Falls resident upgrades Granville Dog Park for Eagle Scout project
Area dog owners from will appreciate the improvements made to the Granville Dog Park as part of an Eagle Scout project by Menomonee Falls resident Jordan Owens. The dog park is located at 11718 W. Good Hope, near the citys border with the village. As part of his Eagle Scout project, Owens hosted two clean up days in June, which included cutting down dead trees, trimming the main trails, hauling brush and laying six truckloads of mulch (which was provided by the Milwaukee County Parks Department). Owens was assisted by approximately 14 people for the first day and eight the second. Also as part of the project, the play/equipment area was rebuilt, and ramps, run-thru barrels, agility poles, weave poles, and two benches with a small table between were installed. An old kiosk was also removed and a new one installed in its place. When reached for comment last week, Owens said when it came time to consider an Eagle Scout project, he thought about improvements at the park because his family takes their dogs there. Besides the equipment needing an upgrade, the trails also required some attention. Owens said it took only a few weeks to get the necessary approvals from Milwaukee County to proceed with the project. A major challenge was having the

Falls Senior Center accredited by state organization

Louise Schmidt, older adult and volunteer coordinator for the Menomonee Falls Community Recreation and Education department, said she had hoped to get the Senior Center accredited before retirement. Schmidt achieved that goal in her first attempt and one of the last things she did in her near decade-long tenure. The Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers (WASC) sent the good news last month. Accreditation is a great accomplishment, highlighting your organizations commitment to excellence in programs and activities. It also documents your dedication to operating at the highest standards possible in a Senior Center, the letter from WASC states. The Menomonee Falls Senior Center is one of less than 30 accredited centers across the state. Successfully achieving accreditation status takes the work of many people both in the senior center and in the community. When these two groups work together the rewards will be felt for many years to come, said Joan Erickson, director of the Community Education and Recreation Department. Congratulations go out to Louise Schmidt for a well-deserved achievement that she pursued diligently. The accreditation could serve as a crown jewel of her many accomplishments with the department, Schmidt put together a committee including center members Dick Kasper, Marilyn Jaeger, Mary Jane Mroczek and John Clancey. The group met monthly from February through May in preparation. It filled out 43 pages worth of questions and was interviewed by three WASC representatives. They ask about everything from the programs you offer to when the bug guy comes and sprays the building, Schmidt said. It was pretty thorough. They checked the bathrooms and the fire alarms. The process was even an education for Schmidt. I learned a lot about finance ... how the district runs, she said. The WASC learned about one of the centers unique qualities. Were a rarity, a district that has a senior center connected to the district, Schmidt said. They didnt know exactly how we fit in. We talked about that for quite a while. And Schmidt smiled for quite a while upon learning the center was indeed accredited. It was what I called my bucket list, the last thing I wanted to do before I retired, she said. Im proud of the people who helped me. They really did a great service for the center. It will be five years before the center needs to apply for reaccreditation. Schmidt said the first time is the most difficult. It will be years that the fruits of Schmidt and her committees labor will be felt as the committee will continue to meet every three months to consistently improve the center. Louise and the committee have set the ground work for continued success and improvement of senior programming, said Erickson. Schmidt retires at the end of this month. The capable Lori Oertel steps into her role to take the center to the next level. Story courtesy of the School District of Menomonee Falls

MenoHarmonee chorus prepares for cabaret show

A tradition in music that started in 1962 is still a part of Menomonee Falls, and residents will have an opportunity to hear it within the next few weeks. The MenoHarmonee Barbershop quartet will be holding its upcoming Swing in Fall Cabaret at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at St. James Parish, W220 N6588 Town Hall Road. The show will feature MenoHarmonee followed by the womens quartet Noted. One Accord and accordionist will also perform at the event. Tickets to the event are $15. The chorus has two major shows each one one each spring and the fall cabaret. The chorus currently has 14 members. During the taping of the Village Voices program at the Falls Cable Access studio, Membership Chairman Rick Van Gomple said the chorus is looking for younger members, and noted that several members in the chorus are in their 80s. Rehearsals are on each Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at St. Pauls Lutheran Church on Appleton Avenue in Menomonee Falls. We have a wonderful time, (we) keep it a short night and its all about having fun, he said. Van Gomple said that in addition to MenoHarmonee, there are similar chorus groups in Milwaukee, West Allis, and Greendale. In recent years, chorus groups in Oconomowoc, Waukesha, and Ozaukee have disbanded. Van Gomple said he really wants to get this chapter back again. Theres no excuse for Germantown (and) Menomonee Falls not having a strong chapter, Van Gomple said. Van Gomple said that in barbershop singing, the younger members have been are sons of members. He said the chorus is trying to reach out to attract younger members. Van Gomple recalled attending a youth festival two years ago that featured 740 children sponsored by other barbershop chorus group. The harmonies is what brings them back, he said. By Thomas J. dog/exercise park. It was a long project and it was well worth it, he said. Owens, a freshman student at Menomonee Falls High School, has been involved in scouting for more than eight years. He started out with Cub Scout Pack 109 and then crossed over into Troop 109 in 2010. I joined scouting for the adventure and friendship. I have been camping in caves, stayed overnight in a submarine, and just this last July, spent 10 days at the Summit in West Virginia at the National Jamboree with 40,000 other Scouts, Owens said. During the National Jamboree, Owens had the opportunity to tour the Bull Run and Gettysburg Civil War battlefield site and visited the many war memorials in Washington D.C. Scouting has given me self-esteem, tons of knowledge and skills, and leadership abilities that I will always call upon, he said. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS

FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning October 8th and continuing through November 2nd. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water. If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from being drawn into your water piping system. If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY. Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers. 2nd ANNUAL
Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderful patients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayers for a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind our readership about one of the many important reasons to see their dentist regularly. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be 42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths. Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head and neck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chance of spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cell carcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makes oral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appears as a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancer cell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as a result of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repair themselves. Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth? Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivary glands and lymph tissue. What should I look for? Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesion on the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually pale colored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An early warning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or a red patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongue problems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain may be a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless. How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not? A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion. However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A noninvasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out the presence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method for determining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present is through biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopic evaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous. What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determined to be cancerous? Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area in question. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can also be used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, and size of the lesion. What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer? People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are people that have been diagnosed with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which Michael Douglas recently associated with his throat cancer. Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposure to radiation may also be at higher risk. We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for your complimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease that can be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental we perform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a new patient and at each re-care visit! VILLAGE OF GERMANTOWN
For your convenience the Village Public Works Department is scheduling a Fall brush pick-up starting the second Monday in October (October 14, 2013). Although this process will take approximately 2 weeks to complete, we will not be extending the pick-up, or picking up brush that is put out after Sunday, October 13, 2013. Limbs shall be no more than 6 foot in length and placed at the curb with the trunk facing the street for easier handling. Please tie branches 2 or smaller into bundles no larger than 2 feet in diameter using twine or light rope. Your cooperation with this will greatly increase the efficiency at which we can pick up the brush. Brush in containers WILL NOT be picked up as too often there is yardwaste in the bottom of the container. Yardwaste and leaves are not included in the pick-up. We encourage you to take your yardwaste to the Recycling Center. Please be aware that raking leaves into the street area is against Village Ordinance and the Village of Germantown WILL NOT pick up such leaves. Again, we encourage you to take your leaves to the Recycling Center.

Fox Bros Piggly Wiggly collecting coats for area children in need
For the annual Condella's Coats for Kids campaign, parent can drop off slightly used children's coats at all Fox Bros Piggly Wiggly stores now through Saturday, Oct. 12. Fox Bros is a partner in the 2013 Condella's Coats for Kids campaign organized by WITI FOX 6. This is the 28th year of the campaign that has helped thousands and thousands of area children. To celebrate the campaign, FOXTOBERFEST will be held at all Fox Bros stores Oct. 12. Special sales, tastings and activities for the family including Guess the Pumpkin's Weight and children's coloring contests will be a part of the festivities. In conjunction with FOXTOBERFEST, Fox Bros is asking that families remember !others and donate coats. "Providing a coat can make a difference for a family living in poverty," said Major Deborah Sjogren, Milwaukee Salvation Army. "As daily living costs rise, every dollar counts and a free coat allows for dollars to be spent in other areas such as food, rent or heat." Vince Condella, WITI FOX 6 Chief Meteorologist, has been leading the campaign since the beginning. "'I am counting on the generosity of everyone again this year," said Condella. "This entire effort is completely dependent on one person helping another by donating a coat." Partners with WITI FOX 6 in Condella's Coats for Kids includes ITU who donates the washing of the coats and Bonded Transportation Solutions, who pick up coats at the donation sites. Steinhafels, Johnson Bank and Subway Restaurants are drop off sites and the Salvation Army works with area schools to distribute coats to school children who need them.

A future in manufacturing: Expo exposes students to different career options

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Manufacturing is part of the future in America, and a five-year-old event seeks to get that message out to tomorrows workforce. The Manufacturing Career Expo, which will be held Oct. 9-10 at Davians Banquet Center in Menomonee Falls, will connect students from three school districts Menomonee Falls, Germantown and Hamilton with 23 manufacturers. Students from each school will attend the event at separate times. In addition, the event is open to the public from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 9 and 2-4 p.m. Oct. 10. Todays manufacturing can be described as advanced manufacturing requiring precision, robotics, computer programming, automation, innovation, lean, requiring learned skills taking place in clean, safe environments. Careers in manufacturing provide family sustaining incomes, the Germantown Chamber stated in a news release promoting the event. The Germantown chamber co-sponsors the event with the Menomonee Falls and Sussex chambers. More than 1,300 students have attended the event since it was first started. Lynn Grgich, Germantown chamber director, said the program was first started at the Menomonee Falls chamber with a focus group of manufacturers looking for a way to utilize chamber resource in securing future employees. Because Germantown and Sussex also have a large number of manufacturers in our communities and are logistically so close, the Menomonee Falls Chamber invited us to partner with them in this endeavor. The Chambers are committed to this event because our manufacturers see value in it, Grgich said. While the event was focused strictly on the students in the three districts the first few years, last year hours were set aside to be open to the public. After holding the event for a few years, it was evident we could host more students. So in 2012 we started offering an open-to-thepublic time period and publicized it to post secondary students at the two-year schools, middle school students and their parents, and employees and their students at the companies who were represented at the event, Grgich said. Grgich said invitations for this years event have been sent out to high schools in Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties. She said organizers anticipate 500 students will attend the Thursday times. Besides potential employees who are currently students in the schools, Menomonee Falls Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Toni Yates added the expo is also seeking to inform others in the community about careers in the manufacturing sector. It is important to get the message of manufacturing out to the parents as well. We need parents to realize that manufacturing today is not the manufacturing of old. Manufacturing

Local pizzeria to raise funds for breast cancer research

Local pizzeria Pizza Station is offering cancer patients across the country a Slice of Hope by donating 15 percent of its sales from Friday, Oct. 11 to the Seattle-based Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation. October 11 has been designated as National Pizza Party Day by Slice of Hope, a charitable initiative of the pizza industry, and pizzerias nationwide will be donating funds to the foundation that day. Slice of Hope has banded together these eateries in an effort to fight this disease that impacts hundreds of thousands of individuals each year. In fact, more than 190,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year and approximately 40,000 women will die from the disease. Thats approximately 110 breast cancer deaths daily, and Pizza Station owners Tim and Barb Holtz and their staff say that is too many. There isnt a person in this country who hasnt felt the effects of breast cancer in some way, Tim said. Whether youve had the disease yourself, or a family member or friend has had it, its safe to say youve been affected by breast cancer. Pizza Station wants to do something to help end this disease. Tim encourages the public to eat at Pizza Station on Oct. 11. Please come down to Pizza Station that night to show your support of this cause, he said. The Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation has committed to giving 100 percent of the Slice of Hope proceeds to several of the nations leading breast cancer research labs. Slice of Hope is spearheaded by Pizza Today editor Jeremy White. White, along with the magazine publisher Pete Lachapelle and a small team of cyclists,, will bike through New England Oct. 9-12 to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The cycling route will include stops in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Pizza Station is located N168W22224 Main Street #D, at the corner of Highway 60 and Country Road P in the BP strip mall, in Jackson.

Tip of the Week: There are a lot of things to think about when choosing a turtle. Some of these things include knowing how big the turtle will get, knowing what that turtle will eat, and also what kind of habitat that particular turtle will need. Knowing all this before you buy a turtle will help reduce the stress for both you, and your new pet. License Number #266935-DS

Archery range opens at Town Hall park

Another option for recreation activities debuted in Jackson this fall. A groundbreaking was held for an archery range at the Jackson Town Hall Park Sept. 12. When reached for comment last week, Jackson Joint Parks and Recreation Director Kelly Valentino said she first proposed the archery range to the Town Board in fall 2011, which voted to move ahead with the project. According to Valentino, in spring 2012 intern Billy Welacha laid the groundwork for the development of the range. Welacha worked with Barb and Norb Yogerst, who run an archery program through a 4-H club. I dont think this project could have happened without their guidance, Valentino said. In addition, Valentino said Cade Alcox made several parts of the archery range part of his Eagle Scout project, while members of Alcoxs Boy Scout troop 765 contributed with spreading mulch and in organizing the dedication ceremony. Valentino said that in addition to being used for recreation programming, 4-H Clubs and local scouts will be using the range. She said the facility is a recreational range focuses on families and instruction. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Germantown runs past Grafton, within 1 win of playoffs

Grafton stayed even with Germantown for a quarter before the Warhawks scored three touchdowns in nine minutes on the way to a 35-0 win. "They came at us hard, they're a good team, " Germantown Coach Jake Davis said of Grafton, which was celebrating Homecoming week. "They played hard, they gave us their best and we decided to get in a grove and get it going." With the win, Germantown is now one win away from qualifying for the playoffs. Germantown opened the scoring as Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. connected with Nick Holcomb on a 49-yard pass play at the 9:25 mark of the second quarter. Germantown held Grafton on the next possession and then got the ball on the 25-yard line after a bad punt. Wide receiver Connor Schulz then took a handoff and connected with Holcomb on a 12-yard pass play at the 6:34 mark to finish a four-play drive. Germantown's third score came as Joe Lemerond scored on an 11-yard run at the 1:56 mark to make the score 21-0 to finish off a three-play drive. Germantown had one more opportunity to score before halftime but Grafton intercepted the ball in the end zone. Germantown's other scores came on a 2yard run by Lemerond at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter and a 7-yard pass play from Lawhorn to Walters with 11:49 remaining. Lemerond led Germantown with 99 yards rushing in 19 carries. Davis said he was pleased with the balance on offense between the run and pass. Afterward, Germantown had a 3-1 North Shore Conference record and a 5-1 overall mark. Germantown could clinch a spot in the playoffs with a win over Nicolet Oct. 4. Menomonee Falls 49, Wauwatosa East 3: Menomonee Falls came within one win of a playoff bid with a win over the Raiders. Christian Almonte ran 20 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns while Adam Vechart ran seven times for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Bryce Murtry ran four times for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Menomonee Falls final score came on a 9yard run by Boyd Sansone. Afterward, Menomonee Falls had a 3-1 Greater Metro Conference record and a 5-1 overall mark. Marquette 38, Hamilton 21: Hamilton's record dropped to 2-2 in the Greater Metro Conference and 3-3 overall following the loss. Girls volleyball: Falls second at Sprawl

Menomonee Falls opened the Sprawl Sept. 27 with wins over Wisconsin Lutheran (25-23, 25-19), Manitowoc Lincoln (25-20, 27-25) and Arrowhead (25-13, 25-11). The next morning, Menomonee Falls beat Catholic Memorial (25-22, 25-16) and Westosha Central (25-21, 25-18) to advance to the gold medal bracket. In the semifinal, Menomonee Falls beat Greater Metro Conference rival Divine Savior Holy Angels 25-16, 25-22. The Indians then finished the day with a 24-26, 1825 loss to East Troy. It is the second weekend tournament loss to East Troy for Menomonee Falls, who lost to the top-ranked Division 2 squad at the Thomas More/Homestead Joust in August. Im very pleased with what we did today, Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said. Weve played in the two biggest tournaments of the year and weve lost to the best team in the state both times. You cant complain about that too much. Bruns noted that in addition to the Sprawl, it was also Homecoming weekend for Menomonee Falls. Against East Troy, Bruns said its necessary to serve tough to keep them out of their offense. We had good stretches of that in the first game but not enough overall in both games to be effective, he said. Coming out of the Sprawl, Bruns said his team is healthy. Im very pleased with where are right now. Weve just got to maintain that moving forward. In conference play Oct. 1, Menomonee Falls beat West Allis Hale 22-25, 25-20,2515, 25-11. The Germantown girls volleyball team finished second at its home invitational Sept. 28. Germantown opened the tournament with wins over Slinger (25-16, 25-13), Hamilton (25-16, 25-12), Franklin (25-11, 25-23) and Whitnall (25-20, 24-26, 15-13). Germantown lost to New Berlin Eisenhower 25-17, 25-22 before ending the day with a 25-11, 25-10 win over Greendale Martin Luther. In conference play Oct. 1, Germantown lost to Nicolet 17-25, 22-25, 26-24, 18-25) Hamilton lost all its matches at the Germantown Invite, falling to Martin Luther (21-25, 25-27), Whitnall (20-25, 19-25), Germantown, Slinger (21-25, 13-25), Franklin (23-25, 23-25) and Eisenhower (11-25, 1625). Hamilton then lost to Brookfield East in Greater Metro Conference play Oct. 1, 19-25, 8-25, 18-25).

The Warhawks other goals came from Lucas Sbraglia (assist from Junior Beltran) and Beltran (assist by Cizewski). Germantown followed that victory with a 9-0 win at Port Washington Oct. 1. ...Parents and educators invited to event

From page 6
today is a high tech, highly skilled, well-paying industry that is suited perfectly for the students of today and their 21st century skill set, Yates said. She added that attendance has increased at the event over the past several years, so the word is getting out about manufacturing as a career option. With all things it takes time and a shift in thinking, she said. When interviewed at last years event, Tim Sabinash of Magnatek noted that in addition to community residents and parents of students from the Menomonee Falls, Germantown and Sussex areas attending the open house, the 2012 event drew students from the Brookfield Central Project Lead the Way program also attended the event. We are able to put a lot of great manufacturers in one place, have excellent displays that really have a chance for companies to show what their wares are and give a good view of manufacturing in the 21st Century, Sabinash said. This isnt only for the kids, its for the parents as well and thats where you really get the engagement. Weve got to get the parents to understand the great opportunities that are out there in manufacturing today.

Protect your winter landscape from hungry wildlife

BY MELINDA MYERS Theres no doubt that managing critters in the landscape can be a challenge especially as food supplies start to dwindle. If you are battling with rabbits, deer, groundhogs or other wildlife, don't let down your guard as the growing season begins to wind down. Be proactive. Start before they get into the habit of dining on your landscape. It is easier to keep them away than break the dining habit. Fence them out. Fencing is the best defense against most wildlife. A four feet tall fence around a small garden will keep out rabbits. Secure the bottom tight to the ground or bury it several inches to prevent rabbits and voles from crawling underneath. Or fold the bottom of the fence outward, making sure its tight to the ground. Animals tend not to crawl under when the bottom skirt faces away from the garden. Go deeper, at least 12 to 18 inches, if you are trying to discourage woodchucks. And make sure the gate is secure. Many hungry animals have found their way into the garden through openings around and under the gate. A five foot fence around small garden areas can help safeguard your plantings against hungry deer. Some gardeners report success surrounding their garden with fishing line mounted on posts at one and three foot heights. Break out the repellents. Homemade and commercial repellents can be used. Apply before the animals start feeding and reapply as directed. Consider using a natural product like Messinas Animal Stopper (www.Messinas.com). It is made of herbs, safe to use and smells good. Scare em away. Blow up owls, clanging pans, rubber snakes, slivers of deodorant soap, handfuls of human hair and noise makers are scare tactics that have been used by gardeners for years. Consider your environment when selecting a tactic. Urban animals are used to the sound and smell of people. Alternate scare tactics for more effective control. The animals won't be afraid of a snake that hasn't moved in weeks. Combine tactics. Use a mix of fencing, scare tactics and repellents. Keep monitoring for damage. If there are enough animals and they are hungry, they will eat just about anything. Dont forget about nature. Welcome hawks and fox into your landscape. Using less pesticides and tolerating some critters, their food source, will encourage them to visit your yard. These natural pest controllers help keep the garden-munching critters under control. And most importantly, don't give up. A bit of persistence, variety and adaptability is the key to success. Investing some time now will not only deter existing critters from dining in your landscape, but will also reduce the risk of animals moving in next season._ Gardening expert, TV/radio host, author & columnist Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Cant Miss Small Space Gardening. She hosts The Great Courses "How to Grow Anything" DVD series and the nationally syndicated Melindas Garden Moment segments. Myers is also a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine. Myers web site, www.melindamyers.com, offers gardening videos, podcasts, and garden tips.

Job Interview 2.0 - How Technology is Transforming the Job Hunt

Technology is streamlining the hiring process. Managers use it to eliminate useless -- and costly -interviews and prescreen candidates before bringing them in for in-person interviews. And job hunters can use technology to distinguish themselves from the pack. By using a Web-based video interviewing system, hiring managers can view video clips of job candidates, & share them with other decision makers. Employers can even compare the responses of candidates to the same question, further leveling the playing field. The candidate benefits as well because on camera, personality, enthusiasm & passion come through, making the case more convincingly than words on the page of a standard resume. Candidates need to become savvy about projecting themselves on camera. The Web is filled with advice on how to perform well in a video interview. Step 1 is to dress the same as you would for an in-person interview. Another tip is to look straight into the camera. Virtual resumes now resemble social networking profiles with photographs, active URL links & videos. Online portfolios consisting of images, video, text and audio come to life, showing what a candidate can offer the employer. "One of the most common requests we're getting these days from employers is for students to have their resumes & portfolios available online," says Debra Pierce, director of career services at Miami International University of Art & Design. No doubt, the Internet has enabled job seekers to promote themselves through web-based social networking sites like MySpace & Facebook. Employers are also using a quick Google search to see if there is any positive or negative content online about an applicant. For job seekers, outrageous or unprofessional pictures or videos on a social networking site can be a deal-breaker for a prospective employer. Therefore, job seekers need to understand the nature of these social networking sites and the repercussions they may have on their job search if not used appropriately. In this new environment, both sides of the jobhunting process benefit. In fact, the days of mailing a paper resume to an employer (which never yielded great results) may be over. Then again, a very creative resume kit that includes the high-tech elements (including a CD with a video & links to an online portfolio) delivered via snail mail, may be one way to stand apart from the rest of the pack.
