What is the difference
between CNG and LNG?
Both are natural gas in two physical forms:
liquefed and compressed.
LNG is liquid natural gas which has been super-cooled
to -260F and changed from gas to liquid. Liquefaction
reduces the volume by 600-to-1. The volume reduction
allows you to haul more fuel so you can travel longer
distances than a CNG fueled vehicle.
Since LNG is cryogenically cooled and stored at low
pressure, lighter-weight containers that dont require
special protection from sunlight, road debris, and
collision are available. Since pressure doesnt cycle
between flls, there is no mandatory lifetime limitation
or periodic inspection requirement for LNG containers.
How safe is LNG?
What happens if a vehicle is involved
in an accident?
LNG is colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, and
non-toxic. LNG containers are double walled
and made of ductile austenitic stainless that bends
rather than breaking. Like other liquid-fuel tanks,
LNG containers are subjected to drop tests that
ensure loss of contents will not occur in the
event of an accident.
Where can I fll it?
You can fll at any public LNG fueling station. The
plans for Americas Natural Gas Highway to place
NGV fueling stations along major trucking corridors
will enhance your LNG accessibility.
How long does
it take to fll a tank?
It takes less than fve minutes... just like fueling a
diesel engine. Typical fll rates are between 25
and 50 gallons per minute.
Where can I buy an
LNG vehicle, engine,
or conversion kit?
Most major OEMs offer LNG fuel systems as factory
or upft options. Also, a wide variety of re-power and
conversion options for LNG fuel systems (dedicated,
dual-fuel and bi-fuel) exist for many vehicle types
and platforms. Typical ROI for the incremental cost
of a new vehicle, re-power or conversion is realized
within 18-24 months.
How economical is LNG?
How does it compare to diesel?
Although LNG is less energy dense than diesel, it is
commonly priced in diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) to
avoid user confusion. The DGE for LNG is up to 40%
less than diesel.
