Delivery Methods - Media Selection Matrix

This matrix has been created as a tool for Performance Consultants and Course Managers to help select the best delivery method, based on understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each. These methods can be combined for a blended learning approach.

Instructor-Led: Face to face classroom training with one or more instructors.

One time Expenses $10,000/course-day Delivery expenses $325/day/student travel and living $1500/day for instructor delivery. Notes Additional costs may be incurred for facilities, materials and administration. Does not include time away from job or missed opportunities.

Benefits
Face to face interaction: provides access to expert(s) Networking: Employees are able to exchange information and network with colleagues. Non-verbal communication: ability to interact non-verbally (body language, spatial relationships). Modeling Behavior: Instructor and students can practice with modeling desired and undesired behaviors. Multiple correct paths/results: Instructor can assess and critique learner progress. Students are able to learn more than one correct outcome. Variable audience: Instructor can tailor material to varying audience levels in real time. Students receive individual attention.

Drawbacks
Instructor controlled sequencing: Limited learner control over topics, content, sequence and pace. Instructor consistency: Variability in instructor delivery style and expertise. Timing: Wait time for a class to be offered, delaying skill development, scheduling conflicts may prevent employee from taking training. Time away from the job: some people may delay or indefinitely put off needed training. Costs: Training and travel costs may be prohibitive..

Use When . . .
Students need to practice interpersonal skills: students need to practice skills that are difficult or cannot be realistically simulated through use of technology (i.e. wiring circuit breakers, configuring machines). Consistency and timeliness: you want everyone to hear the same thing at the same time (i.e. a given organization needs a one day deployment). Students centrally located: students are geographically concentrated and are readily available. Student population is low: Optimal class size for one session is 15-20. Lead time: at least 4 6 weeks

Virtual Instructor: Live online instruction using tool such as Centra or NetMeeting to bring students together in a virtual online classroom. Students must register and participate in sessions at scheduled time.
One time Expenses $3,500/2 hour course Delivery expenses $800/2 hours for instructor delivery. Notes Additional costs may be incurred for licensing fees, materials and administration. Does not include time away from job or missed opportunities.

Drawbacks
Extended content limitation: Not recommended for more than one to two hours of content Inconsistent Quality: Quality is limited by the expertise and presentation skills of SME Limited interactivity: This media is usually used with a short turnaround when a presentation already exists. Minimal instructional design input and variable presenter skills can impact the quality of the presentation.

Use When
Lead time: between one and four weeks Two hours or less: topic can be presented in less than two hours Existing presentation: There is an existing presentation or SME is developing presentation Geographically dispersed audience Cost: Funding is limited Audio: having the student listen and/or interact is valuable.

Webcourse: Web-based training course incorporating complex interactions e.g. multiple choice, drag/drop, matching, differentiating and applying concepts, detailed animation, and audio (optional). Designed to engage students and stimulate higher order thinking.
One time Expenses $40,000+/hour course Delivery expenses Notes Additional costs may be incurred for licensing fees, materials and administration. Does not include time away from job or missed opportunities.

Benefits
Anytime/Anywhere: students can access content anytime, anywhere Emulates real-life: Interactive design provides for real-life application of educational principles Engaging: Level of interactivity requires that the student be fully engaged in the training process

Drawbacks
Extended content limitation: Not recommended for more than three to four hours of training Limited opportunity for real time, live feedback: Student questions must be directed via email with a

Use When
Lead time: greater than six weeks Topic can be presented in less than four hours (can be modularized if necessary) Audience is geographically dispersed Behavioral Objective: A change i b h i i d l Page 2 of 5

Evaluation: Testing and tracking of student achievement is provided Content-specific feedback: Test provides feedback to student regarding the material which should be reviewed Student controlled sequencing: Student determines where to focus time and attention Design based on behavioral, work-related objectives Easy updates: Relatively easy to make content updates

wait time for response. No observation to detect issues:: Navigation or usability issues are not immediately evident Connectivity: Requires network connectivity or access to computer for downloaded course materials Bandwidth limitations: Somewhat limited use of audio and video due to bandwidth issues

in behavior is expected as a result of the training.

Web-based Tool Training: Tool simulation allows students to work with the actual interface in a nonthreatening environment. Screen captures are taken of the tool and functionality is simulated through a series of identified tasks. Simulation-based assessments may be included to help the student gauge their progress. Audio is optional.

*TREATMENT AND CONTENT STATUS are two major factors that effect delivery time. The higher the complexity of the treatment, the more development time required. The more research, organization, and design required to organize the content, the more development time required. Treatment Levels Level 1: Information Based Media (i.e. virtual instructor, webcast) Level 2: Moderately complex courseware that includes some original graphics, audio, no animation, and no video. (i.e. webcourse) Level 3: Interactive educational media, refers to higher-end training that includes audio, video, graphics, and animation or some combination (i.e. web-based tools training) Level 4: Specialized interactive courseware, simulations, highly interactive (i.e. sales scenarios) Content Levels A= Production: course manager provides all content, instructional design & storyboards B= Redesign and Production: classroom content already exists, content needs instructional design, development and production C= Design and Production: raw content exists, we need to do instructional design, development and production D= Research, Design and Production: content for training does not exist, we must engage SMEs, do research, design and production.
