b) Describe the shape of the distribution. (Include modes, symmetry, and outliers or gaps.) The shape in the histogram is unimodal which means it has one mode, skewed to the left if you ignore the outlier, and has one outlier which is 75. This outlier is not an error, but probably an older audience who watches the show or a parent going with a younger child. c) Create a 5 Number Summary from the distribution. What is the IQR for this data? The mean height he found was 64 with a standard deviation of 4 inches. The data assumes the normal model. USE THIS FORMULA!!! (a) Ashley is 67 inches tall. She is taller than what proportion of girls? Draw a picture! N(64, 4) (67-64)/4 = 0.75 Look at the z-score table when z=0.75. You will get 0.7734. So she is 77.34% taller then girls between 16-18. (b) What proportion of girls are between 60 inches and 72 inches tall? Draw a picture! N(64,4) (60-64)/4 = -1 and (72-64)/4 = 2 So for z-score 1 you will 0.1587 get and for z-score 2 you will get 0.9817. Thus 0.9817 0.1587 is 0.8230. So 82.30% of girls are between 60 and 72 inches tall. (c) In order to be in the top 15% of girls heights between 16-18 years old, what is the minimum height you have to be? Draw a picture! In order to find the minimum height for the top 15% of girls we have to shade in and find the bottom 85% of girls or 0.8500. We know that the z-score is positive because positive z-scores include 50% of data. Looking at out z-score table we find the closest value to 0.8500 (0.8508) and correspond it to a z-score of 1.04. We then plug 1.04 for z in the formula to find x. 1.04 = (x-64)/4. Thus the minimum height that a girl has to be is 68.16 inches. 6) How does standardizing data into z-scores effect the shape, center, and spread of the distribution? It does not change the shape of the distribution of a variable, however, it does changes the center by making the mean 0 and changes the spread by making the standard deviation 1.
