The journey toward Business Leadership Hawaii 2009 is under way and we
at PBN hope this guide helps your nomination process move smoothly.

Here are a few suggestions on how to quickly and effectively prepare a nomination.

1. After you have selected the appropriate category or categories for your
nominee, carefully review the questions under the “goal of the award” section.
Judges look for the nominations to cover each of the points.

award goals.
3. Remember, the whole nomination (not including the letters of support and a
résumé, where appropriate) is only two or three pages in length.
4. Three categories require a statement of revenue – Best in Business I and II
and Innovative Company of the Year. No other financial information is needed,
although we do ask you to indicate whether the company was profitable in at
least two of the last three years. Only judges see the revenue information and it’s
destroyed after the judging. (You can provide more information if you wish and it
also will be treated confidentially.)
5. If you would like to review actual nominations from previous years, please
contact Doreen Tavares at PBN, 955-8074 or dtavares@bizjournals.com. We’ll
send you a CD and ask only that you treat the nomination in a confidential
manner.
6. Still need help? Several public relations professionals in Honolulu are willing
to provide up to an hour of assistance at no cost. After that, the help will shift to
an hourly fee basis. Call Doreen for more information.

1. What is Business Leadership Hawaii?
Business Leadership Hawaii is one of five business-
recognition events held throughout the year by Pacific
Business News. It was developed by PBN and support-
ing sponsors to recognize leadership, innovation and
good business practices. The first BLH was in 2002.
2. Who are the sponsors and how
are they involved?
American Savings Bank is the lead or platinum sponsor.
Hawaii Pacific University, Cades Schutte and Hawaii
Pacific Health are gold sponsors. These sponsors work
on planning Business Leadership Hawaii starting early
each year. They assist in promotion and facilitation of the
nomination process. Sponsors cannot be considered for
nomination and have no part in judging for the six com-
petitive categories.
3. When and where will the dinner awards
event occur?
Business Leadership Hawaii will take place the evening
of Thursday, November 12, in the Molokai/Lanai Ball-
rooms at the Sheraton Waikiki.
4. What are the award categories?
A. Best in Business, Division I, for businesses
with more than 100 employees.
B. Best in Business, Division II, for businesses
with fewer than 100 employees.
C. American Savings Bank Business Leader of the
Year, honoring an individual who has made a
significant difference in Hawaii business.
D. Innovative Company of the Year, for companies
out of the box and on the edge — and not just
a tech company, either.
E. Community Spirit honors a company that made
significant community contributions, especially
during the last 12-18 months.
F . The Cades Schutte - The Cades Foundation
Nonprofit Leadership, for not-for-profit
organizations providing community impact
and leadership.
5. Who can nominate?
Anyone can nominate. People preparing the nomina-
tion material often have a business relationship with the

company or individual being nominated. Self-nomina-
tions are welcomed and encouraged.
6. Are the names of the nominators released?
What about the names of people or
companies nominated but not finalists?
The names of nominators are not made public at any
point in the process not even to the judges. The names
of companies, nonprofits and individuals nominated
but not finalists are not released.
7. Are nominees involved in the nomination
process?
Nominators usually first discuss the possibility of a
nomination with the company, nonprofit or individual.
If approval is given, the nominee typically helps provide
relevant data and information.
8. What about the letters of support?
Each nomination is required to have two letters of
support expanding on the nomination. They provide a
personal touch to the nomination and examples of how
the individual, company or nonprofit has fulfilled the
expectations for the category.
9. What do the judges look for?
In every category, judges are looking for examples of
leadership, especially during the last 12-18 months. The
nominations typically reflect good business practices,
innovation, work force engagement and customer com-
mitment. The letters of support carry a lot of weight
with judges.
10. How do people or companies being
nominated find out if they are a finalist?
About 45 days before the Business Leadership Hawaii
awards dinner, all finalists are notified by mail. Letters
also are sent to those nominated but not among the
finalists.
11. What are the benefits to the people
preparing the nominations?
Those doing the nominating tell us that it has helped
establish an even stronger business bond between them
and the nominee and their company or organization. It
is an honor for a company, nonprofit or individual just
to be nominated.

12. What are the benefits to the
finalists and winners?
At the end of this nomination guide, several people who
were finalists or winners tell about the benefits. The
common theme is the honor and recognition that goes
to the participating company or nonprofit or individual.
It’s become a wonderful way to share pride in the work-
place.
13. How many nominations were received in the
first seven years?
More than 460 individuals, companies and nonprofits
have been nominated.
14. Nominations for Best in Business Division I,
Best in Business Division II, Innovative Company
and The Cades Foundation Nonprofit Leadership
awards require some financial information. Who
sees that information and what happens to it?
The financial information is seen only by the person
processing the nomination and the judges. It is not
released publicly and is not available to any other PBN
staff. The financial information is destroyed after the
judging is complete. If requested, alternate arrangements
on the financial information may be worked out. In
those cases, the nominee works with a CPA firm to pre-
pare a confidential summary of financial performance.
15. Who are the judges?
Last year, there were five judges representing a wide
range of business leadership experience:

We again will have a panel with similar credentials.
16. Will PBN help with the nominations?
PBN staff will answer questions you have at any point
in the nomination process. However, we cannot assist in
writing the nomination or in reviewing it prior to sub-
mission. Several public relations firms also have offered
up to one hour of assistance at no charge.
17. What is the nomination and events
timetable?
Here is a tentative outline:
• Nominations open on June 12.
They will close on August 21.
• Judging will be in mid-September.
• The awards dinner is Thursday, November 12.
18. What happens on the night of the event?
The reception starts with no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m.
and dinner at 6:45 p.m. The Lifetime Achievement
Award is presented before dinner. After dinner, videos
of the finalists in each of the six categories are presented
and the winners are announced. The program ends at
about 9 p.m.
19. What about the Lifetime Achievement
Award?
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an indi-
vidual who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to
business and to the community. The award was presented
to Robert Midkiff, former president of American Financial
Services of Hawaii, in 2002; to Bill Aull, former president
of Hawaiian Trust Co. Ltd., in 2003; to Henry Clark, for-
mer chairman of Castle & Cooke, in 2004; Walter Dods,
Chairman of First Hawaiian Bank in 2005; David Heenan,
author and trustee for The Estate of James Campbell, in
2006; Stuart Ho, former president and CEO, Rehabilita-
tion Hospital of the Pacific in 2007 and Bill Paty, former
CEO of Waialua Sugar Co. The person honored is selected
by the sponsor committee.
