FIRE RATED PLASTIC LAMINATE COUNTERTOPS

Where fire rated and UL labeled countertops are provided, the following rules apply: 1) The countertop must be within the minimum and maximum dimensions allowed by UL see manufacturers data sheet and countertop shop drawing. 2) Single piece countertops are provided for openings up to 10 wide. Two-piece countertops with a center joint are provided for openings from 10 to 16 wide. 3) Per Cornells UL procedure, all surfaces of the countertop including those that are not visible must be laminated. 4) Once the countertop is installed, the UL label must be visible at all times for inspection purposes. Cornell locates the label underneath the countertop, on the coil side, at the right hand end of the sill. However, the label can be located elsewhere if the label will not be accessible for inspection; in these situations, the Architect or GC must designate where the label should be located. 5) All fabrication dimensions for fire rated countertops are considered DESIRED dimensions, and therefore the Architect MUST prescribe all dimensions. All other trades must work to the Architects prescribed fabrication dimensions. Per UL, the countertop CANNOT be modified in the field; no holes in the countertop (for electrical cords, etc.), no trimming the countertop to fit, no modifications of any kind. Therefore, the countertop dimensions must be provided by the Architect on the shop drawings as part of the submittal. 6) The laminate manufacturers name, laminate color, and catalog number MUST be provided by the Architect, GC or owner on the countertop shop drawing. Pricing is based upon laminate manufacturers standard plastic laminates. a) Important Note: Not all laminates are approved for fire rated countertops and special laminates are subject to additional charges. Therefore, the desired laminate information should be provided in a timely manner to allow the door dealer to submit this information to the manufacturer to ensure that the desired laminate is approved and to be able to advise of additional pricing based on laminate selection when necessary. 7) It is best to provide radius corners on the public/corridor side of the countertop (where applicable) to prevent injury to people walking by. Architect to provide this direction on the countertop shop drawing. a) Note: 2 radius standard, 1 to 3 radiuses are available for rounded corners. 8) It is best to provide radius edges on the tenant side of the countertop. Architect to provide this direction on the countertop shop drawing. Per Cornells UL procedure, bull-nose edges or any other such add-on type items are not approved. a) Note: Only radius edges are available. b) Special Note: A radius edge can not be provided along with radius corners on the same side of a countertop. However, one edge of a countertop may have a radius and the other side may be square with radius corners. 9) For installation purposes, adequate mounting support (backing) inside the fire rated wall must be provided by others.

10) Cornells UL requirements for the installation of the labeled countertops prescribe angle clips to support the countertop no other methods are approved. If the countertop extends past the face of the wall more than 6 (standard), additional support (by others) should be provided. It is permissible for other trades to provide trim work to conceal the angle mounting clips if desired note that this type of work is not included as part of the door contract. 11) For Face of Wall Mounting: The countertop must extend a minimum of 6 into the room that the door (coil) is installed. The countertop must extend a minimum of 4 beyond each jamb on the door side, under the door guides. For T shaped countertops, the countertop must extend through the opening at least to the face of the finish on the side of the wall opposite the side the door is being installed. A 1 projection beyond the wall is standard. The fire rated wall at each jamb and below the countertop must align with one another. For Between Jambs Mounting: The countertop must extend a minimum of 6 beyond the centerline of the door curtain toward the side that the door coil is installed. 12) For H and Offset H shaped countertops, the overall width and height of the opening must allow for the installation of the countertop i.e. the countertop must fit into the opening diagonally and then slide down into its final horizontal position. These type countertops used in wide but short openings need to be evaluated up front. 13) Special shapes and/or radiuses must be submitted to the manufacturer and possibly UL for approval; not all shapes and/or radiuses are permissible. 14) Manufacturer supplied multilevel countertops are NOT available. 15) No caulking, fire caulking, mounting angle trim, backer-rod, etc. is required by UL, and therefore will not be provided as part of the installation scope of work; this work may be provided by others.
