Richfield resident wins Open B division in ATV motocross, brother third in another division
Richfield residents Austin and Evan Clemens are back at work and school this fall after a summer that saw both put in stellar performances on the Mountain Dew ATV Motocross National Championship tour. Austin, 19, won the title in the Open B Division, winning races in Unadilla, NY; Steel City, Penn., and Hurricane Mills, Tenn. Austin Clemens, a 2012 Hartford Union High School (HUHS) graduate, is a full-time student at Moraine Park Technical College and works at Neu's Building Supply in Menomonee Falls. Evan Clemens, 16, a senior at HUHS, placed third in the Open C Division, winning races in Georgia and Kentucky. He also placed sixth in the Production C class, winning a race in Muddy Creek, TN. Open B, Open C and Production C are three of several amateur classes on the national tour. During a recent interview, Austin said he has been racing on the ATV circuit for approximately five years after first seeing friends running in national events. His first race was in August 2008 "and I've loved it ever since." The Loretta Lynn's race was his third win of the season in what was the series final. Austin said he was excited at the final result. "It was a beautiful kind of experience. There was so much joy for what I had worked for this year," he said. As for the future, Austin said he plans to race "as long as my body will take it." For Evan Clemens, it was his third full season on the tour. Evan said that he and his brother started at the local level before going to the national level. According to Evan, he was essentially learning his first year on the tour in which he tried to pace himself with the other riders. A strong finish at a race in Ohio in 2012 showed he was getting better. That set Evan Clemens is pictured after a race in the stage for this year, which included several top five finishes in addi-

Homecoming Hullabaloo set for Oct. 11

Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderful patients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayers for a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind our readership about one of the many important reasons to see their dentist regularly. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be 42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths. Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head and neck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chance of spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cell carcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makes oral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appears as a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancer cell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as a result of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repair themselves. Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth? Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivary glands and lymph tissue. What should I look for? Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesion on the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually pale colored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An early warning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or a red patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongue problems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain may be a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless. How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not? A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion. However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A noninvasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out the presence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method for determining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present is through biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopic evaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous. What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determined to be cancerous? Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area in question. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can also be used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, and size of the lesion. What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer? People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are people that have been diagnosed with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which Michael Douglas recently associated with his throat cancer. Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposure to radiation may also be at higher risk. We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for your complimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease that can be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental we perform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a new patient and at each re-care visit! Local pizzeria to raise funds for breast cancer research

Local pizzeria Pizza Station is offering cancer patients across the country a Slice of Hope by donating 15 percent of its sales from Friday, Oct. 11 to the Seattle-based Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation. October 11 has been designated as National Pizza Party Day by Slice of Hope, a charitable initiative of the pizza industry, and pizzerias nationwide will be donating funds to the foundation that day. Slice of Hope has banded together these eateries in an effort to fight this disease that impacts hundreds of thousands of individuals each year. In fact, more than 190,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year and approximately 40,000 women will die from the disease. Thats approximately 110 breast cancer deaths daily, and Pizza Station owners Tim and Barb Holtz and their staff say that is too many. There isnt a person in this country who hasnt felt the effects of breast cancer in some way, Tim said. Whether youve had the disease yourself, or a family member or friend has had it, its safe to say youve been affected by breast cancer. Pizza Station wants to do something to help end this disease. Tim encourages the public to eat at Pizza Station on Oct. 11. Please come down to Pizza Station that night to show your support of this cause, he said. The Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation has committed to giving 100 percent of the Slice of Hope proceeds to several of the nations leading breast cancer research labs. Slice of Hope is spearheaded by Pizza Today editor Jeremy White. White, along with the magazine publisher Pete Lachapelle and a small team of cyclists,, will bike through New England Oct. 9-12 to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The cycling route will include stops in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Pizza Station is located N168W22224 Main Street #D, at the corner of Highway 60 and Country Road P in the BP strip mall, in Jackson.

Archery range opens at Town Hall park

Another option for recreation activities debuted in Jackson this fall. A groundbreaking was held for an archery range at the Jackson Town Hall Park Sept. 12. When reached for comment last week, Jackson Joint Parks and Recreation Director Kelly Valentino said she first proposed the archery range to the Town Board in fall 2011, which voted to move ahead with the project. According to Valentino, in spring 2012 intern Billy Welacha laid the groundwork for the development of the range. Welacha worked with Barb and Norb Yogerst, who run an archery program through a 4-H club. I dont think this project could have happened without their guidance, Valentino said. In addition, Valentino said Cade Alcox made several parts of the archery range part of his Eagle Scout project, while members of Alcoxs Boy Scout troop 765 contributed with spreading mulch and in organizing the dedication ceremony. Valentino said that in addition to being used for recreation programming, 4-H Clubs and local scouts will be using the range. She said the facility is a recreational range focuses on families and instruction. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Protect your winter landscape from hungry wildlife

BY MELINDA MYERS Theres no doubt that managing critters in the landscape can be a challenge especially as food supplies start to dwindle. If you are battling with rabbits, deer, groundhogs or other wildlife, don't let down your guard as the growing season begins to wind down. Be proactive. Start before they get into the habit of dining on your landscape. It is easier to keep them away than break the dining habit. Fence them out. Fencing is the best defense against most wildlife. A four feet tall fence around a small garden will keep out rabbits. Secure the bottom tight to the ground or bury it several inches to prevent rabbits and voles from crawling underneath. Or fold the bottom of the fence outward, making sure its tight to the ground. Animals tend not to crawl under when the bottom skirt faces away from the garden. Go deeper, at least 12 to 18 inches, if you are trying to discourage woodchucks. And make sure the gate is secure. Many hungry animals have found their way into the garden through openings around and under the gate. A five foot fence around small garden areas can help safeguard your plantings against hungry deer. Some gardeners report success surrounding their garden with fishing line mounted on posts at one and three foot heights. Break out the repellents. Homemade and commercial repellents can be used. Apply before the animals start feeding and reapply as directed. Consider using a natural product like Messinas Animal Stopper (www.Messinas.com). It is made of herbs, safe to use and smells good. Scare em away. Blow up owls, clanging pans, rubber snakes, slivers of deodorant soap, handfuls of human hair and noise makers are scare tactics that have been used by gardeners for years. Consider your environment when selecting a tactic. Urban animals are used to the sound and smell of people. Alternate scare tactics for more effective control. The animals won't be afraid of a snake that hasn't moved in weeks. Combine tactics. Use a mix of fencing, scare tactics and repellents. Keep monitoring for damage. If there are enough animals and they are hungry, they will eat just about anything. Dont forget about nature. Welcome hawks and fox into your landscape. Using less pesticides and tolerating some critters, their food source, will encourage them to visit your yard. These natural pest controllers help keep the garden-munching critters under control. And most importantly, don't give up. A bit of persistence, variety and adaptability is the key to success. Investing some time now will not only deter existing critters from dining in your landscape, but will also reduce the risk of animals moving in next season._ Gardening expert, TV/radio host, author & columnist Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Cant Miss Small Space Gardening. She hosts The Great Courses "How to Grow Anything" DVD series and the nationally syndicated Melindas Garden Moment segments. Myers is also a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine. Myers web site, www.melindamyers.com, offers gardening videos, podcasts, and garden tips.
