4th Year Projects (academic year 2013-2014) PHASM101: 4th Year Astrophysics Projects Course coordinator Dr Anasuya Aruliah

(PHASM101): a.aruliah@ucl.ac.uk PHASM201: 4th Year Physics Projects Course coordinator Dr Mark Ellerby (PHASM201): mark.ellerby@ucl.ac.uk) PHASM000: 4th Year Medical Physics Projects The 4th Year research projects are carried out during the first two terms in Year 4. There are three parallel streams from which to choose a project: PHASM101: Astrophysics, PHASM201: Physics and PHASM000: Medical Physics. You will be called upon to execute and present a complex and openended scientific investigation. This is a challenging and rewarding course providing a genuine experience of research, and you will be contributing to the departments research activity whilst working within a particular research groups team. Post-examination period - a list of projects is made available via the Moodle page (http://moodle.ucl.ac.uk/). On each of the web pages there are links to the other fourth year projects available. The projects currently up on Moodle represent last years projects and will provide an idea of the kind of projects available. Students should contact potential supervisors by email. Please do not chase after more than 3 projects and make a decision quickly so as to allow other students a chance. You should agree a project with your supervisor by the last day of the summer term (Friday 7th June). You may work with a project partner if the supervisor considers this feasible and useful. Students choose partners and projects (by consulting with relevant supervisors). Having chosen your project, and obtained the supervisor's agreement, you must then inform the appropriate course coordinator who will then flag your choice on the course Moodle page. It is possible to do a project with a supervisor in one of the other departments in the MAPS Faculty (Mathematics, Chemistry or Earth Sciences). However, if you want to keep it as a course within the Physics or Astrophysics stream, please discuss this with the course coordinator, since you will need a second supervisor who is in the Dept of Physics & Astronomy. Students who have not managed to settle on a project during the first teaching week of the first term will be allocated one by the Course Coordinators. Basic information: The projects represent 3/8 of the 4th year course and consequently you need to pass this course to graduate on the MSci. The Moodle web pages will be opened after the exams, and the passwords will be: 13PM101 for PHASM101 13PM201 for PHASM201 The overall course is assessed on the project talk (15%) and the project report (85%). Summary of important dates: Post-exams contact potential supervisors by e-mail. Aim to have project identified by mid June. Contact the course coordinator if there are any concerns/issues to be discussed. Student and supervisor must contact course coordinator to confirm project. 4th week of the first term - submission of project outline (Monday 14th October 2013). Second week of Second Term - submission of progress report (Monday 13th January 2014). Includes an inspection by the first supervisor of laboratory notebook/logbook, mainly to provide feedback for students. In the 2nd week of January there will be a short progress interview with the course coordinator or a member of academic staff to see how the project is progressing. Meeting with the supervisor mid to late Feb to discuss outline of contents/structure of project report and get feedback. 2nd term - Project Talks (held over several days in the first half of March). End of 2nd Term Submission of Project Report (Deadline is 12:00 pm Wednesday after end of term).
