of 100kg (tested by manufacturer). It has also a temperature range of -50 to +50 centigrade. The manufacturer has also put the fighting belt through 2000 hours of UV protection tests and saltwater corrosion tests, of which the belts survived with flying colors. Tougher than nails? With that sort of test, nails would have rusted but the Swage fighting belt survived.

165

Modern Design And Cosmetics

When it comes to choosing a product, cosmetics do influence us. Swage fighting belts come in all sorts of colors. If youre the jungle hunter type, there are camo colors to choose from. If you are the happy go lucky hippie sort, there are bright colors that may tickle your fancy. If youre like me, the sporty type, there are various carbon fibre colors to choose from.

167

I So Want One
Well, I dont normally think much about fighting belts. In fact I have a few fighting belts sitting at home some of which are still unused. In all honesty, I would never have picked up the Swage fighting belt if my friend who was with me had not pointed it out to me. Now I want one. Not just any one but the carbon fibre designed one. That is because I am somewhat crazy over carbon fibre and I like what I saw and felt in the Swage fighting belt. If you are in the market for a fighting belt, you seriously need to take a look at Swage fighting belts. They look great, gives you comfort and confidence, and you dont have to curse yourself for being penny smart and pound foolish.

TITANIUM FISHING EQUIPMENT

By Philemon Foo
The Greatest Innovation in the Sportfishing IndustrySince The 1970s Affordable Solid Military Grade Titanium Equipment.
Like every other industry, players in the fishing industry have to be innovative and smart in order to survive and grow. It is a tough industry with brands constantly innovating products spending millions to come out with something better or something special.

The Fortitude Fishing Inc.

While most fishing tackle companies are classified as sporting goods companies, the Fortitude Fishing Inc. caught our attention first for having a reel that we really like and second for being classified as a technology company within the realms of the fishing industry. They have been selected in 2011 as a Tech company to watch. Click this if you dont believe http://ct.typepad. com/c2w/2011/11/fortitude-fishing-inc-.html

171

The Founder
The Fortitude Fishing Inc. is founded by David Lamoureux who is also the CEO who has been a portfolio manager and derivatives trader specializing in futures and options. It was from here that he moved into the specialty metal industry with his partners and formed a company called Amalgamated Titanium Intl Corp. Together with his partners he has developed patents, products, and a proprietary titanium technology. This means that David knows his metal especially titanium really well and who better to develop titanium reels other than his company and him.

173

There is more to David. He is also an angler, a pioneer in fact, who once single-headedly demolished a world record with a 157 pound Bluefin Tuna on a solo kayaking mission, miles off the shore of Cape Cod in the Atlantic Ocean. His accomplishments have been documented in the New York Times, the wall Street Journal, Popular Mechanics, and also various fishing magazines. If you think that is all, you are wrong. David also filmed an episode on Discovery Channels Animal Planet called Off The Hook: Extreme Catches which is scheduled to Air in summer this year, 2013. If you have seen the episode then you will probably know who David is.

175

TAA: How long have you been fishing? DL: I have been fishing my whole life. I remember my father taking me freshwater fishing when I was 3 years old and I caught a small sunfish. Thats 43 years. TAA: What type of fishing do you enjoy the most? DL: I love all types of fishing but I like big game fishing on light tackle the most. TAA: I understand that you were a portfolio manager and a derivatives trader specializing in futures and options. What motivated you to move into the fishing industry? DL: More specifically, I was a commodities trader who moved into the specialty metals business after developing a proprietary cost effective titanium technology with my partners. The fishing industry was one of our first choices to enter because titanium is so applicable to the market. In other words, there was a dire need for higher quality and cost effective titanium equipment due to it being impervious-tocorrosion in salt water, stronger and lighter for handheld tools (fishing equipment) as well as lifetime durability. I also love fishing so this aspect of my career doesnt even seem like work. The big game fishing was something I was doing which led to the happy marriage of the two things. I was finally able to devote more time to something I absolutely love.

An Interview With Dave (David Lamoureux)

We recently did an interview with Dave about his fishing endeavours, his company, and his plans for Asia; and this is what he had to say... The Asian Angler (TAA) David Lamoureux (DL)

177

TAA: Did you design fishing products such as the Fortitude Titanium reel before or after you moved into the fishing industry? DL: I had designed custom titanium fishing products for myself and some friends prior to formally entering the fishing industry. My unique style of fishing requires a significant amount of custom equipment and none of the reels I bought off the shelf could either meet or stand up to my needs. However, the exquisite functionality of the titanium products is also due to my engineering team and not solely me. TAA: Do share with us a bit about your company; how you started? DL: My partners and I developed a proprietary cost effective titanium technology which allows us to produce products at a similar price to inferior aluminum and steel. Following that we researched numerous industries for synergies and applicability and the sportfishing industry was one of 4 that we subsequently entered. The others are petroleum, arms and the marine industries under Amalgamated Titanium International Corporation. TAA: I like the Titanium spinning reel in particular because of its classic design cues but what prompted you to choose a classic reel design (instead of a modern sporty design) and modernize it with military grade titanium? DL: Form and function as it pertains to our proprietary titanium technology was the driving force. Visual aesthetics was a secondary objective. We have incorporated so much technology inside the reel that we wanted to insure that it worked flawlessly. This is achieved through a simplified design structure. In essence, we want our reels to last a persons entire lifetime. TAA: Most manufacturers these days use aircraft grade titanium on their reels. Why use military grade titanium?

DL: Aircraft grade is based on military specifications but we are in the business of making hand-held tools (fishing equipment) that are meant to be used at sea level and not at 30,000 feet in the air. TAA: What is the one major selling point that puts the Fortitude Titanium reel above other reels in the market? DL: It unquestionably has the best cost-to-quality-ratio of any top tier reel on the market, especially when you consider that it is half the cost of other top tier reels which are made of inferior aluminum, steel and plastic. Not to mention, the life time warranty! TAA: What are your plans for the Asian region? DL: We are currently looking to develop relationship to have the reel available in Asia by early 2014. The goal is to establish top flight distribution partnerships in the market. The focus will remain on making affordable titanium fishing products for users around the globe. TAA: You have achieved a lot like smashing the 157 pound Bluefin tuna record on a solo kayaking trip, doing episodes on TV channels such as Discovery Channels Animal Planet, and more; whats next on your list? DL: The company and I have begun to work with some exciting fishing TV shows although I cannotdisclose which ones at this point. Personally however, I am looking forward to landing some record fish on film next summer from the kayak. In particular, I hope to land a Bluefin in the 300-400 pound range (135kg-180kg). TAA: Thank you very much for your time David and we wish you all the best.

Fortitude Titanium Reel

While there are a few reels that uses titanium such as a titanium frame and body but with copper gears, and stainless steel ball bearings, etc.; the Fortitude Titanium reel is made out of titanium inside out. Even the springs and ball bearings are titanium.

Eye Catching
The first thing that caught my eye is the design of the Titanium reel. Being someone that loves classic reels, the design caught pushed the right buttons and I automatically gravitated towards it. I do have reels in my collection that look like this but theyre all classics and made up of old school materials of which were high-tech during their era.

181

A Reel Spool Of Holes

The other thing that caught my eye is the amount of holes that the reel has and with that, I meant the spool and rotor. Holes not only create a beautiful visual effect. They also add on to the weight loss factor. Every hole you see equals to a certain amount of weight removed.

Military Grade Titanium

While most brands talk about aircraft grade titanium being used in their products, the Fortitude Titanium reel uses military grade solid titanium. I am not sure what the difference is but Titanium is a tough metal that is light and is resistant to saltwater of which makes it a good reel for saltwater applications.

183

Modular Gear Box Assembly

This is another thing I like about the Fortitude Titanium reel. This gear box assembly allows for simple and fast repair. All you have to do is to remove the gear box and pop in a new one. Imagine being on a boat trip and having something go wrong inside your reel. Easy, just change the darn thing there and then.

185

Other Features
Affordable titanium technology 200% stronger than stainless steel 45% lighter than stainless steel Impervious to corrosion Internal and external titanium parts Modular gear housing 15 titanium ball bearings Ultra smooth action Powerful and smooth drag Inheritable durability Lifetime warranty Gear ratio (size 6000 4:1 / size 4000 & 5000 5:1)

187

My Thoughts
I love the classic design and clean looks. I love the holes on the spool and the rotor. I like the idea of the Modular Gear Box Assembly making maintenance easy. I like tough and I certainly do like light weight. It does remind me very much of another reel call Van Staal but heck this is full on Titanium. However, I must note that I do not own nor have I used this reel and one of the things that I am not sure does indeed lie within the gear box. There is a reason why reel manufacturers use different metals for gears (one softer and one harder). I am not sure how putting two strong metals of the same type in the ring and having them punish each other will play out. Who knows, perhaps Fortitude indeed has the winning formula.

While most anglers are more than happy with off the shelve rods built by rod factories, there are some who prefer to have a rod built specifically for them and they look for their favourite rod builder.
191

Custom

There are a few rod builders in Malaysia and Singapore but when it comes to the well known and the famous, there are even fewer. In this personality segment I hereby introduce a close long time friend of mine who has been building customize rods as well as repairing rods and reels for longer than I can remember.

193

When it comes to customize rod building, one of the names that tend to pop up often is Kok Ming. The first time I met him probably some 10 to 12 years back or so, he was operating his rod building workshop at Tightlines a shop owned by Uncle Bob who himself is a fishing legend in this here parts. I used to hang out at his workshop and watch him at work intrigued by the mountains of effort he puts into building a rod for someone else. One can easily tell when someone is doing a job out of force or out of passion. When it comes to Kok Ming it is definitely passion.

195

Being a very experience angler himself, Kok Ming uses his vast experience as an angler and rod builder to help ascertain and advise individual anglers on what would suit their style of fishing best. Why not since the rod is customized to suit him or her and no one else. He not only share his valuable knowledge with friends and customers, he has also advised and shared his knowledge with international fishing tackle companies the likes of Pure Fishing, the worlds largest fishing tackle company, on certain rods to help ensure that the rods built would be suitable for their target markets.

197

Kok Ming has built rods for some of the more famous anglers in Malaysia and Singapore the likes of Uncle Bob, Major Ismail, etc. He not only builds rods for anglers in Malaysia and Singapore. He also has customers all the way from Thailand to Denmark. So if you are itching for a rod made just for you, or if have a reel or rod that needs to be fixed; you may want to give Kok Ming a call.

Knowledge Wise
Understanding Fishing Rods Part 5 Making Sense Of It: Lure Weight
By Philemon Foo

When you look at fishing rods,

one of the items you will notice is lure weight or lure Wt. It could read something like lure wt. 1/4 to 5/8oz for example. What this term simply means is the range of lure weights that the rod is made to cast. Well, why is understanding this important?

Lure 1/4-3/4 oz as in the picture.

201

Mechanics Of Casting
When you cast your lure or bait it is not just how hard you push the rod that determines the efficiency of your cast. It is also not just momentum or all the other universal laws that determines the efficiency of your cast. The rod plays an important part. For this article we will just stick with the word bait that covers both artificial and natural. When you swing the rod backward and then forward again to cast out your bait what happens is this. First you build momentum and because your bait or lure weighs a certain weight, it flexes the rod tip backwards into an arch as it loads up.

203

What happens next is that the rod tip straightens all the way back unloading the stored energy somewhat like a slingshot, as it shoots your bait forward. The faster the rod tip recovers or rather springs back to its original position, the higher the energy transferred to the bait.

205

The Weight Factor

Understanding what happens to your rod during the cast will help you understand why knowing your rods lure weight and working with it is important. How efficient your rod is at casting out or shooting out your bait depends on the weight of the bait. Using a bait that is too light for your rod spoils the cast. If the bait is too light, it will not be able to flex or load the rod tip and thus does not build enough energy at the rod tip to shoot out the bait. The amount of energy transferred to your bait is too little for an efficient cast. Try casting out a weightless fly on an 8-20lb fast action rod with 10lb lines and you will understand what I mean. Your fly would probably be going all over the place not far from you yet far from your targeted area. A fly is too light to be cast out and thus fly anglers use weighted lines to push the fly out.

207

Using a bait too heavy on the other hand flexes the rod tip and the tip does build energy but because of the bait being too heavy, the energy that the tip has built cannot be release efficiently. The weight of the bait slows down the spring-back or recoil of the rod tip to its original position thus wasting all that stored energy. It is like putting a 660cc engine into an old Volvo 740GL. It moves the Volvo but you will not be going places as efficiently as a 2400cc engine would, and the fuel consumption on the little 660 engine will be a lot higher.

209

It is best to follow the range of lure weights that your rod is designed to handle. Even then there is that one sweet magical weight within the said range that is the best lure weight to use. Casting lures of that weight is like driving a Ferrari on the Autobahn with no cars around (no, I havent done this but I would love to). The other problem with casting too heavy a bait for long periods of time is that you wear out your rod tip. Your rod tip becomes weaker from the constant stress of trying to push out a piece of bait that is too heavy for it to manage.

211

Other Factors
Let us slightly step off topic a wee bit. When it comes down to casting there is more to it. How efficient your cast is also depends on other factors other than your rod and lure weight. These factors include your line type and condition, line diameter, efficiency of your reel, reel settings, condition of your rod guides, design of your lure, your casting abilities, etc.

213

Sometimes it is impossible to get everything right (unless you can control the weather). The best thing you can do is to work with what you have got with you and do the best possible cast that you can possibly do.

Summary
Lure weight basically gives you an idea of the best lure weights to use for a certain rod. Too light a bait and you will have a tough time casting it out. Too heavy a bait and your rod will not be able to get it out efficiently.

Fishing With Soft Plastics: Part 4

Presentation Methods: Paddle Tails
By Philemon Foo

In previous issues we took a look at some of

the more common soft plastics available in the market and we touched on some of the ways to rig them. We also touch very generally on presentation and how fishing soft plastics require some use of imagination.
217

Slim Section

Fan or paddle

Understanding Paddle Tails

When you look at paddle tail soft plastics you will notice that the body is thick and then it slims down towards the tail section and it fans out at the tail. This design allows the body of the bait to remain rigid while the tail goes wagging. It simulates the movement of a fish.
219

Ribbed section for added vibration

There are also some differences in body designs. Some paddle tail designs come with flat and smooth body and some come ribbed. The ribbed designed body emits more vibration underwater with hopes of attracting the attention of fishes.
221

These days your choices of paddle tail plastics are a lot. The favourites are the ones that look realistic with scale designs and drawings, as well as shiny 3D eyes. Then there are those without the realistic designs and drawing and eyes. You could use a jig hook with eyes to make them look more realistic.

223

Presentations
In general, the presentation of soft plastics have always been said to be slow. Yes, this is a common and proven method and rule of thumb. But I am one who believes that rules are meant to be broken sometimes and the rule of thumb for softies is one that has been broken by quite a few anglers especially when the rule of thumb fails and one goes creative. The paddle tail soft plastics can be presented in many ways of which of course include slow and slow retrieves. The versatility of this design lay in its ability of wag its tail. It can be presented as a panicking fish, dying or injured fish, leisurely swimming fish, stationary fish, etc.

225

Slow Retrieve
This presentation style requires you to slowly retrieve your paddle tail at a very slow and constant speed just enough to keep it swimming at certain water depth. Your lure will look like a fish that is leisurely swimming about without a care in the world. Recommended for use at lakes and ponds with still and shallow waters, you can apply this method just beside weedy areas, along the banks, or just to fan an area. In waters with slight currents, you may need to increase your retrieval speed.

Slow retrieve of paddle tail baits allows the tail to waggle and attract fish.

227

Retrieve And Pause

Also known as wind and stop or burn and kill as the Aussies call it. This presentation style mimics the movement of a panicking fish. Do about three to four rotations of your reel and then pause. What happens is that when you are retrieving your line the lure swims upwards. When you pause it heads back down. Always pause until you feel you lure touch the bottom. Most hits occur during the pause when the lure drops. Recommended for use at areas with waters that are not too deep. About a foot to 8 feet of water will be ideal. Can be used at weedy areas, sandy beaches, lakes, ponds, canals, etc. where underwater currents are very minimal to nonexistent. Pause

Pause

Ground

229

1. Jerk upwards

Rod Tip

Jerk And Drop

This presentation style mimics a sick fish that is nearing the end of its life. Jerk the rod tip upwards and drop your rod tip. Hold or pause at that position for about three of four seconds. Give it another jerk and drop again. Hold or pause for three or four seconds. Repeat these steps. What happens is that when you jerk, you actually dart the fish upwards. Dropping the rod will allow the fish to drop to the bottom. Pause is when the fish looks like a dead or very close to dying fish. This method actually attracts fishes that are on the lookout for an easy meal (opportunists). Recommended for use at waters that are still such as a lake or pond where currents are nonexistent. Fishes tend to hit it on the drop. Some fishes also tend to hit the soft plastic bait while it is sitting at the bottom.

2. Drop tip

Drop

Jerk Jerk Jerk

Pause

Pause
231

The Bounce
This presentation style mimics a feeding fish that is searching the bottom for food. Jerk the rod tip slightly upwards. The idea is to have the paddle tail hop off the ground about an inch and go back down to the ground. Imagine a fish searching the bottom. Recommended for use at all types of waters such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, flats, etc. The best conditions are areas with sandy bottoms and slight currents. You will need to match the size of the paddle tail and jig hook weight, to the currents. You want to be able to have the paddle tail abit sit at the bottom with is tail pointed upwards at about 45 degrees angle wiggling in the currents.

Ground

Pause for a few seconds

Pause for a few seconds

233

Swimming About Foliage

Rigged wheedles, paddles tails can be used in weedy areas as well. You can swim your paddle tail about weeds, inside the weedy areas, even around lily pads and various vegetation. Paddle tails can also be made to look like a fish eating or checking out the stems of these vegetation.

235

Get creative when you fish soft plastics and create your own presentation methods. The soft plastic lure is in reality just a tool. How effective it is depends on how you use them. I have twitch them hard, play them fast (but controlled), added them to spinners and spoons (trailers), and used them without additional weights; and they have caught fish. So get creative and go catch that fish.

Visiting Paradises
By Philemon Foo
Well, we are now celebrating our first

Anglers Paradise

anniversary and being an anglers lifestyle magazine, we have visited quite a few resorts. While some didnt make the cut and did not get published those that did made it because they met a certain requirement or standards that we have in place. We have been asked how we determined if a resort or guesthouse passes our required standards or if we are paid to feature them. No, we have not been paid to feature them. In fact we do not get paid at all except for the resort covering our some of our cost.

239

We take into consideration a few factors such as condition of the resort (especially rooms, facilities, etc.), quality of service rendered, quality of the facilities available, and lots more; and balance them over the price or cost of the stay. This helps ensure that you are getting your moneys worth. Not all resorts that we have visited made it to the magazine but we do not just leave it at that. We actually highlight to the management why they did not make it together with a detailed property inspection report on whats lacking and where to improve together with some recommendations.

241

What Rights Do We Have To Do So?

Before spending years in the fishing industry as a product designer, developer, specialist, and marketer; I actually spent years as a hotelier managing different sections of various resorts. With first hand hotel experience as well as a traveler, I see things from both perspectives as a guest as well as a resorts managements point of view.

The room quality also stood out Fishes Available From The Balc with better maintenance and attention to detail. The fishes that paid us a brief visit we aging 400g to about 1kg but still they w species that were available are groupe snappers (white variety), and longtom

Walking along the boardwalk to the Pa that is situated near the chalet, at nigh I didnt spend a lot of time there due to anything (I am on holiday) and caught fin salmon) of about 1kg each, caught Gulp! Shrimp.
The Premier Chalet On Water is fantastic. Lovely view of the sea and the serene sound of waves while you laze around the balcony with your bait and line in the water waiting for a fish to take the bait.

Belum Rainforest Resort

The Belum Rainforest Resort made it to our magazine back in November 2012. They were full during our stay and we were quite lucky to get a room. I had friends over from Hong Kong and USA there with me during my stay. We were fishing at Belum and this is the most comfortable resort to lay our tired bodies in after a tiring day out on the water.

251

In all honesty, the Belum Rainforest Resort barely made it. The rooms are great. We really loved the rooms. Food choices were really poor and service at the restaurant was slow, but hats off to one of the waiters who took it upon himself to ensure that we had good food during our stay.

253

I cannot remember his name but he actually drove all the way into town to get us the food that we wanted including a meal of ikan billis that my American friend was craving for. The kitchen team also cooked up a few dishes that were not in the menu, upon our request, and that made the experience so much better.

255

Credit goes to Housekeeping for keeping our rooms neat and cosy. A bigger credit goes to that one particular waiter who went to town and got us our wonderful dinner as well as the kitchen team for cooking us a meal that wasnt in the menu. These are the little things that made our stay a very nice one. http://www.theasianangler.com/ issues/nov2012/index.html

257

Nipah Guesthouse, Pangkor Island

When it comes to budget travel, no other guesthouse that I have been to even comes close to the hospitality and service given. We actually visited Nipah Guesthouse right after our stay at a four star resort and we found this place to be better. This speaks volumes on the experience that we had.

259

Unlike other guesthouses, Nipah Guesthouse showered us with a very personalized service. The owners are friendly and very accommodating. We even got to have our meals with horn-bills at the dining area. The rooms are really clean and comfortable. What I really miss is the baked beans specialty cooked by Anuar.

261

There is nothing not to like about the Nipah Guesthouse. Service is fantastic, rooms are clean and cosy, food is good although you have to prepare other meals on your own, and the experience is the best I have had so far even compared to those of star rated hotels and resorts. Credit goes to the owners (Anuar & Alicia) and their team. This is by far the best guesthouse we stayed in. http://www.theasianangler.com/ issues/dec2012/lo/index.html

Swiss Garden Golf & Spa Damai Laut

We featured the Swiss Garden Golf & Spa Resort, Damai Laut, in our January 2013 issue. It barely made it to electronic print but it did as it sits on a good location especially for anglers. What we liked about this resort is the location of which is near Pulau Sembilan (Nine Islands), Pangkor Island, Jarak Island, etc. If you do not want to spend on a boat trip, there are a few places that you can fish at within the resort.

265

The resort also offers lots of fun activities for children and the staffs manning these activities are a friendly lot. Food is good too but a bit on the pricy side. What we didnt like is the maintenance and housekeeping of which is quite slow. http://www.theasianangler. com/issues/jan2013/lo/index. html#/62-63/

267

Clearwater Sanctuary, Perak

Most anglers in the Peninsular Malaysia would have probably heard of the Clearwater Sanctuary Resort in Perak. This is one of the resorts that I like a lot too. As an angler what I like is that I get to fish from the balcony of the chalet and the fishing is quite good.

269

Should I opt to fish from a boat or scanoe, I can rent one at the fishing club house, or I could also just bring my own boat and thruster and fish at one of the few lakes within the grounds of the resort. Fishing can be quite satisfying if you know where to fish at. There are also lots of facilities for the family such as tennis, kids club, swimming pool, gymnasium, etc. Even golfers get to go for a game or two at its renowned golf course. There is plenty of wildlife to explore around its grounds. Weve seen monitor lizards, otters, and even came face to face with a wild boar.

271

The rooms are lovely but dated which I dont mind for the price. The balconies definitely needed some maintenance work but they did not fall apart during my visits. Other than that, I have no complains about the rooms that I have stayed at.

273

Whats lacking is the quality of food provided and the maintenance of the area. Another thing that I complained about is the cleanliness of the swimming pool. Anyway, the management have decided to close the resort for maintenance and when they reopen, I will be visiting them again. http://www.theasianangler. com/issues/feb2013/lo/index. html#/76-77/

275

Payung Guesthouse, Cherating

The Payung guesthouse in Cherating offered us a village like experience. What I like about the place is that it is rustic, and we got to stay in a little Kampung House (village house) all to ourselves. The air-conditioning (something I cannot live without) worked well to keep the place cool.

277

The area also had a green and nature theme which is lovely. It actually gives you the experience of being part of a village community where other guests are also friendly and some of them actually stay there for weeks surfing the surfs of the Cherating beach.

279

As an angler I like the location where I can fish at the beach doing surfcasting or at the river for estuarine fishes. Points were deducted for housekeeping as our rooms were a bit dusty and having a dusty mosquito net on top of our bed didnt go well with my sensitive nose. The other issue was mosquitoes. Other than those, the place was great. http://www.theasianangler. com/issues/mar2013/lo/index. html#/150-151/

281

Laguna Resort, Phuket, Thailand

The Laguna Resort in Phuket was indeed an experience like none other. We were treated like kings the minute we arrived at the airport where their staffs met us and brought us to the waiting area where we were given a warm towel and water.

283

Next we were chauffeured to the resort in a very classy MPV with built in sofas, instead of normal car seats, with more water and towels, and a friendly driver. Everything was first class all the way and the suites were indeed built with attention to detail. The facilities were also first class like the boat rides, the large swimming pool, fishing pond (average), etc. Well, they have some lows too such as the slow service by the food and beverage team.

285

It cost a bomb to stay there but it is worth every penny as even the slow service rendered by the food and beverage team can be forgiven when the superb food appears in front of you. http://www.theasianangler. com/issues/apr2013/lo/index. html#/72-73/

287

Cherengin Hills Resort, Janda Baik

In June 2013 we featured Cherengin Hills Resort in Janda Baik. What I like about Cherengin Hills Resort is the cosy room with superb air conditioning, the food (local fair) is amongst the best and I have driven all the way there just to enjoy a meal, and the cosy atmosphere.

289

Although the resort itself does not have a place for anglers to wet their lines, a mere few minutes drive away and you will be casting for river fishes. The cool mountain streams are a good place to relax as well.

291

I give credit to the chef for his ability to cook-up some of the best local fair. I have been back there with friends and all of them have given their thumbs up. http://www.theasianangler. com/issues/june2013/lo/index.html#/176-177/

293

Avillion Port Dickson

Another one of my favourite resorts is the Avillion in Port Dickson. I love their rooms especially the bathroom where one can opt to fish from while taking a bath or while soaking in the tub. We stayed at one of the chalets on the water and fishing from the chalets balcony was a lot of fun.

295

The main catches were crabs and that was a new experience for my kid. The service rendered by the recreation team was superb. They sent bait to our room at night (a time we agreed on), they brought a crab cage for us to use, etc.

297

There is a lot to do like kayaking, paddle boating on the Waterbee, tennis, gym, games room, 24 hours swimming pool, etc. There are even peacocks roaming the grounds, something you dont often see in resorts.

299

Where they lost points are the slow service at the restaurants and poor housekeeping where we had bird droppings on the balcony throughout our entire stay and they remained there. Still, the Avillion Port Dickson offers a fantastic experience and lovely place to stay. http://www.theasianangler.com/ issues/jul2013/index.html#162163

Kampung Air Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort

The Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort is actually a resort that features a water theme park of which was closed and undergoing some maintenance during our visit, a huge lake where fishing can be done, an Eco Park, and an island of which is a sanctuary for Orang Hutans.

303

The Kampung Air suites are indeed a class of its own. It is luxurious with many luxuries such as a built in Jacuzzi, nice family hall, superb rooms, and a nice relaxing balcony. Fishing from the balcony is nice too with lots of fish to play with.

305

The Eco Park and Orang Hutan Island are both enjoyable and attractions that should not be missed. The water park on the other hand is really quite dated and was closed for maintenance. Food at the Le Lac Cafe is not bad.

307

I cannot comment on the other accommodations available but if you intend to holiday at Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort, I highly recommend the Kampung Air Chalets / suites. http://www.theasianangler. com/issues/aug2013/index. html#186-187

309

Well, we have not been travelling much but we will do so again and bring you more resorts where you can bring your family to for a vacation and still enjoy your sport of fishing without spending too much time away from your family.
