Scotiabank EcoLiving Awards 2013

Eligibility and criteria

$50,000
Business Leadership Award
Established product or service Who is eligible? Any established corporation, sole proprietorship or partnership providing eco-friendly products or services to the residential sector. Submission guidelines Submissions should focus primarily on the execution of a proven idea or program, using client testimonials, case studies, letters of reference, sales reports, media clippings, photos, video clips or other supporting data. Judging criteria The Business Leadership Award rewards the successful implementation of innovative, costeffective and transferable energy-efficiency measures (see below for definitions). Successful: Success is determined by the reach of the program (i.e., it reaches a significant number of clients, demonstrating that the initiative has gone beyond the pilot stage) and the overall reductions in energy consumption achieved by the initiative. Innovative: The program may build on past successes, but should demonstrated a novel approach or element. Judging will consider the degree of innovation. Deep reductions: The program achieves reductions at a reasonable price, with the recognition that deeper reductions in energy consumption may cost more per unit of energy saved (compared to cream-skimming measures that have a very fast payback time but dont necessarily achieve large reductions in overall energy use, such as changes to lighting systems).

$15,000

for a business providing eco-friendly products or services to the residential sector

Innovation Award

$10,000

for a prototype or recently launched eco-friendly product or service for the residential sector Prototype or recently launched product or service (within six months of submission) Who is eligible? Any corporation, sole proprietorship, partnership or individual providing eco-friendly products or services to the residential sector or interested in that market. Submission guidelines Submissions should focus on the introduction of exciting new ideas for products, programs or approaches. Applicants may submit written documents, drawings or blueprints, a prototype, an online/social media campaign and, for newly launched products/services, client testimonials, case studies and/or supporting data. Judging criteria The Innovation Award will reward the introduction of a new product, program or idea based on its capacity to generate public interest in and excitement for saving energy, its capacity to facilitate deep reductions in energy consumption, and its potential for deployment on a large scale (see below for definitions). New and exciting: Projects should make use of design, materials, methods, technologies, approaches or intervention packages that are in some way novel. In spite of a strong business case, energy efficiency has long suffered from a perception of being boring and unsexy, resulting in relatively low levels of activity; hence, the Innovation Award will recognize the contribution of new ways of promoting energy efficiency (e.g., through social media) to the general public that increase public awareness and interest. Deep reductions: Given the urgency of achieving major reductions in energy use, and thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to avoid dangerous levels of global warming, the Innovation Award will be awarded for the project that demonstrates the greatest capacity for significant reductions in energy consumption (e.g., greater than 40 per cent). Potential for deployment: The core element of the product, program or idea should have the potential to be replicated so as to reach a significant share of the market, campaign or other supporting data.

Student Leadership Award

for Canadian post-secondary students with an innovative concept or prototype for energy conservation Concept or prototype Who is eligible? A Canadian citizen, enrolled full-time at a Canadian college or university, or with a strong personal interest, in environmental studies. Submission guidelines Applicants are to submit a written essay of up to 4,000 words maximum, and are encouraged to provide drawings, blueprints, prototype designs, online social media campaigns or other supporting materials. Judging criteria The winning candidate demonstrates promise for the future of home energy conservation, with a demonstrated interest in and capacity for innovation in energy conservation-related matters. Deep reductions: The project demonstrates the potential for significant reductions in energy consumption. Capacity for innovation: Degree to which the project makes use of design, materials, methods, technologies, approaches or intervention packages that are in some way novel. Potential for deployment: The project should allude to the plausibility of deployment.
