Tiger Volleyball Players Are Putting Up Huge Numbers I will keep saying this, with no disrespect to the other three schools I cover, becaue I encourage fans to go to all home matches, however, if you havent seen the Tipton volleyball team play this year, what are you waiting for. The Tigers are playing a brand of volleyball that is exciting to watch and they have just enough of a chip on their shouldar to make any fan of Tipton athletics proud they are representing the town and the school. The Tigers are at home Thursday against Bellevue and next Tuesday, October 8 against Wilton. Tipton sports a record of 14-7 and is on pace to better their record of 18-16 last year, possibly reaching 20 match wins for the first time in a long while. Look for results from this past weekends North Cedar tournament in next weeks paper. Tipton served 89-for-95 with Kofron leading the way with a perfect 19-for-19 night. Ashley Miller had 12 kills and Taylor Kurtz 11 for MidPrairie. Miller also had a team high 19 digs. Courtney Shalla had 36 assists and Taylor Kurtz served 17-for-17 to lead the Golden Hawks.

on the court this season. For starters, sophomore Ashley Smith is 9th in the entire state of Iowa in digs for all classes. Smith has 340 digs and averages 6.3 per set this season so far. She is 149 digs away from the school record for most in a season set by Morgan Maltas in 2008. Her total is second in class 3A behind Katelyn Stearns of Gilbert (361). Her total is also the tops in the RVC South, by nearly 50 digs. Smith was the top Digger for the entire state for the week of September 18th-25th. Smith broke the school record for most digs in a match with 49 last week surpassing the previous total by Kara Kreman (43 in 2005). As a team, the Tigers have also broken the school record in digs for a match with 111 during last weeks match against Iowa City Regina. Jill Kofron is also tied for 12th in class 3A with 213 digs and third in the RVC South in dig totals. Alyssa Crock is sixth in the RVC South wtih 148 digs. Kofron is fourth in class 3A in kills with 211. That total also is tops in

the RVC South as of Monday, September 30. Michele OHaver had the fourth highest kill total in the RVC South as well with 146. Fundamental Basketball Clinic Starting Soon Do you have a 3rd grade or 4th grade girl that likes to play basketball? Are you interested in helping them get better as a player? Soon, there will be a solution to this. The Tipton Tiger Youth Basketball program will be hosting fundamental clinics every Sunday afternoon from 4-5 p.m. at the Tipton Middle School gym. The clinics will run from October through February. There is no cost associated with this. The clinics will help hone the fundamentals of your player essential to play this great game. Participants attending should be dressed and ready to go in the Middle School commons area by 3:45 with appropriate shoes and attire. Score After First Quarter MidPrairie 0, Tipton 0 Second Quarter: Tipton scored the games first points early in the second quarter on a 56-yard touchdown run by Jordan Challis that split the Golden Hawk defense down the middle. The Tiger sophomores scoring run was his second touchdown in as many weeks. The Tiger scoring drive spanned 80 yards in four plays and ran off only 0:58 of game clock. On Mid-Prairies next drive the Golden Hawks fumbled and Tipton recovered. Tipton capitalized, marching down the field in a 12-play, 60-yard drive that culminated with an Alex Wiley touchdown pass to Josh Smith. After Askil Haagensens second PAT of the game, Tipton led 14-0 with 3:15 left before halftime. Mid-Prairie answered the Tiger score with their first touchdown of the football game. The Golden Hawks used a 61-yard pass play from Reid Miller to Austin Errthum to get to the Tiger two-yard line. A Miller to Zach Schwartz touchdown pass put the score at 14-7 with 1:21 left in the half. Halftime Mid-Prairie 14, Tipton 7 Third Quarter: Mid-Prairie used a 25-yard kickoff return by Canaan Powell to start the second half. On the first play of their first second half drive, Austin Errthum rushed 72 yards for the game tying touchdown. The Tigers couldnt an answer in their next two drive, running 11 plays, but gaining only 27 yards. Mid-Prairie however, could not get more points either, totalling 27 yards on 12 plays on their following two drives. Tipton started moving the football late in the quarter on a drive that would extend to the start of the final quarter. Score After Third Quarter Mid-Prairie 14, Tipton 14 Fourth Quarter: Tipton capped off a 13-play drive with a go-ahead field goal attempt from 29 yards by Askil Haagensen. The attempt was wide right as the Golden Hawk defense disrupted the Tigers attempt. Mid-Prairie then chewed up 4:43 off the game clock with a 11-play drive that ended with a Reid Miller, 6-yard touchdown pass to Zach Schwartz to put Mid-Prairie up 21-14. Tipton had one more chance and they took advantage of it. Tipton drove to the Golden Hawk 20 in 11 plays that took 4:02 off the clock, but a Mid-Prairie defender broke up a screen pass to Clay Keller with 1:31 left to play in the game. FINAL SCORE: Mid-Prairie 21, Tipton 14.

Tigers 3rd, Knights 10th At Solon Invitational


SOLON The Tipton boys cross-country team traveled to Solon on Monday September 23 to run at a 11-team meet. There, the Tigers finished in third place with 115 team points. Iowa City, City High won the meet with 27 points and Mt. Vernon-Lisbon placed second with 111 team points, four ahead of the Tigers place. Tiptons Eric Lenz continued to run well, winning the individual race, finishing first in a time of 16:29. Matt Pelzer also finished in the top-10 in 8th place in a time of 17:26. Other Tipton finishers were: 31st, Kody Wallick in 18:35, 33rd, Mark Becker in 18:39, 42nd, Cory Mueller in 19:05 and 55th, Dan Charette in 19:43. North Cedar placed 10th as a team with 243 team points. Other River Valley Conference teams at the meet were Northeast Goose Lake 6th and West Liberty 11th. Riley Holst was the top North Cedar finisher with a 24th place finish in a time of 18:22. Jacob Techau placed 35th in 18:47 and Levi Ruchotzke placed 39th in a time of 18:57. Other North Cedar finishers were Andrew Schroeder 71st in 22:10 and Cole Hansen 74th in 24:42.

Tipton JV Boys Place 6th SOLON The Tipton junior varsity boys team placed 6th in the team standings with 122 team points. Iowa City, City High was the meet champ with 15 team points. Mt. Vernon-Lisbon was second with 66 team points. Malte Hermann was the top Tipton finisher with a 19th place finish in 19:49. Other Tipton finishers were: 35th Alyn Redlinger 35th in 20:41; 37th Andrew Stanbro in 20:54; 40th Tyler Hatland in 21:06; Sam Bierman 42nd in 21:21; Jesse Beranek 48th in 22:01 and Manny Stegall 53rd in 22:37.
