WEVE MOVED! Weve been here since April, but we have just recently finished emptying all of our boxes and would love to have you come up and visit us in our new place. Good News
Into Your Neighborhood
REACH NOTE: Paul and Joanne Mittmann are longtime Calvary members and recently found a simple yet effective way to get to know their neighbors and begin the process of sharing Christ with them. They hosted a neighborhood summer BBQ and invited all 13 houses on their cul-de-sac to the event. Here is what Joanne had to say about the event, her and Pauls prayer and hope for their neighborhood. We joined Calvary in 1988. Paul has been a 3rd grade Sunday School teacher and been involved in the High School River Romps as a boat driver. I have been involved in a Womens Bible study and Moms and More. Together, we have been involved in a home LifeGroup and on the VBS prayer salvation team. Currently we are part of the Celebration service Prayer Point team and attend the Encouragers Sunday morning LifeGroup. This idea has been simmering for a long time on the

back burner of our minds. We have lived in our house for over 34 years and seen neighbors come and go. With many we have developed friendships that have lasted over the years. But there are others we dont know at all. We have a mission field right on our own cul-desac of 13 homes. While going through the Contagious Christianity book in our LifeGroup and Encouragers class, the idea of a Jade Way BBQ jumped to the front burner. We were further prompted by the upcoming Billy Graham My Hope for America nationwide crusade that will be held this fall. The premise for My Hope for America is that instead of holding a crusade in a large stadium, we are to invite folks into our homes to watch the crusade on TV. These can be relatives, neighbors and friends with whom you have a burden to share the gospel. These home crusades have been very effective in other countries. As we learned in Contagious Christianity, we need to pray for our neighbors and develop a relationship with them. The BBQ seemed like a quick way to get acquainted with the neighbors we didnt really know. One of our goals with the BBQ is to get them from our front yard gathering, to our back yard with smaller groups and then into our house to watch My Hope for America in November. To get the neighborhood BBQ off the ground, we first enlisted the help of two

other neighbors we know well and are very friendly and outgoing. They agreed to be co-hosts with us and help talk it up as they bumped into people on the street. We printed simple fliers inviting them to the event and hand delivered them to each house. If they were home, we had a chance to visit. Otherwise we left it in their mailbox. We had an RSVP sheet that they could return to our mailbox with their address, names and who would be attending as we didnt even know the full names of some of these people! We had decided to not advertise it as a potluck but if they asked to bring something, then that was great. It does take some work and expense. We had to borrow tables, chairs, tablecloths and umbrellas from our family. I made lots of salads and desserts and barbecued the meat a little ahead of time. We had made up name tags for everyone and had a clipboard for them to write their phone, email, etc., for a neighborhood address sheet. We held it on our front lawn so everyone could see what was happening and not feel shy about attending. The event went better than expected. Many neighbors brought food that we didnt plan on, so there was an abundance of goodies. We had representation from every house except one because they were out of town. We asked each person to share a minute or two about themselves. Many were happy to share much longer! We found Recent research indicates 84% of Orange County residents have lived at the same address for over a year plus (US Census, 2010). This means we have plenty of opportunities here in Orange County to meet our neighbors and be an example of Jesus Christ to them. In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus encourages us as followers of Him in this way when He says, You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

out some really interesting things - one neighbor who we thought was in her 80s is 96 and still drives! Another is a national ping pong champion for his age group. Unfortunately we also learned some couples were living together without marriage and others were practicing Buddhism. We have already seen that many neighbors are much friendlier now hanging out their car windows to yell a greeting instead of looking the other way as they go by. Concerns are being shared with us more frequently. We can build upon the relationships with the information we have learned. We are so glad we did this and all the neighbors were very appreciative and want to do it again! Lastly, the most important thing is to pray by name for each neighbor long before the event and after it is over. For more information, visit hopewithbillygra Another Simple and Quick Outreach Idea: Carry a $5 Subway gift card attached to a small Gospel Booklet in the glove compartment of your car. When you come across someone holding a sign at an intersection or in a store parking lot, give out the gift cards and Gospel Booklets as a quick way to encourage someone and share Christ.

Reach Sunday 2013

Come see how God is using stories to bring people to Jesus around the world and discover how you can be a part of it. Join us on Sunday, October 13 as we hear from special guest speaker, Dr. Grant Lovejoy.

Dr. Grant Lovejoy

Its time to reclaim the story quality of the Bible. ~ Grant Lovejoy

Sunday, October 13 // 8:45 am + 10:45 am in the Worship Center

The Bible is a story, why is a sermon a list? Lets reclaim the story quality of the Bible.
Roughly 5.7 billion people-over 80 percent of the world's population-live primarily by orality because they are non-readers, estimates Grant Lovejoy, Director of Oral Strategies for IMB. Jesus used parables to explain truth, and in the same way modern-day Christians should "speak the word to them as they [are] able to hear it" (Mark 4:33), says Lovejoy. "Let's reclaim the story quality of the Bible. Stories have an appeal to people who would never listen to a sermon. People across the world speak nearly 7,000 languages, but only 450 have a complete Bible. The only way the others are going to hear the Gospel is through spoken communication within the context of their oral cultures notes Lovejoy. He warned against an insistence on sermonizing, saying, "We're like King Saul, who said, 'Wear my armor' to David. David used what God gave him, and that was more than enough in the hand of God." In Bible storying, care is taken "to build an ethos to protect God's Word," using principles and techniques "that help a storying group preserve biblical accuracy as they retell the story, with the Bible serving as the final authority." Join us on Sunday morning for the unique opportunity to hear from Dr. Grant Lovejoy, as we continue to ask, Can YOU Tell the Story?

Grant Lovejoy serves as the Director of Orality Strategies for the International Mission Board of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He taught at Southwestern as Associate Professor of Preaching for a number of years and continues to teach adjunctly on the topic of Chronological Bible Storying at numerous Baptist seminaries around the world. Since 1988, Dr. Lovejoy has served a dozen congregations as their interim pastor. He is also co-editor and contributing author of Biblical Hermeneutics: A Comprehensive Guide to Interpreting Scripture.

NEXT STEPS :
Is God Calling Me into Full Time Global Missions?
Have you ever considered serving overseas for a lifetime? People can be emotionally moved by a dynamic speaker. But an emotional feeling will only sustain someone on the field for a short time. A true calling by God on their life is what is necessary to keep a missionary on the field. Following Gods call to become a missionary is a great way to serve the Lord. However, there is more involved than just declaring that the person wants to be a missionary. Each mission field, mission agency and mission work will have its own special requirements. A person interested in mission work needs to take time to prepare properly for serving the Lord long-term. Calvary Church wants to help lead and direct your focus and has prepared a special program designed to make that happen. Future Missionary Focus is for our people who are interested in pursuing global missionary service in their future. With goals and guidelines designed to help you find Gods plan for your life, a self-paced program has been written allowing you to complete the course over a period of time from as little as six months to three years. Working with a mentor on a monthly basis, you will design your program to work with your schedule and set up individual time frames as you seek Gods calling. Future Missionary Focus is a required candidate program for those considering serving as Calvary Church missionaries. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact the REACH Global Missions Director, Liz Gold at 714.550.2340 for an appointment to begin the process. Once an application and commitment form are completed and returned, then a mentor is assigned who will work with the participant throughout their candidate process. Our goal is to help you become a fully prepared Christian and, if God leads through the process, a future missionary of Calvary Church. We would appreciate your prayers for the following people who are currently involved in the candidate program through the Future Missionary Focus: David and Amy Smith; Marc Munzing; Jon Davidson; Jeremy Hebits; Sabrina Chao; Kari Watrous; Wesley Jackson; Yesenia Valenquez; David Geis; Steve Coombs; Jamilyn Cummings and Moses Zambrano. We covet your prayers for those listed and for those who are participating in the program.

Short Term Team Recap

This summer, Calvary sent a team of 15 college students to Kandern, Germany, led by Michael Welles and John Woods, (both of whom were part of the 2008 Germany team). The team completed a number of construction projects to make the headquarters building for Greater Europe Mission more functional. This both benefited the organization and allowed Calvary missionary, Chris Tweedy, to spend more time using his gifts in finance to lead the organization, instead of spending his summer working on construction projects.

Germany

The Germany team also led a Vacation Bible School for the local German elementary school children as well as some of the missionary kids. They were able to publicize it in the local paper, as well as go to local schools and invite the children in person. It was the first time, since opening up a few years ago, that local children were invited to have activities at the headquarters building. Calvary missionary Susan Tweedy was very encouraged by the program. She said, VBS was great for German kids to hear about Jesus. German parents get a positive impression of missionaries and Christianity, and several missionary kids (including our girls) have the opportunity to attend an American Vacation Bible School

(Germany, cont.) One of the most meaningful aspects of the trip, was the chance to meet many different missionaries from a variety of Kandern based organizations (Greater Europe Mission, Wycliffe, Campus Crusade, Young Life, and others), and understand their heart to reach Europe for Christ. The college students were able to see all of the ways the missionaries they met used their gifts in finance, art, baseball, language translation, technology, media, education, and nursing to further Gods kingdom. This was so encouraging to the students; it was easy to see how any of the gifts our team had could be used in This summer our high school ministry took a group of nineteen people, fifteen high school students and four leaders, to La Montaa Christian Camps in Costa Rica, Central America. The camps vision and goal as a whole is to work with teenagers 12-19 years old and introduce Christ to those who do not know Him yet, to foster the growth of those who already have a relationship with Him, and to send them back home with a faith they can share with others. The camp is similar to the set up at Hume Lake, where it has many recreational activities during the day, accompanied by morning and evening chapels. As our team went to this camp we came with an openness to do whatever was needed by the camp in order to support them. During the week our students would break into work teams that were spread out over the camp to do various projects such as shoveling manure, cleaning out the camp cabins and bathrooms, cleaning the chapel, working in the kitchen, and painting a storage container our church provided for this camp. We would also practice our Spanish skills by engaging in conversations and recreational activities with the campers and staff. missions. A few of the team members are prayerfully considering how the Lord might use them overseas in the future. Thanks for all your support of our team both prayerfully and financially. Keep Calvarys missionaries specifically in your prayers as Germany is spiritually dark and difficult place, but they are trusting the Lord as they shine Christs light into it.

- Michael Welles, Germany team co-leader

My favorite part of this trip was to watch our students humbly submit themselves to hard manual labor and to see them experience camp life behind the scenes, instead of coming as a camper. I think they learned an appreciation for all that is put together to run a camp and now have a different perspective when they attend camp themselves. Some of our students were inspired by this trip and are now contemplating future work in missions and local outreach. Other students really put themselves out of their comfort zones just by coming on this trip where they were challenged to engage with peers of a different language and cultural background. Overall, instead of sending our team over to this camp to teach and be upfront vocally (which is what I am used to doing on mission trips), I feel as though God used us as humble servants to communicate to these campers that as Americans we are not above reproach, but more so we are identified with Christ and follow in His example to humble ourselves and put others before us.

Our jobs in Japan were many. We were there as workers, observers, encouragers, and supporters to the missionaries and believers that are doing Gods work in Japan. We participated in Bible studies, homeless outreach, prayer walks, church services, physical labor, and fellowship. We were able to witness firsthand the work that God is already doing in Japan and see the needs of the people we could pray for, both physically and spiritually. The Japanese Christians are few and definitely need our prayer and encouragement. Please pray for the people of Japan. Pray for continued encouragement and spiritual strength for the believers. Also pray for open hearts and minds for those who have not yet been saved and that they would come to know Jesus. Tim Gold, Japan Team Member

Born out of a Calvary LifeGroup, the Reach team to the Philippines was challenged to serve in a cultural context outside of our own. Four families, including 13 children, made the 36 hour journey to the island of Boracay in order to serve alongside Calvary missionaries Dan and Tori Beaver and Rolando and Theresa Ateinza. Our mission was simple: bring the message and ministry of the Gospel to the poor Filipinos and indigenous tribal people on Boracay and Panay islands. One million tourists visit the small island of Boracy each year, and following them thousands of Filipinos seeking work and a way out of poverty.

shadows, lie the makeshift dwellings typical of Manila and other developing cities.
In the mornings our team went to Boracay Agape Academy to help with a construction project and tutor students in English. Receiving a good education is the second key to breaking the cycle of poverty for each of these children and their families. While they are learning to read and write, they are also learning about and experiencing the first key the transformative power of the Gospel. In the afternoons we ventured out into the poor communities to bring a meal, basic medical attention, and a Bible story and message to kids who need to know about and see the love of Jesus through His people. One of the children on our team led a young Filipino child in prayer to accept Jesus as her Savior. Another of the children on our team professed interest in becoming a missionary because of his experience. All of the adults on our team saw the reality of cross-cultural ministry, returning to Orange County with a vivid understanding of both the challenges and rewards and a desire to pray for and support our missionaries. We saw the impact that the Filipinos and missionaries were having in the community. Every person reached for Christ on the island of Boracay becomes a light to the world, and not just in the Philippines. With over 2 million Filipinos traveling around the world, many of them take that light with them. Pray with us for the Filipino people and the ministry of our missionaries that is ongoing, and most of all, that Gods Name would be proclaimed and glorified!

KidWorks + Kingdom Rock

By Gretel Flores, Calvary Church Member and KidWorks Staffer

The experience that KidWorks has at Calvary Church VBS every year is incredible, but this year was astounding. From the very beginning Matt Doan, who was the contact person from Calvary, was very attentive to Kidworks needs. Emailing back and forth daily and accommodating dates and times was what it took to make the trip a reality. As the summer progressed at Kidworks, the number of students enrolled increased and with that so did the worry that it might be too many kids to transport to Calvary. God was in control. Once notified of this blessing, Calvary was willing to rent an eighty-four passenger school bus so that Kidworks would have the opportunity to attend VBS. The staff was blown away by Calvarys desire to do whatever it took for Kidworks to be a part of VBS. Finally the day that we had been waiting for had come. The kids were extremely excited because this was the highlight of their summer, every summer. For some it was the first time at VBS, and for others it was the excitement of going back to the place where they could discover God in a whole new way. Once we arrived chaos was expected, but we encountered just the opposite. All our kids had been registered, had their name tag, were able to be seated in an easy fashion and were ready to begin their adventure.

At this point the staff wondered how it was going to be possible to manage all the kids as they were spread out all the time. Once again Calvary had it covered; along with our name tags we were given a roster of where our kids would be at what time and with whom. It was truly mind blowing to witness the way that Calvary received us this year. With great joy and love they extended their arms to Kidworks and fulfilled the commandment that Jesus left to us saying, Love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31). Kidworks will forever be grateful to all the Calvary staff that went above and beyond to welcome Kidworks and make it the greatest experience of the summer. God bless you Calvary church! KidWorks is a non-profit partner of Calvary Church, serving elementary, junior high and high school students and their families in the low-income areas of Central Santa Ana. Five Questions
bob browning
CALVARYS REACH: RETIREMENT LEADER

For 2 of our Reach Local Leaders

Our ministry team has had the awareness that we are in some ways serving the Lord Himself as we serve others. That is a joy. Q5: How can people from Calvary get involved with our Reach: Retirement Home Ministry? Anyone can participate. Young families with children are ministering as families. The old folks love the little kids. The Lords commandments are not burdensome, so serve to the extent that you feel called to. I am also willing to train those who would like to prepare a short message and serve in a teaching capacity. The more servants we have, the more effective we will be at reaching more people. Please call me at 714.345.7435 or email at rdbrowning@ msn.com for more information.

Q1: How did you find Calvary and how long have you been attending? I first visited Calvary approximately 30 years ago to visit with some friends who were members. The church made an impression on me as a solid place of teaching, fellowship, and worship. When I was looking for a new church home five years ago, I thought I would attend Calvary and give it a try. I have been committed to Calvary on a weekly basis since then. Q2: What areas of ministry have you served in here at Calvary and what sparked your interest in serving the elderly? As far as service at Calvary, I have made myself available during several of the Alpha Courses as a small group discussion facilitator. Last Christmas I had the pleasure of speaking at one of the churchs LifeGroup banquets. As a young Christian, some 35 years ago, I was discipled by a dear friend who was a hospital chaplain in Long Beach. I would attend several hospitals on a weekly basis with him, putting on church services for the elderly, sick, or rehab homes for people hung-up by various addictions. I saw the value of such ministry and formed an outreach team that served every Sunday in the Long Beach and Seal Beach areas. I am now in my second year serving through Calvary Church in the Reach: Retirement Home Ministry. Q3: What does a typical morning of serving at Cranbrook Senior Living Home look like for you and the volunteer team? The Lord has brought together a core group of faithful volunteers. We are at present serving the 2nd Saturday of each month at Cranbrook Senior Living Home in Tustin (10 - 11 am at 1262 Bryan Ave., Tustin.). I have a vision of several teams being formed so we could increase our outreach to other retirement homes in Orange

County. I lead worship on my guitar and on occasion play my saw with a violin bow for the residents. Through a short devotional and prayer and then quality one on one visitation, our group has encouraged the residents and staff of the home. Q4: What have been some of the joys of serving in the Reach: Retirement Home Ministry? This is not the most attractive of ministries. There are areas of sadness that we witness. The residents are for the most part going to be confined to a hospital setting for the rest of their lives. I suppose that a highlight is knowing we are fulfilling a commandment of the Bible from James 1:27. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. We have brought those we serve to be able to experience the joys of Gods word and fellowship and worship, that many of us take for granted.

REACH LOCAL PARTNERSHIP

the SHEEPFOLD
Marlene Eckert
CALVARY CHURCH MEMBER & ANGEL TREE COORDINATOR

Sheepfold is a Christ centered shelter, providing refuge and a new beginning for homeless abused women and their children.
Sheepfold Article From August 2013 Newsletter: Two years ago to the date, I moved into The Sheepfold. Tonight I signed paperwork for my very first and very own apartment, after recently "graduating" from Second Step. It's amazing to see how far I have come from when I first moved into the Sheepfold-depressed and lost. How was Sheepfold going to help me find my way? Since then I have accomplished more in these two years than I did in all the previous years since I had my son Preston.

Q1:How did you arrive at Calvary (How did you hear about the Church, who invited you etc.) and how long have you been attending Calvary? My daughter was going into her senior year of high school, and her best friend was attending Calvary at the time and suggested we try it. That was August 1995. I've been at Calvary ever since! Q2: Youve been involved in a lot of ministries here at Calvary over the years. Can you tell us about them, and what your motivation for being involved in them is? Besides being the Angel Tree coordinator, I also serve as one of the 1st grade leaders for VBS and serve on the Nursery with 12-18 month toddlers. In the past I have been a wedding ceremony coordinator, VBS photographer, preschool/K Sunday School sub, KidWorks after-school tutor and served in Care ministries. I occasionally help with other Reach activities such as the Easter Egg hunt. I want to love others the way Jesus asks us, and focus on others rather than my own selfish desires. Q3: How did you get involved with Angel Tree? Matt Doan asked me to be a part of it. In September 2008, about half dozen of us attended a regional meeting and Karin Arango, an Angel Tree director from Prison Fellowship, lit a fire under us! Q4: For those who dont know, what is Angel Tree all about? The mission of Angel Tree is to reconcile inmates with their children. Inmates apply to have Christmas gifts given to their kids, and God uses people like you and I to be His hands and feet to give gifts on behalf of the inmate parents to the children, as a reminder of their parents love for them. What I enjoy most about Angel Tree is seeing it all come together and the smiles on the childrens faces! Q5: How can others get involved in Ange Tree this Christmas season? We have opportunities for people to make phone calls to reach out to the families, plan and run the Christmas party, wrap and deliver gifts, as well as man the lobby tables and assist administratively. And of course, whether you volunteer or not, you can pick up an Angel tag and purchase one or more gifts. Please contact Marlene Eckert at meckert1@socal.rr.com for more information.

got my driver's license back, a job, a car and most of all the "peace in my heart" I had been look ing for my entire life.

I am growing in knowledge of the Bible, Jesus, and the grace and love of God. In 2012, I was baptized. My son watched and yelled to make sure I held my nose. Because of the House Managers, volunteers and all those people who donate to this ministry, I was able to get a new start. I came from wanting to leave Sheepfold in the beginning to not wanting to leave now that it is time. I give thanks, first of all, to the Lord my mighty God for never leaving my side, for the House Managers for loving me and going above and beyond in reaching out to me so I can be where I am, and for the family who donated the car I received. I love my car and think of you as I take Preston to daycare, go to the grocery store or drive to work. Thanks to all the volunteers and supporters who take time out of their schedules to be with us and our kids, and who provide wonderful holidays in the shelter. (Christmas is amazing!) To those people I want to say that without all of you, my life would have remained in a dark world and my son would be in foster care. Through the love of God you made my future possible.

2013 has been a special year at Calvary for our Worship/ Creative Arts Ministry. During Calvarys Art Weekend in April, we commemorated the 30th anniversary of the passing of Corrie ten Boom (author of The Hiding Place) with a fully staged production, TEN BOOM - The Musical. The response to this original musical, written by Calvarys own Ron Rogalski and Kris Bromberger, was overwhelming, as over 2,000 people experienced the dramatic true story of courage and faith in the middle of WWII Nazi oppression. Due to both this positive response, and a passionate cast/crew, Calvary Church is proud to bring the musical back this November. This encore presentation of TEN BOOM is edited and revised to be shorter, while keeping all of the impact of the original production. Our desire is that those who loved the musical when they first viewed it in April would use this opportunity to reach out locally and invite friends and neighbors to view it the second time around. A musical theater production like this has something that almost everyone can enjoy: dramatic acting, costumes, live music, dance, visuals, sets, and more. People who might never come to a Sunday church service are open to visit for a theatrical production. God can use this musical, based on the story, The Hiding Place, to touch a persons heart with the Gospel. Invite your friends and help reach our community for Christ.

Dr. Vic & Joan Olsen

FAITHFULLY SERVING THE LORD
IN GLOBAL MISSIONS

50 YEARS

Dr. Viggo (Vic) Olsen and his wife, Joan were surgeons serving in the USA, when God invaded their lives and wouldnt let go. Once they had found the Savior they had no choice but to follow where He led them to East Pakistan where the people there without the Gospel and without a hospital. They arrived in 1962 after several months of studies of tropical medicines in England. By the time they left the country would have a new name Bangladesh and a new hospital, The Memorial Christian Hospital in Malumghat. At 85 years old, the now legendary Daktar (as the Bangladeshi people called him), continues to serve the people of Bangladesh, as they work on a translation of the New Testament.

that the translation should have turned out so well ... it was God who knew the principle was right and gave us the help we needed.

Theres no reason

After serving 33 years overseas as a medical missionary for the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE), Dr. Olsen is a legend in Bangladesh and in missionary circles around the world. The New York Times even compared him to Dr. David Livingstone, the great 19th century medical missionary and African explorer. But all of Dr. Olsens accomplishments may fade in comparison to the work he is doing now. He and his wife, Joan, a distinguished missionary in her own right, are translating the New Testament into Muslim-friendly English. According to a news release from Steve Yount at A. Larry Ross Communications, at 85, their health doesnt always permit them to work the long hours that they once did. But, after several stops and starts, they have finished the first draft of the translation, are working on the second draft and plan to finish the project this year.

The need for special translations for Muslims became apparent after the Olsens began serving in Bangladesh, then known as East Pakistan, in 1962, said the release. When they arrived, they found that the only Bible in the Bengali language available to Muslims dated to missionary William Careys time in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Culturally, that Bible was better suited for Buddhists and Hindus. For example, the Bible used a Hindu word, Ishwar, for God; Ishwar is one of thousands of Hindu gods. To many Muslims, that is blasphemy and shocking, said Vic Olsen. The Olsens created a pocket dictionary of 4,600 Bengali Muslim words, and then spent 10 years leading a team that created a New Testament for Bengali Muslims. Published in 1980, it became the No. 1 bestselling book in Bangladesh. We tried to get others to do it, but they had their own projects, Dr. Olsen said. It seemed to us that this was the key to our work, so somehow it had to be done. While serving as a surgeon at Memorial Christian Hospital in Malumghat, Bangladesh, which he and his medical team founded in 1966, Dr. Olsen took time to work on the translation. Sometimes we would work until 2 or 3 am, Dr. Olsen said. Theres no reason that the translation should have turned out so well on the basis of our background, yet somehow it was God who knew the principle was right and gave us the help we needed. Currently their MC Hospital is being rebuilt to accommodate 100 hospital beds for impoverished Bengalis seeking medical help, and receiving Gods message as well.

An early photo of Dr. Vic & Joan Olsen The translation team eventually produced a complete Muslim Bengali Bible, with the help of colleagues such as Dr. Lynn Silvernale, Dr. William Barrick and Rev. George King. Since then, the Olsens have become renowned for their translations for Muslims, and Dr. Olsen has trained other translators to lead similar projects with the concept of culturally sensitive translations becoming increasingly popular. Biblica, formerly called International Bible Society, already has released the Olsens Muslimfriendly English translation of the Book of Matthew. The cover is green with gold lettering. Green has been associated with Islam since the days of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. The title is The Holy Injil using the Arabic word for good news with the subtitle First Book: Matthew. The book uses certain Arabic words, such as Isa for Jesus and Ibrahim for Abraham, that have special significance for Muslims, no matter what their native tongue is. Small adjustments like that change the tone completely, Dr. Olsen said.

That may sound like an impossible dream, but God makes the impossible possible.

Dr. Vic Olsen has written three inspirational books, most notably Daktar: Diplomat in Bangladesh. Published in 1973, two years after Bangladeshs war of independence, this No. 1 best-selling book concludes with the new governments decision to grant him Visa No. 001 in honor of his service. Today, the Olsens live in Southern California. Despite being slowed by recent surgeries, their enthusiasm for their work has not diminished with age. They continue the production of the Muslim English New Testament, the Holy Injil. Millions of people all over the world speak and read English, Dr. Olsen said. There are more than 3,000 Muslim people groups, with many English speakers in them, so this Muslim-friendly New Testament were working on has the possibility of blessing every Muslim group in the world. That may sound like an impossible dream, but God makes the impossible possible. Dr. Vic and Joan Olsen have served with ABWE, a Christian organization that works in more than 70 countries, for more than 50 years. They are retired missionaries with Calvary Church and available to speak in LifeGroups. Contact the REACH Global Missions office for more information.
