our heritage
We are proud of over 180 years of British manufacturing in Cumbria. Our pencil museum stands on the site of our original factory in Keswick and attracts visitors from all over the world

our environment
Our factory is located in one of the most beautiful parts of England and using pencils is a very natural art-form, so we are doing all we can to minimise our impact on the environment. We have reduced our energy consumption, we recycle our sawdust and we are using sustainable resources wherever possible. Also, we have been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise for our unique solvent-free paint application system which has greatly improved the air quality.

Vibrant strokes of ink-like colour
This year sees the Inktense Blocks range extended to 72 colours widening your painting possibilities. These chunky water-soluble ink blocks will bring a new sense of freedom and colour to your drawing and painting. Dry Derwent Inktense delivers pure vibrant colour but when completely washed out it is transformed into a translucent ink-like paint which, when dry, can be worked over. The blocks are extremely versatile and can be used for a wide range of creative effects. You can use them like pans of paint, dip them in water and apply colour directly to the paper, use dry on their side or apply directly to wet paper for instant intense colour.
They can also be used on fabric to create stunning silk paintings and quilts.

Pencil to ink in just one wash

Pen and ink offers strong, intense colour combined with a translucent effect. Now you can enjoy these distinctive qualities in an easy to use pencil. Inktense has a highly blendable texture and comes in a range of jewel-like colours, plus a non-soluble outliner which allows you to draw outlines that are permanent, even when water is applied. Apply pure, vibrant dry colour then wash the pigment out completely to leave an ink-like effect. Once dry, the colour is permanent and can be worked over with other media. The possibilities are endless, the results stunning. Inktense pencils can be used on fabric to create interesting silk paintings and unique quilting projects.
Working with Inktense Pencils is pure joy. When painting the peacock, I found the luminescence of the colours allowed me to build many glazes of different colours to suggest the luminosity of the peacock
feathers without the fear of any colours lifting.

Paint in a stick
Watercolour pencils are amazingly versatile and Aquatone offers four times more useable material than a wood cased pencil. This solid stick of pure, water-soluble colour can be used wet or dry, and you can apply broad sweeps of colour in seconds. For even faster colour lay down, simply peel off the protective wrapper and apply Aquatone on its side. Aquatone will give you many hours of creative pleasure. Freedom of expression with the ultimate colour range
This is the first colour pencil Derwent ever developed in the 1930s. Its traditional round barrel and wide core makes it perfect for broad strokes and free, expressive drawing. Artists slightly waxy texture is ideal for multiple layering and blending to produce an infinite spectrum of subtly different hues and tints. If you prefer a crisper, more precise drawing style try our Studio pencil range which has a slim hexagonal barrel making it easy to grip. The Studio core is identical to Artists so they complement each other perfectly.

I build up tone and colour with a lot of cross-hatching and like to work on fairly smooth surfaces. I like the individual colours and marks that I use to be evident in the finished work and, with these pencils, I feel I have a great deal of control over how much colour is put down at any
time. Derwent Artists pencils are perfect for me - the range of colours is superb, the barrels are a good size and very comfortable for sustained use - especially as my work can take some time to complete!

Precise, perfect colour
If you like the texture and blendability of
Artists colour pencils, but prefer a crisper, more precise drawing style, this pencil is for you. Studio shares the same colour core as Artists, but is slimmer and the wood barrel is hexagonal rather than round. The result? A colour pencil that is easy to grip and particularly suited to detailed illustration work, such as botanical studies, architectural drawing and graphic design. All these disciplines tend to be studio-based hence the name.

The hexagonal shape of Studio pencils make them easy to hold for complete control. I was able to produce thinner lines than with other Derwent pencils, and even with a thinner line, Derwent Studio maintains the same intensity of
colour. The colours in the range blend together easily and help you reach any result you can imagine.

Our pencil sharpeners are the easy way to achieve the perfect point. The metal sharpener is designed to fit all our ranges while the pastel sharpener is specifically designed for use with this more fragile media. It is also suitable for sharpening charcoal pencils and our other large diameter pencils, including Drawing and Artists. Derwent has two battery operated sharpeners. The five hole sharpener sharpens up to four different pencil diameters, has a rotating base and the ability to alter the sharpness of the pencil points. Our Superpoint helical sharpener with its long lasting steel rotary cutter ensures that an extra long point is delivered in seconds every time.
The twin sharpener with reservoir is ideal for sharpening both large and small diameter pencils and the shavings are neatly caught in the see through container. Perfect for when you are out and about. All items available individually unless otherwise stated.

Erasers
An eraser for every artist. A range of highly effective erasers developed specifically for artists. Each eraser will suit a different way of working, yet all offer impressive smudge free erasing. The Art Eraser is an all round general use eraser that works well with all kinds of pencils; the Soft Art Eraser is as the name suggests, softer than its sibling. It contains charcoal for gentle and effective erasing, causing less damage to the paper. These erasers come in a pack of two or as a mixed pack containing one of each type.
For those that prefer a different grip, the Shaped Erasers are easy to hold and control, and when you want to get really precise and accurate try the Eraser-pen which comes in a convenient pen shape with a comfort grip. (Replacements are available separately) The Kneadable Eraser is perfect for lifting out tone and colour, it is soft and pliable and comes in wax paper to help keep it fresher for longer.
For everyday use the Plastic eraser can remove graphite and unwanted marls, the Pencil eraser is perfect for fine detail, while the Battery operated eraser offers precision and speed in correcting small areas of work.

Burnisher
The Derwent Burnisher is a hard colourless pencil which when used over layers of pigment provides a rich polished finish. Burnishing pushes the pigment into the paper and leaves a well blended, photo like finish. Derwent Inktense Blocks and the new XL Blocks can be messy to use but Derwent Grippers offer the perfect solution. Made from rubber they slide onto the block, holding it securely, making it comfortable to use while you are working and keep your hands clean! Grate n Shake
Have fun with the Derwent Grate n Shake. Designed for use with Inktense Blocks the Grate n Shake allows you to mix paint and create your own colours. Grate the Inktense Blocks into water and then shake the container to mix the pigment. The Grate n Shake is ideal for creating translucent colour washes or painting ink to cover large areas. Shave n Save
This ingenious little tool is designed for use with the Artbar range. It is designed to sharpen and shape your Artbar to suit your requirements. The container collects all the shavings and you can save them for later use; sprinkling them over a wet or damp painting and pushing them into the surface to create interesting effects and texture.
Spritzer
The Spritzer adds a new creative dimension to your water based work. Spray water directly over water-soluble drawings to create interesting textures, colour runs and dribble effects. You can also dissolve colour pigment in the Grate n Shake (Inktense or Watercolour for example) fill the spritzer and spray colour straight onto your image. Many artists will also spray water lightly over paintings to maintain a wet workable area.

The most important aspect of the development of our new watercolour paper was to create a surface that welcomes both pencils and water. A rough surface is not suitable for pencil work as the texture of the paper interferes with the drawing. The areas of rough texture will leave a white mark which means it takes a lot more effort to cover the paper. Painting Pencils
One of the most exciting developments in art has been the introduction of water-soluble colour pencils and our Lakeland version was one of the first. Lakeland Painting can be used dry just like normal colour pencils, but brush over your drawing with a wetted paintbrush and it magically turns into a painting.

Colouring Pencils
One of the earliest pleasures in life is colouring, whether youre creating your own works of art or simply using a colouring book. There are three pencil sizes to choose from; Lakeland Colouring is a traditional, round colour pencil with a smooth 3.3mm colour core that can be mixed and blended to create a rainbow of different hues. Lakeland Colourthin is ideal for older children. It has a slim hexagonal barrel and slightly thinner core than Lakeland Colouring, making it perfect for more detailed work. And for the little ones, Lakeland Jumbos 11mm diameter barrel is specially designed for small hands to grip.

The Cumberland Pencil Company is delighted to announce the inaugural Derwent Art Prize for works created in pencil.
The aim of the Prize is to reward excellence through showcasing the very best international works created in pencil. The Prize offers a total of 8,750 to artists working in this versatile medium and is open to artists over 18 throughout the world. Entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of selectors: Yvonne Crossley, Stephen Farthing RA Fisun Gner Deadline for entries will be 1 July 2013. An exhibition of the shortlisted works will be on show at the prestigious Mall Galleries, London, 16th - 21st September.
